Magic Hat
South Burlington, Vermont’s Magic Hat Brewing Company is releasing a limited edition holiday raspberry stout, Feast of Fools. Previously only available at the brewery, this year 6,000 22-ounce bottles of the brew will be sold at select retailers nationwide. The 6%-abv stout features a sweet nose supported by cocoa and dark chocolate from the malts, the company says. Magic Hat will donate $5,000 from Feast of Fools’ sales to the Vermont Food Bank. The packaging on this year’s release features a Giant Sequoia drawn by James Stitt and created to support the state’s parks foundation. Next Game Of Thrones Beer Revealed
Cooperstown, New York-based Brewery Ommegang has revealed the fifth beer in its series inspired by the HBO series Game of Thrones. Three-Eyed Raven Dark Saison Ale is a 7.5%-abv brew made with malted rye, midnight wheat and dark candi sugar, as well as Hallertau Spalt Select, Tettnang and Bravo hops. It will be available on draft in sixth-barrel kegs and in corked 25.4-ounce bottles ($9.50) beginning next spring, concurrent with the start of Game of Thrones’ fifth season. Previous offerings in the line have included current release Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale, Fire and Blood Red Ale, Take the Black Stout and Iron Throne Blonde Ale. The first three beers all sold out, and Valar Morghulis is expected to do the same, despite a quadrupling of production compared with the first offering, Iron Throne.

Wine Spectator: Who Buys Wine Online?
Online wine sales have been increasing in the United States at double-digit rates for the past five years. But that doesn’t mean they’re a major part of the industry yet. More than 80% of wine is sold in grocery stores, wine shops and other brick-and-mortar outlets, according to Nielsen. “Wine remains under-penetrated online at less than 2% of all U.S. wines sales,” said Michael Osborne, founder and vice president for merchandising at Wine.com. A new study by researchers at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo sheds some light on the small but growing community of online wine consumers.
Based on a survey of consumers, researchers discovered that online wine buyers are more likely to be male, over the age of 40, married with children and have a higher household income. They also tend to be wine connoisseurs or enthusiasts and spend more on wine than non-online buyers. (An e-mail survey was sent to 3,000 wine purchasers with a 31% response rate; 23% of respondents had purchased wine online.)
When these consumers buy wine online they are generally seeking higher quality wines from recognized appellations and have a preference for family-owned or small wineries. They are also quite tech savvy and are more likely to use phone apps or tablets to research wine information. But these online wine consumers do not use Facebook, Twitter or blogs any more than non-online wine consumers. Surprisingly, Millennial consumers of legal drinking age currently purchase very little wine online, even though they grew up with the Internet. The researchers discovered the main reasons were that Millennials think shipping costs are too high and would prefer not to wait for a wine shipment.
Though online wine sales currently constitute a small percentage of industry volume, most experts agree that the channel will continue to grow, especially with Amazon entering the arena in 2012 and large wine retailers such as Total Wine and BevMo expanding their web presence. Wine Spectator has more on the Cal-Poly study and the outlook for online wine sales in the U.S. market.

Anchor Christmas Spirit
San Francisco’s Anchor Distilling Co. has partnered with sister company Anchor Brewing to release Christmas Spirit, a new holiday entry. Featuring winter spice notes, Christmas Spirit is distilled using Anchor Brewing’s Christmas Ale, an annual beer release typically available from November through mid-January. The 45%-abv clear spirit will be sold throughout the holiday season, priced at $49.99 a 750-ml. Christmas Spirit marks the latest “beer-meets-spirit” collaboration from Anchor Distilling and Anchor Brewing, following their December 2012 launch of Hophead vodka ($29.95), made with hops from Washington state’s Yakima Valley.

TITO’S LEGAL TROUBLES STILL GROWING
In addition to the lawsuit filed in California court and Florida federal court, Tito’s Handmade Vodka is now facing a lawsuit in Cook County, Illinois. This case, filed by plaintiffs Mario Aliano and Due Frattelli, uses very similar arguments to the previous two, namely alleging false marketing and capitalizing on the artisanal theme in order to charge more for the product, reports the Cook County Record (and brought to our attention by the Craft Beverage Association.)
“Defendant knows that Plaintiffs and other consumers and businesses believe they are paying costs associated with a high-quality, small-scale production process when they purchase Tito’s … Had they known that Defendant’s misrepresentations regarding Tito’s were false, they would have not purchased Tito’s,” the suit states. Furthermore, the plaintiffs claims Tito’s actions violate not just Illinois law, but Texas.
Like the other two cases, these plaintiffs will also be looking for class action certification for this case. Because these three cases all have similar complaints against Tito’s, Legal experts tell WSD the ball is in Tito’s court as to whether these three separate cases will be combined or they would prefer to try them all separately.

