Why Are There Falcons In The Vineyards?
The falcons are by no means cutting-edge winemaking tools: The business has been around for decades in Sacramento. The birds are pest control, chasing out the starlings that often nibble through grapes.

Spirits Sales Rose 4% to $26.2 Billion In U.S. Market In 2017, According To Distilled Spirits Council
Supplier sales of distilled spirits in the U.S market rose by 4%, or $1 billion, last year, to hit $26.2 billion, according to the Distilled Spirits Council. Volumes rose by 2.6% to 226 million cases, a rise of 5.8 million cases from the prior year.
Spirits also continued to gain market share against beer, rising 0.7% to 36.6% of the total beverage alcohol market. The increase marks the eighth straight year of market share gains, where each point of market share is worth $720 million in supplier sales revenue.
On the international front, the trade association also projected a new export record of $1.63 billion of U.S. spirits sold around the globe in 2017, up 14.3% over 2016. Consumer tastes for premium American spirits and favorable exchange rates drove global sales, especially to markets where U.S. spirits enjoy duty-free access. Volumes were up 5%.
The top five growth markets by dollar value included the United Kingdom, up $55.7 million to $177.9 million (+45.6%); Germany, up $22.6 million to $123.5 million (+22.4%); Brazil, up $18.9 million to $29.1 million (+186.5%); France, up $15.7 million to $114.1 million (+16%); and Spain, up $14.5 million to $117.1 million (+14.1).

Napa wine industry fights to protect Napa Valley name on labels
The loophole, as opponents refer to it, allows wineries that hold a certificate exempting a wine of theirs from label approval (called a Certificate of Labeling Approval, or COLA, exemption) to buy out-of-state grapes, make the wine in their state and label it with the origin of the grapes, as long as the wine is then sold only in the state where it was made.

Sales hours will be restricted to allow for stores to open at 12 noon. The latest allowable closing hour will be 11:00 PM, as it is for all other days of operation

Why We Believe In Wine Education!
Strong competition in wine sales will increase
According to Wine Business Monthly, roughly 90 percent of wine sold in the U.S. comes from the 30 top producers, and more than half of the wine sold domestically comes from E. & J. Gallo, The Wine Group and Constellation Brands. The fact that most of the domestic wine sold in this country is produced by a handful of companies is not shocking. What is shocking is that there are now more than 9,000 domestic wineries competing for the remaining 10 percent of sales.

Does size really matter?
The bigger the bottle, for instance, the longer the wine will age well. There’s less space (not oxygen, because that was removed and refilled with Nitrogen) at the top of the bottle. With less space at the top, it gives the wine a longer time to age.

Traditional Bordeaux Wine Labels Are Getting A Makeover
A 2007 study from the University of California, Berkeley, identified that the image on a wine label has a stronger impact on market success and brand personality than the color or layout of the label. Images of grape motifs or chateaux and vineyards scored well, while those of ‘unusual animals’ ranked lowest.
The 2016 Survey of American Wine Consumer Preferences showed similar results—with 64% of Americans favoring traditional labels over ‘modern’ or ‘fun/whimsical’ labels.

Exploring California Wineries Bell And Schug
It will be a treat to feature wines from two legendary wine figures in Napa Valley history, Anthony Bell (Bell Wine Cellars) and Walter Schug (Schug Vineyard & Winery). Walter Schug grew up in Germany and his experience was sought out by Joseph Phelps in 1973. Walter made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend, their well known Insignia label. However, Walter’s passion was Pinot Noir and when Phelps cut their Pinot Noir program, Walter purchased land in Napa’s Carneros District and Schug Vineyard and Winery was born in 1980.
Anthony Bell, came to America by the way of South Africa. He immediately made his mark on the California wine scene by taking over from legendary wine maker Andre Tchelistcheff. Anthony would now be in charge of making the Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) “Georges de Latour” Private Reserve Wines. Anthony would eventually grow his responsibilities to become BV’s General Manager. However, as Napa became more corporate, Anthony wanted to return to his true passion, wine making. In 1991 Bell Wine Cellars was founded and has produced Award Winning wines on his terms.

Proemio Wines Event
Tuesday September 20th 2016
Proemio – Prologue in old Medieval Spanish, stands for kick- start or first page. This is indeed the beginning of the winery’s story. In 2001, Marcelo Bocardo, third generation winemaker and the descendant of a traditional Italian immigrant family founded Proemio with the goal of producing high quality wines that truly represent his ancestors’ passion for viticulture and a legacy for the generations to come.
Proemio Wines are unique due to the personality imposed on them. They assure an important grape concentration with selective extraction of aromas, tannins and poly-phenols. All these processes aim at giving excellent volume, body and structure. Outstanding vineyards, passionate people, experience and friendship come together in the creation of their wines. Finally, aging is carried out in the finest French oak accompanied by a long bottling period.

An Italian Night With Claudio Event
Thursday September 15th 2016
Claudio Andreani (US Brand Ambassador) of Tenute Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari of Tuscany, a great portfolio that includes Nozzole in Chianti Classico, La Fuga in Montalcino, TorCalvano in Montepulciano as well as Campo al Mare in Bolgheri.
“The Folonari family has been making wine since the late eighteenth century. In 1825 the family-owned business took the name “Fratelli Folonari” and adopted the mission of developing, producing and distributing the finest Italian wines throughout the world. In 1912, Italo Folonari – Ambrogio Folonari’s grandfather – and his brother Francesco purchased the Ruffino company in Tuscany that was famous for its Chianti wine in straw-covered flasks. After World War II, major changes in terms of economic development and improving standards of living began taking place in Italy. This also affected the wine industry where the Folonari family and Ambrogio in particular were among the first to promote this trend by producing new, high quality wines that contributed to creating the “new frontier” of the Italian wine. Ambrogio and his father Giovanni own some of the top Tuscan estates in Tuscany’s main appellations such as Nozzole in Chianti Classico, La Fuga in Montalcino, TorCalvano in Montepulciano, Cabreo in Panzano as well as Campo al Mare in Bolgheri.”
