My favorite wine switched from corks to screwcaps. Will that impact the quality?

No, the wine is not compromised by a screwcap. In fact, it’s quite possible the producer made the switch to screwcaps to better ensure the quality of the wine. Even though screwcaps used to be associated with inexpensive wines, more and more wineries are switching to them, and not just for the affordable wines.

I understand there can be an emotional connection to wines bottled under cork. But cork brings with it the possibility of cork taint, when a wine becomes contaminated by TCA (the chemical compound 2,4,6-trichloroanisole), which mutes wine’s aromas and flavors and can cause it to smell musty or moldy—what’s referred to as a “corked” wine. To be fair, TCA can also come from barrels or other sources of wood, but eliminating corks is one way to battle the problem. Using screwcaps also eliminates the problems of crumbly or otherwise compromised corks, which can lead to oxidized wines.

I’ve been lucky enough to sit through multiple tastings of wines aged under screwcaps, and the results are great. Wines can age under twist-off tops. In fact, the wines can seem to stay fresher longer.

That’s not to say that corks are bad. The cork industry has invested millions of dollars in improving the quality and consistency of the product over the past decade, and in our own official Wine Spectator blind tastings, we have found that incidences of cork taint are generally on the decline.

Change is hard, and a new closure can feel like a strange adjustment, but I recommend thinking of your wine purchases based on the wine inside, not the way the wine is sealed.

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates has launched Prayers of Sinners & Saints, a new pair of wines. Prayers of Saints, meanwhile, is a 100% Chardonnay offering that includes 7% “Black Chardonnay”—so-called because the juice is oxidized before fermentation, thus reducing bitterness—and is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Both wines will be available starting in March, retailing at $13 a 750-ml.

Was Burgundy the only wine region impacted by Napoleonic Code?

Let me start with a quick history lesson for those who aren’t familiar with the Napoleonic Code and how it shaped the wine regions of Europe. Most French land, including vineyards, was in the hands of the Catholic Church or the nobility prior to the French Revolution, which resulted in the confiscation of much of the land belonging to those institutions. Most of the vineyards were divided up and sold off. The Napoleonic Code of the early 1800s, which spread well beyond the modern-day boundaries of France under Napoleon’s French Empire, required landowners to divide their holdings equally among their heirs. So generation after generation, the land was further subdivided.

Why does this matter to wine? It’s one explanation for how complicated Burgundy has become. For example, the grand cru vineyard Clos de Vougeot, which was owned by the Cistercian monks until the late 18th century. It’s now broken up into more than 80 individually owned parcels, some comprising just a few rows of vines.

This practice happened all over, but not every region went the way of Burgundy. Some Bordeaux châteaus were owned by wealthy families, who decided to eliminate the issue of heirs by incorporating their estates. They developed a system of shareholders for their estates, and shareholders weren’t subject to the same succession laws. As a result, many Bordeaux châteaus remain large and have even grown over time.

The Napoleonic Code took its toll on other wine regions around France (and in Germany). But some properties were pieced together with trusts and other shareholder-type systems. There is a lot of emphasis on the Burgundy’s history vineyards, which is why the Napoleonic Code is most often cited in reference to Burgundy, but if you look carefully, you’ll find evidence of it’s influence elsewhere.

IF I WANT TO CHILL A BOTTLE OF WINE QUICKLY IN MY FREEZER, WILL IT DAMAGE THE WINE?

Many of us have been in this situation. You have a warm bottle and you want to cool it quickly so you can drink it.

While I am a much bigger proponent of making an ice bath with water, ice, and salt, if you’re in a pinch and need to use your freezer, the wine should be fine. Just don’t forget about it. I find 30 minutes in the freezer does the trick.

If you walk away and forget about the wine for a few hours, what’s inside a frozen bottle will indeed be damaged. Freezing wine causes its fruit notes to disappear, even after it has thawed. It will accentuate flavors that many would consider bitter, including that astringent, alcohol taste. And if you leave the wine in the freezer for an even longer time, you risk it also becoming oxidized or getting freezer burn.

Suffice it to say, if you use your freezer to quickly cool that bottle, do not forget about it!

Three Finger Jack

Delicato Family Wines has launched Three Finger Jack East Side Ridge, a new Cabernet Sauvignon. Retailing at $22 750-ml., Three Finger Jack is sourced from vineyards on the east side of Lodi, with its name referencing a legendary outlaw who roamed the Sierra Foothills of California during the Gold Rush. Three Finger Jack East Side Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon is rolling out nationally.