Diageo Guinness USA will climb the pricing ladder with next month’s launch of a new beer called Guinness The 1759. Rolling out nationwide November 1, Guinness The 1759 was created to commemorate the year Arthur Guinness established the storied brand, signing a 9,000-year lease for the St. James’s Gate brewery in Dublin. The limited-edition brew is packaged in 750-ml. bottles, and it marks the first expression in the new Guinness Signature Series, which will debut a new commemorative beer each year. It also constitutes the first Guinness foray into the ultra-premium beer segment, according to Guinness brand director Doug Campbell.
“Guinness The 1759 is tapping into what we believe is a pretty interesting space—the emerging luxury beer category, which is geared toward sharing a bottle with a couple of people, special occasions and gifting for the holidays,” says Campbell, adding that The 1759 will have a suggested retail price of $34.99 a 750-ml.

Just 90,000 bottles of the 9%-abv label were produced, with the vast majority reserved for the U.S. market.

Consumers need to be re-educated about the significance of age statements associated with rum and understand the importance of maturation better, a distiller has stated.
Italian Wines’ U.S. Value Rising In 2014, Despite Volume Decline
Italian wine exports to the U.S. rose 5.5% by value, even as volumes dipped 0.9%, in the first eight months of 2014, according to data from the Italian Food & Wine Institute. The U.S. market’s largest imported wine region, Italy exported a total of 1,683,770 hectoliters (18.7 million cases) to the U.S. from January through August, compared to 1,698,320 hectoliters (18.9 million cases) over the same period last year. Value, meanwhile, jumped from $869.7 million to $917.7 million.
Sparkling wine, in particular, helped drive much of Italy’s progress in the U.S., where Italian offerings account for more than 50% of the market’s total sparkling wine category. The Italian sparkling wine segment grew 17.3% by volume to nearly 2.8 million cases, and 21.3% by value to $120.8 million, during the eight-month period.
New Boston Rum
Boston-based Bully Boy Distillers is launching a bottled rum punch called the Hub Punch, an homage to an original recipe dating back to the late 1800s in Boston. To create Hub Punch, Bully Boy steeps its own Boston Rum with orange and lemon peel and raspberry, and then infuses the liquid with botanicals and herbs. It’s bottled at 35% abv and is best served on the rocks, neat or mixed with soda water, ginger ale or lemonade. The suggested retail price is $29 a 750-ml. and the release date is October 22. Bully Boy will be made in limited-run batches on the company’s 750-gallon copper pot still, with distribution limited to Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

New Shipyard Winter Beer

New Sam Adams Beer
Boston Beer’s Samuel Adams is debuting Kosmic Mother Funk Grand Cru, a Belgian ale aged in Hungarian oak tuns for more than a year. Through November, the craft offering will be available on draft in select U.S. cities. Kosmic Mother Funk Grand Cru is brewed with wild yeast and bacteria including Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus for a spicy, fruity flavor with hints of oak and vanilla, according to the company. The ale was also blended into the Samuel Adams Barrel Room Collection series of Belgian brews. Kosmic Mother Funk Grand Cru will be available on tap in a “tasting tour” that will hit select locations in Boston, New York, Denver, Cleveland, Dallas, Philadelphia, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle and another city to be voted on by craft beer lovers across the country.

New Ste Michelle Cabernet
Ste. Michelle Wine Estates’ Columbia Crest brand is crafting its latest Cabernet Sauvignon using a new crowdsourcing method. With the help of an interactive website, the Paterson, Washington state-based winery will ask consumers to weigh in on the 18-month winemaking process, allowing them to decide how to tend, irrigate and harvest the grapes. Additionally, Columbia Crest head winemaker Juan Munoz Oca will help guide the online community and answer questions. Around 1,000 cases of the final Crowdsourced Cabernet 2014 will be available, retailing across the U.S., online and at the Columbia Crest tasting room. For the six months through June, Columbia Crest shipments fell 16%, to 378,000 cases, according to Ste. Michelle.

The range makes its debut with Devil’s Collection White 2012, which features Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer from the Casablanca Valley, and Devil’s Collection Red 2012, made with Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from the Rapel Valley. Both offerings are priced at $15 a 750-ml. Casillero del Diablo—which is handled in the U.S. by Excelsior Wines, the joint marketing venture between Concha y Toro and Banfi Vintners—was up 4% to nearly 400,000 cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.
New Paul Hobbs Wine
Winemaker Paul Hobbs has partnered with French vintner Bertrand Vigouroux to launch a new Malbec from the Cahors region of southwest France. Named for the crocus flower, the pair’s Crocus Malbec de Cahors is made with a single Malbec clone sourced from three Vigouroux family properties in Cahors, which is Malbec’s historic home. Around 1,250 cases of Crocus Malbec de Cahors’ inaugural 2011 vintage are currently available in the U.S., retailing for around $45 a bottle. Paul Hobbs Imports (PHI) serves as Crocus’ exclusive importer.

