Josh Cellars Founder Joseph Carr, Deutsch Family Launch Upscale Force & Grace Brand
After building Josh Cellars into a 5.4-million-case juggernaut atop the U.S. wine market, Joseph Carr and Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits are taking aim at the high end with a new brand called Force & Grace. Carr joined forces with winemaker Jean Hoefliger to create the brand, which is debuting nationally at select retailers, highlighting a range of different California appellations.
The initial offering from Force & Grace includes a Carneros Chardonnay ($33), Paso Robles Cabernet ($35), Napa Valley Cabernet ($55), Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon ($90), Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon ($100), and Revelist Cabernet Sauvignon ($125). At the top of the ladder, Revelist is a luxury cuvee sourced mainly from the Oakville and Rutherford appellations.
“The wines are available in limited quantities, and we will gradually grow the availability from vintage to vintage,” Tom Steffanci, president of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, told SND. “Thanks to Jean’s careful selection of outstanding vineyards and his expertise in crafting the wines, we can showcase the delicate balance between Force and Grace from California’s finest appellations.” The brand’s name refers to Carr’s background. Before embarking on his wine career, he was a high school wrestling champion, and later studied modern dance in college.

Matthew McConaughey Enters Super-Premium Tequila, Launching Pantalones Brand
Actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila have launched Pantalones Organic Tequila, a new venture co-founded with spirits entrepreneur Andrew Chrisomalis. Pantalones is made from 100% blue agave and is certified organic by the USDA. “The north star of the brand is to bring fun back to Tequila,” Chrisomalis, co-founder and executive chairman of Pantalones, told SND, adding that the expectation is to sell in the tens of thousands of cases the first year, with the ability to scale up quickly from there. Chrisomalis previously led Davos Brands (known for Aviation Gin) before it was acquired by Diageo for $610 million in 2020.
The super-premium Pantalones is launching with Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo Tequilas priced at $40, $45, and $50, respectively, produced at a certified organic distillery in Amatitán, Jalisco. All three releases are bottled at 40% abv. Pantalones Reposado is aged for nine months and the Añejo for 15. Initially, the brand will be available in five markets—Texas, California, Florida, Arizona, and Nevada—with a national rollout planned for 2024.
The McConaugheys are owners and investors in the business, Chrisomalis noted, and “have been integral in virtually every aspect of the brand and the business in terms of the name Pantalones and in terms of the liquid,” he said. “We see it as upscale but at the same time a casual and relaxed brand.”

Spirit Of Gallo Rolls Out New Tequila Cocktail Brand VMC
Spirit of Gallo has launched VMC, a new Tequila-based RTD created in collaboration with boxer Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Casa Lumbre. The new line comes in three flavors—Paloma, Margarita, and Jamaica (hibiscus)—all at 5.5% and made with Blanco Tequila, sparkling water, and natural flavors.
The brand will roll out in September in 4-packs of 355-ml. cans and in individual resealable 700-ml. cans, priced at $11 and $5, respectively. The launch will initially focus on markets with large Mexican-American populations, according to the company.
“VMC was created and first launched in Mexico led by our partners at Casa Lumbre, and it was a huge success among Canelo’s fans,” said Britt West, senior vice president and general manager of Spirit of Gallo. “We are confident that VMC will capture the hearts and palates of Mexican and Mexican-American consumers in the United States. Consumers are looking for canned cocktails and full-flavor styles, but until now there hasn’t been an authentic Mexican offering in this category. VMC is here to change that.”
