Diageo Targets Wine And Beer Categories With New Product Rollouts
Diageo Chateau & Estate (DC&E) is rolling out a new California wine brand to the U.S. market this spring, Truvée Wines. Derived from the French word “to find,” Truvée is a Central Coast-sourced label created by sisters Robin and Andréa McBride, who grew up separately in Monterey, California and Marlborough, New Zealand respectively. The two sisters are seeking to combine the knowledge gained in the wine regions in which they were raised with the Truvée brand, which includes a lightly oaked Chardonnay and a Rhône-style red blend, both retailing at $16 a bottle.
DC&E is also hitting the market with the relaunched Chateau La Paws Wines, which supports animal rescue efforts through a partnership with North Shore Animal League America (NSALA). Twelve different rescued dogs are featured on the rotating labels for Chateau La Paws’ Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Red Wine Blend (all $12.99), which were crafted by veteran winemaker Marty Spate.
Meanwhile, Diageo is set to begin test marketing a new beer brand, Thump Keg Brewing Co., which crafts beers related to Diageo spirit labels like George Dickel and Peligroso Tequila. Testing in select markets like Nashville, Austin and New York City, Thump Keg is debuting with a Rye IPA (6.2% abv) and an Agave Amber Ale (5.8% abv). Both retail at $9.49 a six-pack of 12-ounce bottles and are also available in 20-liter kegs. Thump Keg Rye IPA uses the same underlying grains for its mash bill as those used for George Dickel Rye Whisky, while Agave Amber Ale, inspired by Peligroso, uses blue agave in its recipe.
The end of the three-tier system?
Three-tier as we know it will break down because it will be too expensive and too complicated to work the way it does now. Even the distributors, who have the most to lose, will want to change it to make it more consumer-friendly.

TITO’S LEGAL TROUBLES STILL GROWING
In addition to the lawsuit filed in California court and Florida federal court, Tito’s Handmade Vodka is now facing a lawsuit in Cook County, Illinois. This case, filed by plaintiffs Mario Aliano and Due Frattelli, uses very similar arguments to the previous two, namely alleging false marketing and capitalizing on the artisanal theme in order to charge more for the product, reports the Cook County Record (and brought to our attention by the Craft Beverage Association.)
“Defendant knows that Plaintiffs and other consumers and businesses believe they are paying costs associated with a high-quality, small-scale production process when they purchase Tito’s … Had they known that Defendant’s misrepresentations regarding Tito’s were false, they would have not purchased Tito’s,” the suit states. Furthermore, the plaintiffs claims Tito’s actions violate not just Illinois law, but Texas.
Like the other two cases, these plaintiffs will also be looking for class action certification for this case. Because these three cases all have similar complaints against Tito’s, Legal experts tell WSD the ball is in Tito’s court as to whether these three separate cases will be combined or they would prefer to try them all separately.

New Guinness Beer
Diageo Guinness USA will climb the pricing ladder with next month’s launch of a new beer called Guinness The 1759. Rolling out nationwide November 1, Guinness The 1759 was created to commemorate the year Arthur Guinness established the storied brand, signing a 9,000-year lease for the St. James’s Gate brewery in Dublin. The limited-edition brew is packaged in 750-ml. bottles, and it marks the first expression in the new Guinness Signature Series, which will debut a new commemorative beer each year. It also constitutes the first Guinness foray into the ultra-premium beer segment, according to Guinness brand director Doug Campbell.
“Guinness The 1759 is tapping into what we believe is a pretty interesting space—the emerging luxury beer category, which is geared toward sharing a bottle with a couple of people, special occasions and gifting for the holidays,” says Campbell, adding that The 1759 will have a suggested retail price of $34.99 a 750-ml.
The 1759 is an amber ale brewed with traditional beer malt as well as peated whisky malt typically used to produce Scotch and Irish whiskies, which Campbell says lends a “smoke character” to the beer. Just 90,000 bottles of the 9%-abv label were produced, with the vast majority reserved for the U.S. market.

Delicato Family Vineyards has extended its Gnarly Head brand with a new limited edition wine, Authentic Black. A Petite Sirah-based blend from Lodi, California, Gnarly Head Authentic Black is currently available in limited quantities, priced at $11.99 a 750-ml. The entry marks the third release in the brand’s Gnarly Head Authentic Collection series, which also features the Zinfandel-based Authentic Red and white blend Authentic White. Along with the Authentic Collection, Gnarly Head’s stable includes its Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay labels.

The 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck 95 miles offshore from the northern city of Iquique on Tuesday spared winemaking regions of Chile.
“The epicenter of the quake was nearly a 1,000 miles northwest of the capital city of Santiago and 700 miles from the northernmost vineyards in Elqui. ” said Marybeth Bentwood, Executive Director of Wines of Chile USA.
“At 8.2 it was an extraordinarily powerful event, but thankfully it occurred far enough away from the most populous parts of the country,” Bentwood said. “We have spoken to the wineries in Chile and have been reassured that there was very little impact on the vineyards, wineries and related industries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who were affected by the quake.”

Brown-Forman has formally announced the test launch of a new cinnamon-flavored Jack Daniel’s offering beginning in April. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire will be available in Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee for a suggested retail price of $22 a 750-ml. New Souverain Wine Line
Treasury Wine Estates has revamped California wine brand Souverain, aiming to reinvigorate a label historically known as a reliable, value-oriented Sonoma producer. The relaunch will include a new look intended to “breathe fresh life” into Souverain while staying true to its roots. Elements in the brand’s new label depict a crown, a cluster of grapes, the California golden bear and the thistle of Scotland, a tribute to winery founder Lee Stewart’s heritage.
Concurrently, Souverain will introduce a new range of North Coast wines—including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot—targeting the fast-growing $15 segment. Those wines will join the brand’s flagship Winemaker’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander Valley ($40) and Winemaker’s Reserve Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley ($35). According to Treasury, the intention is to build on Souverain’s legacy of producing high-quality North Coast Cabernet
New Sam Adams Beer
Boston Beer’s Samuel Adams brand has released Escape Route, a new limited edition spring seasonal. Billed as a Kölsch-style, 5%-abv brew, Escape Route is made with an “untraditional” yeast strain, which ferments at ale-like temperatures, but is then cold-conditioned like a lager, resulting in a blend of honey, floral, grapefruit and herbal hop notes. The hybrid entry is currently available nationwide, priced at $7.99-$9.99 a six-pack. Escape Route is also available as part of the Samuel Adams Spring Brews variety 12-pack, which retails for $14.99-$17.99.

New Patron Tequila
Patron has officially unveiled its upscale Gran Patron Piedra Tequila in the U.S. market. A limited production extra anejo Tequila, Piedra is made via the “Tahona” process in which steam-cooked agave is slowly crushed with a two-ton volcanic stone wheel called a Tahona. The resulting juice is then fermented and distilled along with the agave fiber. Piedra, retailing at $399 a hand-numbered 750-ml. bottle, was previously available only in travel retail.
New Busch Beer Soon
Anheuser-Busch is extending its Busch brand with its first new product in more than 15 years. The new entry, Busch Signature Copper Lager, is a higher-alcohol brew reminiscent of the recent Platinum and Black Crown extensions to A-B’s Bud Light and Budweiser brands respectively. Copper Lager is at 5.7% abv, compared with 4.3% for the core Busch brand. It’s rolling out across 12 Midwestern states for now—backed by print, TV and digital ads under the tagline “More Flavor. No Fuss”—with further expansion possible depending on performance.