Updates On MA Wine Direct Shipment
Massachusetts has approved direct-shipping for both in- and out-of-state wineries along with its 2015 budget, which was signed Friday by governor Deval Patrick. As of January 1, 2015, wineries may apply for a direct shipping permit that costs an initial $300 and can be renewed annually for $150. Licensed wineries will then be able to ship 12 nine-liter cases per purchaser per calendar year. Massachusetts has been one of the most important wine-consuming markets to remain a holdout on direct shipping. In terms of per-capita consumption, it ranks third after Washington, D.C. and New Hampshire, at nearly 6 gallons annually, according to Impact Databank. Advocacy group American Wine Consumer Coalition has pointed out that the new law still leaves significant restrictions on direct-shipping, including the barring of foreign-produced wines and shipments directly from retailers.

Highland Park unveils its Dark Origins
Highland Park has added a new expression called Dark Origins to its core range of single malt Scotch whiskies.
Dark Origins, a 46%abv non-chill filtered single malt, will start to appear on shelves in July and roll out internationally throughout autumn 2014.
It uses twice as many first fill sherry casks than in the classic Highland Park 12 year old resulting in a naturally darker, richer flavour with sherried spice, a chocolate twist and signature sweet smoke of the Orcadian whisky. Highland Park is one of the few distilleries not using distiller’s caramel and so Dark Origins takes its natural colour from the interaction between spirit and cask.

Providence, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beer has debuted Town Beach Imperial IPA, the fifth installment in its Private Stock series of 22-ounce limited edition offerings. The summer brew features pale and German Pilsner malts with Nugget, Chinook, Northern Brewer and Hallertau hops as a nod to the six German-American founders of the brewery in 1890. The 8.1%-abv IPA carries a label that’s reminiscent of the early 20th century packaging on Narragansett beers. The Private Stock series launched in December 2012 and has included Imperial Russian Stout, Imperial Black Steam, Imperial IPA and Imperial Bohemian Pilsner. Town Beach Imperial IPA retails for $5.99 a 22-ounce bottle and is available throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Samuel Adams has re-released its limited edition Latitude 48 IPA Deconstructed 12-pack. New Jacks Abby Beer
Framingham, Massachusetts-based Jack’s Abby Brewing, LLC is celebrating its third anniversary in business with the release of Framingham Lager. Framingham Lager is an American-style lager brewed wholly from 2-row malts and real hops. It will be available in 12-packs throughout Massachusetts and on draft only in its hometown. The family-owned craft brewery will donate a portion of the beer’s proceeds to the Downtown Framingham Renaissance in an effort to revitalize the city’s downtown. The brewery says it increased production capacity last year from 7,000 barrels to 18,000 barrels.

Prosecco Is Up
Shipments of Prosecco DOC wines to the U.S. were up 24% to approximately 25 million bottles (2.1m cases) last year, according to the Prosecco DOC Consortium. The U.S. represents 16% of Prosecco DOC shipments worldwide, which rose 18% to 155 million bottles last year. After Prosecco’s reclassification beginning with the 2009 harvest, the Prosecco DOC now includes many growing areas whose wines formerly bore the IGT label.

Providence, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beer is re-releasing Narragansett 1975 “Jaws” retro packaging for the summer months in 12-, 18- and 30-packs of 12-ounce cans. The re-release marks the 29th anniversary of the release of the popular film, in which actor Robert Shaw crushed a can of Narragansett. The brewery has partnered with the R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to support shark conservation efforts in the Atlantic Ocean through sales of the beer. The limited edition cans will be available throughout New England and markets such as New York, Philadelphia, North Carolina, Washington D.C. and Florida.

New Black Box
Constellation is extending its Black Box wine brand with a new California Pinot Noir offering. Retailing at $24.99 a 3-liter box, the new entry joins 10 other varietals offered by Black Box in 3-liter format (the brand also includes five varietal wines in 500-ml. Tetra Paks).
Constellation says the addition of Pinot Noir to Black Box should help the brand cross 4 million nine-liter cases this year. An Impact “Hot Brand,” Black Box rose 27% to 3.4 million cases last year, and has nearly doubled since 2010. Top competing brand Bota Box, part of DFV Wines’ portfolio, also recently added a Pinot Noir to its stable.