Mnt Difficulty Sold

Foley Family Wines has acquired New Zealand’s Mt. Difficulty wine estate for NZ$52 million ($35m). According to the Otago Daily Times, the purchase includes just under 200 hectares (494 acres) of land in New Zealand’s Central Otago region, where the winery produces Pinot Noir, Riesling, and other varietals. The initial price was NZ$55 million ($23.6m) though the price was dropped after Foley committed to NZ$3 million ($2m) in expansion and investment. The purchase was first proposed in late 2017, but did not receive Overseas Investment Office approval until recently.

Mezcal’s popularity puts pressure on producers

New Svedka Rosé Vodka

Svedka has unveiled a new Rosé extension, a 30%-abv vodka containing 5% rosé wine. Launching next month at $17 a 1-liter bottle, the new expression will have dedicated advertising through the brand’s recently introduced “Bring Your Own Spirit” campaign, and will receive the largest spend for any Svedka flavor launch to date. Constellation tells SND that the rosé vodka holds strategic value for the brand as it looks to expand in on-premise markets.

“Svedka was built in the off-premise, and we continue to dominate in that channel,” says Carl Evans, Constellation’s vice president for spirits marketing. “Based on the Rosé movement in the on-premise, we’re confident this SKU will flourish there as well. We’ve been laser-focused on programming for the on-premise and have seen tremendous potential for Svedka Rosé within the cocktail culture.” According to Impact Databank, Svedka grew 1% to 4.4 million cases in the U.S. last year.

Mondavi Targets Female Drinkers With New Flat Top Hills Brand

Mondavi & Family is introducing a new California wine brand, Flat Top Hills, aimed at female consumers in their 30s and 40s with household income in the $45,000-$80,000 range. The new brand includes five wines: a Sauvignon Blanc ($14), Rosé ($14), Chardonnay ($14), Red Blend ($16), and Cabernet Sauvignon ($16).

“We’re looking to strengthen our overall brand portfolio with the addition of Flat Top Hills in a growing price segment,” says Mark Koppen, C. Mondavi’s vice president of marketing. The new franchise will debut February 1 in select on- and off-premise accounts in Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, with additional markets slated to launch this fall. Sourced from Yolo County, Dunnigan Hills, Monterey Coast, Lodi, Sonoma County, and the Central Coast, the brand is named for the flat-topped summits of the Mondavi family’s Dunnigan Hills vineyards, where consulting winemaker Angelina Mondavi and her siblings and cousins played as children.

Overall, C. Mondavi had volume of over 1.5 million cases last year. “We’re seeing strong trends in our core Charles Krug Napa Valley wines as well as our CK Mondavi and Family line of everyday wines,” Koppen notes, adding that Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet varietals are performing especially well, and that the company is seeing “some positive signs in Merlot.”

Which foods or beverages should I avoid before a wine tasting? And is there anything that I should be eating or drinking before a tasting?

Good question—professional tasters have a variety of pregame rituals. This is also a good time to bring up that before (and while) tasting wine, it’s smart to avoid heavy scents, like perfume, smoke or even lotions and soaps. It’s also important to pay attention to certain supplements or drugs, prescription or otherwise, that might interfere with your taste buds (or be contra-indicated with alcohol, even if you are spitting). Some antibiotics can cause a bitter aftertaste, for example.

Every taster has their own list of foods that might personally clash with wines. For me, things like Brussels sprouts, raw garlic or onions and cauliflower tend to repeat on me, and that aftertaste can be very distracting. I also avoid the foods that are known to fight with wine: asparagus, artichokes, oily fishes (no tuna fish sandwiches!), vinegar and pickled items. Some tasters avoid coffee and tea, which both also have a lot of tannins, before a tasting. Bitter and spicy foods can also sensitize taste buds, causing tannins or acidity to seem harsher.

In general, professional tasters tend to make sure to stay hydrated (with water), and most stick to healthy, neutral meals on tasting days. I also like to taste when I’m a little bit hungry—I feel like it heightens my perceptions—but it’s a fine line, because I hate to taste when I’m starving, because I find a grumbling tummy distracting. Some tasters also like to eat plain crackers during a tasting, which can help alleviate tannin fatigue.
