Anheuser-Busch pulls the brakes on beer for storm relief

New Yuengling
- G. Yuengling & Son will introduce a new seasonal beer, Yuengling India Pale Lager, in November. According to the Pottsville, Pennsylvania-based brewery—the largest craft brewer in the country, as per the Brewers Association—the IPL will be available in six-packs and on draft, and will be priced slightly above its flagship lager brand. The IPL will join Yuengling’s other seasonals, Summer Wheat Traditional Weizen, introduced last year, and Oktoberfest, launched in 2011, while the brewery’s Spring Seasonal Bock has been discontinued. Yuengling IPL features four hops varieties and contains 5% alcohol by volume and 60 IBUs. IPLs—an emerging beer style that is a variant of the surging India pale ale (IPA) format—capitalize on renewed interest in lagers and pilsners by craft brewers and craft beer drinkers. Other brewers marketing IPLs include Boston Beer Co. and Massachusetts-based Jack’s Abbey Brewing.

New Oak Aged Absolut
Looking to regain momentum behind Absolut vodka, Pernod Ricard plans to launch an oak-aged vodka under the brand this month, Reuters reports. Absolut Oak seeks to capitalize on the trend toward consumption of oak-aged brown spirits like whisk(e)y. The innovation play comes as Pernod Ricard USA has been trying to emphasize the higher-end Absolut Elyx offshoot in a bid to premiumize. Absolut, still the U.S. market’s top imported vodka brand, just ahead of Svedka, slipped 7% to 4.1 million cases last year, according to Impact Databank, and is down about half a million cases since 2012, amid tough competition from fast-rising Tito’s, among others. Meanwhile, Pernod says it’s increasing focus on Martell Cognac in the U.S., where the upscale brand currently has a relatively small presence.

Crown Royal Debuts First-Ever Rye Whisky
Diageo has added to Crown Royal’s portfolio with the nationwide release of Northern Harvest Rye, its first-ever blended rye whisky. “With rye whiskies serving as integral components of the Crown Royal Deluxe blend for more than 75 years, it was a natural and authentic extension to provide our loyal fans a rye offering,” said Yvonne Briese, vice president of marketing, Diageo North American Whiskey. The 90-proof offering’s suggested retail price is $29.99 a 750-ml. bottle.
Diageo is also expanding availability of its Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel whisky into new U.S. markets following an initial limited release in Texas. Featuring Crown Royal’s base Coffey Rye whisky, the 103-proof single barrel liquid is produced at the brand’s Coffey Rye still in Gimli, Manitoba. It marks the first national rollout of a barrel program by Crown Royal, allowing retailers to purchase an entire barrel, with every bottle ($54.99 a 750-ml.) produced from a barrel featuring a personalized medallion naming the retail location.
Grapefruit Emerging As Summer Beer Trend
Summer hasn’t even begun, but it’s beginning to look like grapefruit will be the big flavor trend for the beer category this season.
Several craft brewers have been producing beers featuring grapefruit flavors in recent years, but now at least two national players are behind new grapefruit-influenced brews. MillerCoors’ Leinenkugel Grapefruit Shandy, a summer seasonal, launched nationally in March, and the company says the response has been so positive that an enhanced order window for distributors has been added. The Coors Light Citrus Radler, due this summer, is also expected to have a grapefruit component. “The grapefruit beer market grew triple digits last year,” Ashley Selman, senior director of marketing at MillerCoors’ Tenth & Blake unit, reports. Earlier this year, Boston Beer Co.’s Alchemy & Science subsidiary launched Traveler’s Grapefruit Ale nationally.
Harpoon Brewing’s summer seasonal UFO Big Squeeze, meanwhile, is available in 24 states and Washington, D.C. “Beer drinkers have embraced UFO Big Squeeze more than we had anticipated,” says brand manager Chris Bonacci. Other brews containing grapefruit include Ballast Point’s Grapefruit Sculpin IPA, Abita Grapefruit Harvest IPA, Shiner’s Ruby Redbird and Schofferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen from Germany.

