IS ALL NATURAL WINE ORGANIC?
The short answer to your question is no, but let me explain. Natural wine as a term is not regulated, and several definitions exist. According to Raw Wine, the premier festival devoted to wine we might call natural, “no legal definitions of natural wine currently exist, but various official-ish ones do, set by groups of growers in various countries, including France, Italy and Spain.” These official-ish definitions state that growers should practice organic or biodynamic farming, but, due to geographic diversity and other factors, a winery is not required to be certified organic in order to produce what it calls natural wine. Because of this, one cannot guarantee that every bottle of natural wine is indeed organic.
The moral of the story is that if your goal is to drink organic wine, either make sure the wine is certified as such, or do your research. Many producers say the reason they can’t officially label their wines “organic” is because certification is so expensive. That means it’s on you to make sure you’re buying wine and supporting farmers you believe in.

New DOCG
DOCG #75 is in for 🇮🇹 now we can sleep in tightly…🙄 Wine Scholar Guild news #boston #italianwine #winelover 🍷
“At the beginning of July the DOC Tullum/Terre Tollesi in Abruzzo was elevated to DOCG. The DOC was originally created in 2008.
Although this area has long-standing winemaking tradition, this DOC is rather obscure and considerably small. The area under vine accounts for less than 25 ha (60 ac). There are currently only two producers using the Tullum DOC designation and the total production accounts for about less than 100,000 bottles. According to the consorzio, the DOCG will soon attract more producers to invest in this area.
The DOC allowed for a wide range of grapes and styles. Following the introduction of the DOCG however, the grapes and wine styles allowed have been restricted to Montepulciano (labeled as Rosso) and varietal Pecorino and Passerina. A spumante (Chardonnay based) is still allowed under the DOCG.”

The latter is a St. Helena, Napa Valley-sourced wine that will be released as part of the brand’s Collector Series. Latitude’s third new California wine is a Rutherford, Napa Valley-sourced Cabernet Sauvignon for the Magic Door brand ($27).

Sparkling Blue Nun
Once a million-case brand in the U.S., Germany’s Blue Nun now sells about 180,000 cases stateside, according to Impact Databank, imported by Shaw-Ross International. While the brand has faced challenges over the years as younger consumers have been slow to embrace the Riesling category, Blue Nun has seen improved momentum lately, boosted by its 24K Gold Sparkling extension. Retailing at $15 a 750-ml., the sparkling offering contains real 24K gold flakes and is present in 38 states.
“The launch of 24K has helped introduce the Blue Nun brand to many first-time consumers,” says Mark Tramont, who oversees the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean for Blue Nun parent F.W. Langguth Erben. Tramont adds that the sparkling extension skews toward female drinkers and has had particular success with multicultural consumers in markets like Texas, Georgia, California, New Jersey, Florida, and Illinois—most of which are not traditional strongholds for Blue Nun overall.
Regarding the outlook for German wine (a 2-million-case category in the U.S.) and for Riesling in particular, Tramont says consumer education is the key. “Our challenge is that many people overlook the category without exploring it. But there’s no other grape as versatile as Riesling, which can go from sparkling to still and bone-dry to sweet,” he notes. Blue Nun Riesling has a “substantially drier” profile than most of its competitors, he adds, which the company sees as a positive differentiator in the current market.

Hard Seltzers Make Their Mark On Impact’s “Hot Brands” List
While the U.S. market’s major brewers have faced their share of challenges lately—among them the decline of mainstream beers and ongoing market share losses to wine and spirits—they’re seeing rapid growth from a relatively new category: hard seltzers. A number of hard seltzer brands are making inroads with consumers—especially those mindful of their intake of calories, sugar, and carbohydrates—led by five labels that were recently named as Impact “Hot Brands.”
Boston Beer Co. has been among the leaders in the hard seltzer category with its Truly Spiked & Sparkling brand. Launched in 2016, Truly Spiked & Sparkling reached nearly 6 million (2.25-gallon) cases in the U.S. last year, across a portfolio that includes 13 flavors of 5% abv sparklers. Dave Burwick, president and CEO of Boston Beer, recently said, “Truly continues to grow beyond our expectations. We’re expanding distribution across all channels and improving our position as a leader in hard seltzer as more competitors enter the category.”
White Claw, from Mark Anthony Brands, is right on Truly’s heels at 5.8 million cases, up from 1.7 million cases in 2017. White Claw includes Black Cherry, Ruby Grapefruit, Raspberry, and Mango flavors, and recently added a limited edition “Pure” Hard Seltzer (5% abv/100 calories a serving) that’s billed as a take on the vodka soda. Twelve-packs of the new entry retail at around $16.
In addition to the top two seltzer brands, entries from A-B (Bon & Viv) and MillerCoors (Henry’s Hard sparkling water) were recognized as Hot Brands. Chelsea Phillips, vice president of Beyond Beer Brands at A-B, attributes Bon & Viv’s performance last year to its “Follow Your Siren” ad campaign and the steady introduction of new flavors.
Diageo Beer Co. USA is also seeing gains in the category with its Smirnoff Spiked sparkling seltzer range. According to Krista Kiisk, brand director for flavored malt beverages at Diageo, Smirnoff Spiked is benefiting from rising consumer demand for products with no sugar. “The fact that Smirnoff Spiked has zero sugar is a point of difference from other options in the category,” Kiisk says.
Impact has a full report on the Hot Brand award winners for the beer, cider, RTD, and hard seltzer categories in its July 1 issue.
