These infractions, he adds, can “include on-premise and off-premise retailers. The preferred shelf space at an off-premise retailer may be the space near the check-out counter or the eye-level on the aisle shelves …. For an on-premise retailer, it could be the draft beer taphead, the well product or, again, some shelf or display space that traditionally captures the eye of the consumer who may then order that brand.”

One wine writer asks wine lovers to reflect on their standards
Let’s assume that you are dedicated to drinking wine. It’s your go-to, your default, your everlasting love. Wine is part of your life, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
With that assumption in mind, let’s consider a handful of questions to find out not how much you love drinking wine, but how “good” you are at it. And if simple concepts like “good” and “bad” are too aggressive, replace “How good are you?” with “How much do you care?”

The Pagan Origins of Toasting (Really?)
You mean to tell me that toasting (a highlight of wedding celebrations) is pagan?
Pre-Christian yes, but calling it pagan seems a bit heathen.
Here’s a brief history of the tradition of toasting.

How to identify common wine taints and Amorim trying to help
One source of the contamination can be the cork, TCA deriving from a natural mould that thrives in the cork tree’s bark. But most TCA taint comes from other sources pre-bottling and a cork can actually prevent airborne contamination, or so it is claimed.

Why don’t Americans drink wine with lunch?
Even when we dine in restaurants with kitchens that turn out carefully prepared, sophisticated food that begs for wine accompaniment, we don’t drink wine at lunch, for the most part. We say, “I’m fine with just water,” or we upgrade to sparkling water or some other nonalcoholic beverage. We do this partly because returning to the office with boozy breath is taboo in our work-worshipping culture.

Bacardi Targets Cognac, Whisky Drinkers With Premium Portfolio Revamp
Bacardi is looking to bring more consumers into the high-end rum category with a major revamp of its upscale range. The rum giant has added two new premium offerings—Bacardi Añejo Cuatro and Gran Reserva Diez—to the portfolio of its flagship brand. According to Bacardi, the move is expected to tap nascent trading-up trends within the U.S. rum category, which, thus far, has premiumized at a far slower pace than other spirits segments like Tequila and whisk(e)y.
“It’s no secret that rum has been on the decline for the past 10 years. But where we’re seeing growth is within the premium side of the category,” says Bacardi vice president Ned Duggan. “There’s massive opportunity, as rum is the final spirits category whose volume remains predominantly within the standard segment. Only 15% of the value of the rum category is at the premium-plus level.”
The newly launched Bacardi Añejo Cuatro and Gran Reserva Diez retail at $20 and $40 a 750-ml., respectively. They join Bacardi’s existing Gran Reserva Limitada ($100) and Reserva Ocho ($30) labels, with the latter also receiving a packaging update as part of the portfolio refresh. Reserva Ocho has a current U.S. volume of roughly 30,000 cases, while Gran Reserva Limitada sells between 500 to 1,000 cases annually. The revamped portfolio will be targeted toward existing spirits consumers in the 25- to 34-year-old age range, with a focus on metropolitan areas and people who already consume Cognac and whiskies.

Women, especially millennials, are driving wine trends
“We do know from our research that 60 percent of wine consumers are women, so of course, women are very important to the wine industry and for reasons beyond those percentages,” said Jennifer Jo Wiseman, vice president of E&J Gallo Winery. “One reason is because women frequently connect to one another and gathering around food with family and friends.”

What Is Natural Wine…and Why Should You Drink It?
Perhaps you heard the phrase “natural wine” ten years ago, and it referred to a wine bottled without sulfites. And then you tried said wine and experienced something so funky it was off-putting — or, worse yet, bad — because so-called sulfite-free wines, when made poorly, tend to turn quickly, since sulfur acts as a preservative. This is why, when sommeliers tell us they serve natural wines exclusively, they often feel compelled to immediately follow up with this defensive caveat: “But I’d never serve you bad wine.”

MARYSE CHEVRIERE ON ILLUSTRATING WINE TASTING NOTES

FORGET BEER, IRELAND IS ALSO WINE COUNTRY
European wine aficionados traditionally think of France, Italy or Spain when it comes to quality vino.
However, Ireland has had a wine culture that dates back 16 centuries.
Like many countries, the Irish involvement with wine started with monks. Monasteries needed wine for mass and monks made it. So in the 5th century a Cistercian monastery in County Kilkenny started a vineyard.
Ireland is now home to five vineyards in counties including Dublin, Waterford and Cork.
Jim Beam And Bud Partner
Jim Beam and Budweiser have collaborated on a new cross-merchandising campaign and limited-edition beer. Inspired by the “beer and a Bourbon shot,” occasion, the joint marketing push pairs the two brands together at on- and off-premise venues across the U.S., effective immediately. Additionally, Budweiser brewmasters and Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe are set to debut Budweiser Reserve Copper Lager this September. The limited release brew—made with two-row barley and aged on Jim Beam Bourbon barrel staves—will honor the 85th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition.