Diageo Targets Upscale Bourbon Tier With Blade And Bow Rollout
Diageo is officially launching its next play in the high-end Bourbon segment with the unveiling of its Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey brand, created at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. Inspired by the “five keys” symbol found throughout the distillery (and named for the two parts of a skeleton key), Blade and Bow is available in two offerings—Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (91 proof, $49.99) and 22-Year-Old Limited Release Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (92 proof, $149.99). The former is made from some of the oldest stocks to be distilled at Stitzel-Weller before it closed in 1992 and matured using the solera aging method. The 22-Year-Old Bourbon includes whiskies distilled in Louisville and Frankfort, Kentucky, and was most recently aged and bottled at Stitzel-Weller.
Blade and Bow follows Diageo’s launch of fellow upscale Bourbon labels Old Blowhard, Barterhouse and Rhetoric—all part of its Orphan Barrel Whiskey Project—last year.
New Sauvignon Blanc From Sonoma-Cutrer
Brown-Forman’s Sonoma-Cutrer has released its first-ever Sauvignon Blanc. Rolling out as the third entry in Sonoma-Cutrer’s Winemakers Release Series, the new offering is produced with Russian River Valley-sourced fruit and makes its debut with a 2014 vintage. The Sonoma-Cutrer Sauvignon Blanc is currently available in select U.S. markets, priced at around $24.99 a 750-ml. Previous entries in Sonoma-Cutrer’s limited production Winemakers Release Series include Late Harvest Chardonnay, as well as Founders Reserve Legacy, a premium Chardonnay offering.

Are Wine Drinkers More Responsible?
Based on statistics pulled from various, moderately reputable sources including the US Census Bureau, TTB (Tobacco Tax Bureau), NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism), and Gallup, and it appears that, on average, wine drinkers drink less than beer drinkers.
Sugar in Wine, The Great Misunderstanding
Sweetness is a perception. Bitterness, like the caffeine in colas, or tannins in wine, will reduce the perception of sugar. So does acidity. Hence the delightful phosphoric acid in your Coke, and the importance of natural acidity in wine.

David Vs. Goliath??
Our “small” family owned liquor store (Vintage 1978) is located close to TWO other liquor retailers. One is Shaw’s supermarket (beer/Wine) the other a “small” family owned business Devita’s Market (Full liquor)
We knew there was a Beer/Wine license available for a while in town. Last March another “small Business” tried to get it
and the Franklin Town council denied it as there was another “small business” across the street from it AND “no public need”.
http://www.franklinmatters.org/2014/03/live-reporting-town-council-mar-5-2014.html
(“motion for denial on basis for no public need on basis of over saturation in current area”)
Tuesday while checking out a customer she stated Big Y (located across from us) was getting a license. Reaching out to our contact at Big Y it was confirmed.
Today we started to prepare to oppose that based on last year’s council decision. ONLY to find out the meeting is next week Wednesday May 6th 7:10pm.
It was shocking we did not get a notice of the meeting for approval as we are directly across from them.
At the town hall we were told only people notified are within 300ft. As a note I did find online the legal notice posted in the Milford News.
I contacted Shaw’s corporate and Devita’s they also were not aware.
Please understand we realize there is a convenience factor for supermarkets. Our goal is that the Town council votes as they did last year on “need” and location of THREE businesses in area.(over saturation )
Keeping in mind last year’s denial was a small “store” within the same distance of ONE “small” store.
The Big Y is in the same location as TWO “small” stores and ONE “large” store.
There are many movements/groups in Town to support “small business”.
Please keep this Town Council meeting/decision and us in mind we would love your support.
Reach out to the Franklin Town council members: http://town.franklin.ma.us/Pages/FranklinMA_Council/index
Or share this on social media.
Thank You

Targeted at Millennial consumers, the 40-proof liqueur “shimmers” when shaken for an eye-catching effect, Gallo says. Now available nationally, Viniq retails at around $20 a 750-ml. bottle.

Diageo Targets Wine And Beer Categories With New Product Rollouts
Diageo Chateau & Estate (DC&E) is rolling out a new California wine brand to the U.S. market this spring, Truvée Wines. Derived from the French word “to find,” Truvée is a Central Coast-sourced label created by sisters Robin and Andréa McBride, who grew up separately in Monterey, California and Marlborough, New Zealand respectively. The two sisters are seeking to combine the knowledge gained in the wine regions in which they were raised with the Truvée brand, which includes a lightly oaked Chardonnay and a Rhône-style red blend, both retailing at $16 a bottle.
DC&E is also hitting the market with the relaunched Chateau La Paws Wines, which supports animal rescue efforts through a partnership with North Shore Animal League America (NSALA). Twelve different rescued dogs are featured on the rotating labels for Chateau La Paws’ Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Red Wine Blend (all $12.99), which were crafted by veteran winemaker Marty Spate.
Meanwhile, Diageo is set to begin test marketing a new beer brand, Thump Keg Brewing Co., which crafts beers related to Diageo spirit labels like George Dickel and Peligroso Tequila. Testing in select markets like Nashville, Austin and New York City, Thump Keg is debuting with a Rye IPA (6.2% abv) and an Agave Amber Ale (5.8% abv). Both retail at $9.49 a six-pack of 12-ounce bottles and are also available in 20-liter kegs. Thump Keg Rye IPA uses the same underlying grains for its mash bill as those used for George Dickel Rye Whisky, while Agave Amber Ale, inspired by Peligroso, uses blue agave in its recipe.
The end of the three-tier system?
Three-tier as we know it will break down because it will be too expensive and too complicated to work the way it does now. Even the distributors, who have the most to lose, will want to change it to make it more consumer-friendly.

