Exploring Wines Of Joseph Carr And Josh

Host Adam Cataldo

Please join us for an immersive tasting experience as we weave through the story of Joseph Carr.

We will talk about how Joe discovered his passion for wine; what led him to starting his namesake label from the Napa Valley; and how the wine he made to honor his father, Josh, became one of America’s most beloved Cabernets.

You’ll have the opportunity to taste and discover how the Josh Cellars varietals compare with their Joseph Carr counterparts

Adams Bio

Adam Cataldo is a recovering history major, IT guy, and bartender who has spent the last 8 years in the wine and spirits industry. He can often be found spreading the good word of Josh Cellars throughout South Eastern Massachusetts as its District Manager for Deutsch Family Wine and Spirits, at least when he’s not complaining about the Boston Bruins.

Exploring Michele Chiarlo Wines

Host: Adam Verona

Since 1956 Michele Chiarlo is synonym with the wines of Piemonte. At a very young age Michele started to travel to showcase with unlimited passion what Piemonte could produce. With Michele’s guidance now his sons Stefano and Alberto have taken over different roles and are carrying on their father’s passion. The story of Michele Chiarlo as a wine producer starts with Barbera and specifically from Asti but quickly moves to cover all the top areas of Piemonte, Gavi, Barolo, Barbaresco and more.

The philosophy at the winery is to produce classic wines of terroir with the most up to date know how and still vivid passion.

Adams Bio

As Michele Chiarlo’s North American Brand Ambassador, Adam makes regular trips to Piedmont, Italy and works closely with Michele’s sons Alberto (sales and marketing) and Stefano (winemaking and technical aspects).

Adam has had a passion for wine and food for as long as he can remember. He began his wine studies in his early twenties that included an internship on a Tuscan vineyard, gaining hands on experience in every phase of wine production.

After years of representing Chiarlo wines in wholesale, he was introduced to the Michele Chiarlo family. In 2016 he took the position with the winery and now travels the United States and Canada, proudly promoting the Chiarlo family wines. Adam lives in Charleston, South Carolina with his wife and son.

Exploring Poderi Gianni Gagliardo Wines

Host: Vito Candela

Franklin Wine Club Event Held in the Franklin Liquors wine room.

The Gagliardo family has been deeply rooted in the history of cultivating grapes and producing wines in Piemonte, one of the most prestigious wine regions, since 1848. The Gagliardo ancestors, the Colla family, initially began producing Moscato from Santo Stefano Belbo. Then the next generation of the family moved to Diano d’Alba producing Dolcetto, and finally Paolo Colla bought a small farm and vineyard in La Morra in the Barolo region and started producing Barolo wine with the care and attention that only a great passion and respect for the land can provide.

We will explore:

Favorita, Barbera, Dolcetto, Barolo and Brachetto

Vito Bio:

Born in 1960 and brought up in Bari, Puglia.

Vito Candela came the first time to the USA in 1982 to study Business Administration at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.

In 1990 while on vacation in Cartagena, Colombia he decided to move there and start his own import business in the food and wine industry in which he had worked in while going to school in the states.

Some of the top Italian producers where part of his company’s portfolio which became shortly one of the largest in South America.

While in Bogotá on a business trip he met his wife Claudia with whom he has two children Vincenzo and Maria Josè.

In 1998 after an interesting experience with the Colombian guerrilla, he moved his family to the United States where a Tuscan winery offered him the positions of North America Export Director.

Intrigued by the challenge he accepted the position.

In 2005 he was promoted to Vice President North America.

In July 2013 he joined a large Italian Wine Group as VP North Americas until September 2017 when he decided to start his own company and to work with Top family owned wineries like Poderi Gianni Gagliardo in Barolo and Barbera.

Among his hobbies, racing Ducati Superbikes, working out, fishing and of course tasting great wines from all over the world.

Some of the best pours in wine country happen in industrial parks

The words “wine country” conjure images of beautiful vistas and vine rows marching (or sprawling, depending on viticultural philosophies) into the sunset. But as you plan your wine country vacations this year, don’t ignore the industrial parks, the winery co-ops or the “custom crush” facilities where several winemakers pool their resources. Warehouses may not be as sexy as sunsets, but some of the best wines are being made in the most unscenic places.

The method, which involves the removal of selected leaves to reduce the photosynthetic ability of the vine and thus the sugar accumulation, can be used by wineries that are struggling to control the alcohol levels in their wines due to global warming.

Exploring Pizza And Wine

Hosts: Courtney Nappa, Ciro Pirone

Is there anything better than pizza and wine?

Ciro will talk and pair Italian wines with Courtney’s 360 Pizzeria & Italian Kitchen.

Three pizza styles will be matched with two wines each.

About Ciro

Ciro Pirone, Director of Italian Wines for Horizon Beverage Company, is a graduate of the Istituto Alberghiero (Hotel and Restaurant Management school) of Salerno, Italy and a Certified Italian Wine Specialist by the NASA (North American Sommelier Association affiliated with the Italian Sommelier Association). Traveling and working in Italy, England and the US, Ciro developed an incredible passion for wine, food and culture. After all, growing up in Italy, wine was always a very important part of his family’s lifestyle and traditions.