Why buyers want super varietal wines 1st, country of origin 2nd
The world of wine is slowly being dominated by what could be referred to as the “Super Varietal”. Grape varieties that now sell the wine far more than the country, the region or even the producer where they are made. Driven by private label and exclusive wine ranges and a number of high profile wine brands that all make the grape variety the hero, it is changing the face of wine buying, particularly in a year when there is so less wine to buy.

Wine Coolers Are Back And Here Are A Few Worth Trying
Wine coolers have come a long way since the 1980s. In those days, brands like Bartles & Jaymes and their cloyingly sweet “wines” reigned supreme. In the height of the John Hughes era, everyone drank these sugary drinks — which tasted more like soda than wine. They were cheaply made, low in alcohol, and high in sugar and extra additives. Not surprisingly, they usually led to a wicked hangover.

On Tasting Notes
There are few aspects of wine culture as reviled, ridiculed, and distrusted by the public as tasting notes. To many, they symbolize everything that is wrong about wine: the obscure and absurd nature of the language; the obsession with ludicrously trivial aspects; the sheer amount of fresh manure it seems to involve. Every single thing about it feels wrong.

Why do most wines require preservatives when beers don’t?
There are two key differences between beer and wine. Firstly, beer is usually pasteurised, while wine is not. And secondly, beer is packaged while it still contains the carbon dioxide produced during fermentation. Wine has lost most of its CO² by the time it’s bottled and needs a preservative, usually sulphur dioxide.

Guide To The Various Types of Wine Corks
A wide variety of types of wine corks and bottle stoppers exist to preserve wine. Some winemakers — especially those who mass produce value wines — are using metal twist off caps instead of corks. While cork type (or lack there of) in some ways affects wine flavor over time, as well as our perception of taste, it’s also critical in protecting wines as they age. Some corks are more reliable than others.

Blue Moon founder Keith Villa and his wife Jodi are launching Ceria, a new brand of cannabis-infused non-alcoholic craft beverages containing THC, a key psychoactive chemical from cannabis plants. The Villas say that Ceria’s products will be “designed to deliver a consistent user experience with the same onset time as alcohol.” Based in the Denver suburb of Arvada, Colorado, the plan is for Ceria to launch at least three variants of “cannabis beers”—light, regular and full-bodied—where legal by the end of 2018. Ceria is partnered with cannabinoid research firm Ebbu, also based in Colorado. Villa retired from MillerCoors in January after 32 years with the company.

We Shouldn’t Sacrifice Creativity for Ideology

Drink Better Wine!
U.S. restaurants are among the best in the world, specialty food shops are proliferating, and we have farmer’s markets in every town large enough to feature a traffic light.

Folks in Belgium are being given quite the opportunity to drink wine inside of a hotel that has been designed to look like an anus. The hotel is called CasAnus Hotel. Kim Crawford Looks To Premiumize With New Upscale Range
Constellation’s Kim Crawford is extending at the high end with a new Signature Reserve line of wines. The first entry in the range is a Sauvignon Blanc retailing at $25 a 750-ml., compared with the core brand’s $18 price point. Constellation says the new offering—sourced from the lower Wairau sub-region of Marlborough, New Zealand—is in response to consumer demand for richer, more complex expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, and has big aromatics and a ripe tropical character. Each vineyard parcel is fermented separately in small lots. A total of 20,000 9-liter cases of Kim Crawford’s Signature Reserve Sauvignon Blanc were produced, with 6,800 cases coming to the U.S; the new wine will be available nationwide by the end of this month. Kim Crawford depleted 1.3 million cases in the U.S. in 2017 on growth of 13%, according to Impact Databank.

French see red over health minister’s wine warning
Agnès Buzyn caused anger in Bordeaux, Burgundy and other vineyard regions by denouncing as fallacious claims that wine could be beneficial and increase longevity. She said it was an “alcohol like any other” and as bad for the health as beer, whisky or vodka.

Wine-quality scores for premium wines are not consistent through time
When dealing with professional wine-quality scores, the usual attitude seems to be: “one wine, one score”. We have all seen wine retailers where, for each wine, only one quality score is advertised from each well-known wine critic or magazine. This is often either the most recent score that has been provided, or it is the highest score that has been given to that particular wine.

What Really Is Natural Wine?
If you’re even slightly into wine, you’ve probably heard about natural wine. Natural wine is the unfiltered, untamed, un-photoshopped version of what we know to be wine. In most cases, natural wine doesn’t look or taste like a typical wine. In fact, some natural wines taste more like a sour beer or kombucha!

Increasing imports are expected to continue in the lower premium price points
