My favorite wine switched from corks to screwcaps. Will that impact the quality?
No, the wine is not compromised by a screwcap. In fact, it’s quite possible the producer made the switch to screwcaps to better ensure the quality of the wine. Even though screwcaps used to be associated with inexpensive wines, more and more wineries are switching to them, and not just for the affordable wines.
I understand there can be an emotional connection to wines bottled under cork. But cork brings with it the possibility of cork taint, when a wine becomes contaminated by TCA (the chemical compound 2,4,6-trichloroanisole), which mutes wine’s aromas and flavors and can cause it to smell musty or moldy—what’s referred to as a “corked” wine. To be fair, TCA can also come from barrels or other sources of wood, but eliminating corks is one way to battle the problem. Using screwcaps also eliminates the problems of crumbly or otherwise compromised corks, which can lead to oxidized wines.
I’ve been lucky enough to sit through multiple tastings of wines aged under screwcaps, and the results are great. Wines can age under twist-off tops. In fact, the wines can seem to stay fresher longer.
That’s not to say that corks are bad. The cork industry has invested millions of dollars in improving the quality and consistency of the product over the past decade, and in our own official Wine Spectator blind tastings, we have found that incidences of cork taint are generally on the decline.
Change is hard, and a new closure can feel like a strange adjustment, but I recommend thinking of your wine purchases based on the wine inside, not the way the wine is sealed.

Was Burgundy the only wine region impacted by Napoleonic Code?
Let me start with a quick history lesson for those who aren’t familiar with the Napoleonic Code and how it shaped the wine regions of Europe. Most French land, including vineyards, was in the hands of the Catholic Church or the nobility prior to the French Revolution, which resulted in the confiscation of much of the land belonging to those institutions. Most of the vineyards were divided up and sold off. The Napoleonic Code of the early 1800s, which spread well beyond the modern-day boundaries of France under Napoleon’s French Empire, required landowners to divide their holdings equally among their heirs. So generation after generation, the land was further subdivided.
Why does this matter to wine? It’s one explanation for how complicated Burgundy has become. For example, the grand cru vineyard Clos de Vougeot, which was owned by the Cistercian monks until the late 18th century. It’s now broken up into more than 80 individually owned parcels, some comprising just a few rows of vines.
This practice happened all over, but not every region went the way of Burgundy. Some Bordeaux châteaus were owned by wealthy families, who decided to eliminate the issue of heirs by incorporating their estates. They developed a system of shareholders for their estates, and shareholders weren’t subject to the same succession laws. As a result, many Bordeaux châteaus remain large and have even grown over time.
The Napoleonic Code took its toll on other wine regions around France (and in Germany). But some properties were pieced together with trusts and other shareholder-type systems. There is a lot of emphasis on the Burgundy’s history vineyards, which is why the Napoleonic Code is most often cited in reference to Burgundy, but if you look carefully, you’ll find evidence of it’s influence elsewhere.

IF I WANT TO CHILL A BOTTLE OF WINE QUICKLY IN MY FREEZER, WILL IT DAMAGE THE WINE?
Many of us have been in this situation. You have a warm bottle and you want to cool it quickly so you can drink it.
While I am a much bigger proponent of making an ice bath with water, ice, and salt, if you’re in a pinch and need to use your freezer, the wine should be fine. Just don’t forget about it. I find 30 minutes in the freezer does the trick.
If you walk away and forget about the wine for a few hours, what’s inside a frozen bottle will indeed be damaged. Freezing wine causes its fruit notes to disappear, even after it has thawed. It will accentuate flavors that many would consider bitter, including that astringent, alcohol taste. And if you leave the wine in the freezer for an even longer time, you risk it also becoming oxidized or getting freezer burn.
Suffice it to say, if you use your freezer to quickly cool that bottle, do not forget about it!
Three Finger Jack
Delicato Family Wines has launched Three Finger Jack East Side Ridge, a new Cabernet Sauvignon. Retailing at $22 750-ml., Three Finger Jack is sourced from vineyards on the east side of Lodi, with its name referencing a legendary outlaw who roamed the Sierra Foothills of California during the Gold Rush. Three Finger Jack East Side Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon is rolling out nationally.
Mnt Difficulty Sold
Foley Family Wines has acquired New Zealand’s Mt. Difficulty wine estate for NZ$52 million ($35m). According to the Otago Daily Times, the purchase includes just under 200 hectares (494 acres) of land in New Zealand’s Central Otago region, where the winery produces Pinot Noir, Riesling, and other varietals. The initial price was NZ$55 million ($23.6m) though the price was dropped after Foley committed to NZ$3 million ($2m) in expansion and investment. The purchase was first proposed in late 2017, but did not receive Overseas Investment Office approval until recently.