Anheuser-Busch InBev has launched new red, white and blue packaging on Budweiser cans and bottles as part of an initiative aimed at helping military families. Using codes on the packaging, consumers can donate $1 to military families. The company expects the codes and contributions from wholesalers to account for up to $3 million in donations, which will provide more than 600 scholarships to families of soldiers killed or disabled in action. Budweiser partnered with the foundation in 2010 and with its wholesalers has raised almost $10 million to date.

Josh Cellars brand, and is eyeing other opportunities across the burgeoning red blend category. Josh Cellars’ new offering, Legacy, is a blend of Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah that retails at around $15. It joins a brand portfolio that includes Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varietals ranging from $14-$17 a bottle.

MA Bottle Bill Expansion
Proposed Changes:
H3848, a bill to expand the bottle bill. Here is a brief outline of the bill:
Waters, teas, juices and energy drinks would now have a 5 cent deposit.
The Executive Office of Environmental Affairs will review the refund value every 5 years, and would have the authority to adjust the 5 cent deposit up or down based upon the current economic situation.
The handling fee to dealers (stores and/or redemption centers) would increase from 2.25 cents per unit to 3.5 cents per unit.
A separate fund called the “Clean Environment Fund” would be created to segregate the money collected from the bottle bill and to be used for environmental purposes.
The Executive Office of Energy and the Environment will create regulations that will give small businesses the right to seek exemption from accepting “empties” provided no other law is enacted to prohibit this. Small businesses are defined as businesses with less than 3,000 feet of retail space and those business models in which three or fewer establishments are controlled by one owner.
If expansion is enacted it will take effect on April 22, 2015.

Sheffield, Massachusetts-based Berkshire Mountain Distillers has partnered with 10 U.S. craft brewers to create a new range of Bourbons finished in beer barrels for a minimum of three months. Several offerings in the limited edition range began rolling out in January, including collaborations with Georgia’s Terrapin Brewing, Pennsylvania’s Tröegs Brewing and Massachusetts’ Samuel Adams. In the coming months, Berkshire will unveil new entries created in partnership with Michigan’s Founders Brewing, Florida’s Cigar City Brewing, Montana’s Big Sky Brewing, Washington’s Hale’s Ales, Oregon’s Full Sail Brewing, New York’s Brewery Ommegang and New Hampshire’s Smuttynose Brewing. The Bourbons, which range in price from $42.99-$60 a bottle, feature the name of the participating brewery and are available only in each brewer’s region.

New US Wine Export Stats
U.S. wine exports, of which around 90% come from California, reached a new record in 2013, rising 16% to $1.55 billion on a volume increase of 7.5% to 435 million liters, according to the Wine Institute. Among wine export regions, California shipments to the European Union rose 31% to $617 million, Canada was up 12% to $454 million, Japan fell 7% to $102 million, Hong Kong slipped 12% to $78 million, China increased 6% to $77 million and Mexico jumped 21% to $22 million. Wine Institute president and CEO Robert Koch said California, which now exports a fifth of its wine production, is on track to reach its goal of $2 billion in exports by 2020.
New Italian Chianti Category
Tuscany’s Chianti Classico DOCG has introduced Gran Selezione, a new top-tier wine category. Unveiled in Florence last week, the Gran Selezione classification dictates that a wine must be sourced from a winery’s own vineyards, adhere to strict production regulations and can only be sold following a 30-month maturation and period of bottle refinement. Gran Selezione wines are estimated to account for around 10% of Chianti Classico production and are collectively valued at between €70-€100 million ($95-$136 million). Previously, the Chianti Classico denomination featured just two quality classifications, including the Annata (year’s vintage) and Riserva categories.

Craft Brewing and Distilling News: Anderson Valley Brewing Company from Boonville, California is releasing the latest offering in its Wild Turkey Barrel Series, Huge Arker Imperial Stout. The brewery partnered with the iconic Lawrenceburg, Kentucky Bourbon distillery for the barrel-aged craft beer series and will release Huge Arker in limited quantities on draft and in 22-ounce bottles beginning in early February to select U.S. markets. The imperial stout is 13.5% abv and is aged in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels for several months for a rich flavor of honey and molasses. Huge Arker follows the release of the highly popular Anderson Valley Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Stout. California’s Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is launching its 2014 Harvest Series nationwide next week, showcasing newly developed hop varieties and diverse hopping methods with five 24-ounce format IPA releases to debut over the course of the year. A single-hop IPA featuring unnamed Hop #291 will kick off the series. Upcoming beers in the lineup will include another single-hop IPA, as well as fresh-hop, wet-hop and wild-hop IPAs. The brewery is also planning its second annual Single, Fresh, West & Wild Harvest Festival this fall in its hometown, featuring brewers from across the country showcasing their offerings that include at least one single-hop, fresh-hop, wet-hop or wild-hop beer.