In 1999, Ciro moved to the US permanently. He landed in Boston, where he continued his wine studies at Boston University, the International Sommelier Guild, the London –based Wine & Spirits Educational Trust (WSET), as well as he completed and passed with Honors the Italian Wine Specialist Certification by the North American Sommelier Association (part of the worldwide recognized Italian Sommelier Association). In June of 2017 he completed the Vinitaly Wine Academy and received the prestigious Vinitaly Wine Ambassador certification.

In 2007, Ciro accepted the position of Italian Wine Specialist for Horizon Beverage. After successful growth at HBC, Ciro accepted on a new challenge as the US Brand Manager for the Arnaldo Caprai Winery of Montefalco (Umbria), the top producer of worldwide recognized Sagrantino di Montefalco. In June 2011, Ciro returned to Horizon Beverage with a new position of Director of Italian Wines in support of their expanding presence in the New England marketplace. Ciro is happy to share his passion for Italian wine and culture in an effort to give the American wine consumer a better understanding and appreciation for Italian wine!

BRAZIL: THE NEXT SPARKLING WINE DESTINATION

Sparkling wines are generally associated with the Old World wine regions, like France, Spain, and Italy, which is fair because they’ve been around for absolutely ever. The cool thing about the modern wine industry is that there are countries all over the world that are gearing up their own production and putting their name in the hat for the New World best wines.

Wine’s share of world alcohol consumption by volume has been dropping since the 1960s

Pairing Cannabis With Food like Wine With Food is a Ploy

Everyone’s body chemistry and everyone’s tolerance for alcohol is different. For myself, I can probably enjoy upwards of 30 or 40 sips of wine with a meal before questioning my reason for being at the table and before the ability to appreciate the pairing of wine and food goes by the wayside.

Now, ask yourself this same question, but replace “wines” with cannabis strains, “wine” with cannabis and replace “sips” with “hits off a vape pen”. In other words, How many different strains of cannabis can you enjoy with a meal and how many hits of cannabis can you combine with a meal before you are uselessly stoned?

The other ‘4Ps’ of Italian wine

While the textbook definition of the 4Ps Product, Place, Price & Promotion might be used to explain the success of Italian wine in export markets, the truth is that the category benefits more from another set of 4Ps: Pizza, Pasta, Prosecco and Pinot Grigio, as seen at this year’s Vinitaly

5 CLASSIC CHAMPAGNE COCKTAILS THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SPRING

New Stoli Flavor

Stoli Group USA has extended its namesake vodka brand with a new Cucumber offshoot. The expression marks the first flavor to join the core Stoli range in more than five years. Infused with notes of savory cucumber, the 37.5%-abv entry is designed to be served on the rocks or in cocktails, and will be available nationwide starting this month, retail priced at $20 a 750-ml. A package featuring Stoli Cucumber with Tajín chile seasoning affixed to the bottle will also be available at select retail outlets, providing consumers a built-in garnish. The Stoli brand was up 0.8% to 1.73 million 9-liter cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.

Rosé: Wave hits Wall?

Pardon the pun, but the outlook for rosé is still rosy, right? The category’s double-digit growth just begins to hint at the pink success story. Over the past four years, rosé has almost quadrupled in volume and jumped in varietal wine rank from #17 to #9, according to Nielsen. Rosé’s largest segment is $11-$15, so premiumization is already at play. Plus, consumption is still accelerating. Americans drank 67% more rosé in 2017 than they did in 2016, and that year was up by 44% over 2015.

Why your Wine Brand Needs a Digital Marketing Strategy

In 2014, Constellation Brands, a leading premium wine company, invested 25 percent of its wine and spirits marketing budget on digital, with a particular focus on mobile, given that wine drinkers tend to be heavy users of these devices. A 200 percent increase has been observed in digital engagement, and while in the past, the company leveraged third-party apps such as Hello Vino and Shopkick, the focus today is digital engagement.

Minorities vs majorities

What this means is that consumer behavior and shopping habits are far from ‘normal’ in a statistical sense. A few examples:

Bird Repellent Alternatives to Gas Cannons and Netting

Over recent years, the emergence of falcon replica kites has issued a challenge to more established opinions on how to scare birds away from vineyards. One fact that has not changed is that bird damage to grapes incurs a significant cost that justifies reducing to the economic minimum. With grapes at $4000 a ton and losses in the range of 10-80%, the cost of bird damage is very significant indeed.

Prosecco Still On A Strong Rise, But Growth Appears To Be Decelerating

Global growth of Prosecco slowed somewhat in 2017, as export shipments increased just 4.6% in volume terms to 28.8 million 9-liter cases, compared to 19% growth the year prior. Shipment volume to the United States also decelerated last year, rising 5% to 5.5 million cases. That marked the first time in five years that Prosecco failed to grow by double-digits in the American market. In IRI channels, Prosecco was up 30% in the U.S. in 2016, but slowed to 17% in 2017, and in the 24 weeks through March 24, volume growth decelerated to 11%.

The points system for wine is a crutch
Here’s the problem: there’s lots of good wine out there that’s not going to score above 90 points, and it can be unjustly ignored. As wine lovers also know, the vast majority of wines on this planet are bought and consumed within four to eight hours of purchase — in other words, everyday drinking wines, not the high-end stuff like the Bordeaux first growths that are meant, and often need, to be laid down for number of years before they reach maturity.

Wine store ‘shelf talkers’ have a message to convey

These so-called “shelf talkers” are typically placed there by wholesale wine reps who want you to buy their wine and that’s perfectly acceptable.