A-B Launches Beer Home Delivery App
Anheuser-Busch InBev is introducing a new beer delivery app, the Bud Light Button, that will allow consumers to have the leading U.S. beer brand delivered to their door. ABI partnered with digital innovation agency of record AKQA and “platform provider” Klink to create the service, which will begin today with an initial launch in the Washington, D.C. market. Consumers can order between one and 100 cases of beer and have it delivered by Klink—via an independent retailer—within an hour, ABI says.
Currently available for the Android platform, the Bud Light Button will follow with an iPhone version coming soon. The service will dovetail with Bud Light’s existing “Up for whatever” positioning by offering additions like Bud Light branded gear and “Up for whatever experiences” on certain deliveries. “Once in a while, we’re going to deliver a really over-the-top experience,” said Lucas Herscovici, Anheuser-Busch vice president of consumer connections. “Maybe that means we show up with a DJ who turns your gathering of friends into an amazing event.”

Jim Beam Extends With New Bonded Bourbon
Beam Suntory is set to debut a new bonded Bourbon under its flagship Jim Beam brand next month. Hitting select accounts nationwide, Jim Beam Bonded ($23 a 750-ml.) is a 100-proof Bourbon aged four years and produced in a single distillery season at a single distillery in line with the “Bottled in Bond Act” of 1897. Said to feature spicy oak notes with a background of vanilla and caramel, the newcomer is geared toward classic cocktail serves.
Jim Beam marketed a bonded Bourbon years ago, but this is a completely new product, the company tells SND. Including Devil’s Cut, Red Stag and its other flavored whiskies, Jim Beam rose an estimated 4.7% to 4.1 million cases in the U.S. market in 2014, according to Impact Databank.

New year brings new wage, tax, public safety laws to Rhode Island
Starting Thursday, Rhode Island judges — as well as magistrates — will have the power to prohibit drivers convicted of driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, or refusing a chemical test, from driving a vehicle without an ignition interlock system.
An ignition interlock system is a device wired to a vehicle’s ignition that requires a driver to breathe into the device — just as one would with a Breathalyzer — prior to starting the vehicle. According to backers of this approach, the system prevents a motorist from being able to start his or her car if it detects alcohol on the breath of the driver.
According to a General Assembly data sheet: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found states that passed interlock laws saw an average two-thirds reduction in repeat DUI offenses. Rhode Island has joined at least 20 other states across the country that have put similar measures in place.

Jackson Family Buys South African Vineyard
Jackson Family Wines, which owns more than 20,000 acres of vineyards in California and around the world, is expanding to a new wine region: South Africa. Wine Spectator has learned the company is buying Fijnbosch farm, which includes 20 acres of vines in the Banghoek Valley, a ward in the prominent Stellenbosch region, according to a spokesperson for the firm.
Jackson Family is planning to release 1,000 cases of a Chardonnay called Capensis made from the farm’s 2013 vintage, co-produced with vintner Antony Beck, a local whose family owns Graham Beck Wines. The purchase price for the farm, which totals 121 acres of land overall, was not disclosed. The deal continues a wave of expansion for the company, which has recently added vineyards in Oregon and California.
The Engelage family is selling the property, located near Bartinney and Thelema Mountain Vineyards, two top producers. Until now, they have sold the grapes to other wineries, including Jackson Family. South African wines have improved markedly and steadily in the past decade, though annual exports to the U.S. have plateaued at around 1 million cases

Sugarlands Shine American Peach ($25 a 750-ml. jar) will roll out in mid-January 2015 at retail in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Minnesota and Florida. American Peach marks the distillery’s first 70-proof moonshine and joins other products including Silver Cloud Tennessee Sour Mash, Jim Tom Hedrick’s Unaged Rye, Appalachian Apple Pie, Blockader’s Blackberry, Butterscotch Gold, Old Fashioned Lemonade and Southern Sweet Tea.
New Harpoon Beer
Boston-based Harpoon Brewery has released Tuscan Pool Party—a new wine grape-infused beer—as part of its limited edition 100 Barrel Series. Created as part of a collaboration between Harpoon’s Charlie Cummings and Italian brewer Moreno Ercolani, Tuscan Pool Party is brewed with a Sangiovese and Merlot grape juice blend and Amarillo dry hops, then aged on oak spirals. The 7.6%-abv offering is currently offered in 22-ounce bottles, as well as on limited draft. Tuscan Pool Party is the 52nd installment in Harpoon’s 100 Barrel Series, which offers individual Harpoon brewers the opportunity to formulate a new recipe and brew a one-off beer.
