French see red over health minister’s wine warning
Agnès Buzyn caused anger in Bordeaux, Burgundy and other vineyard regions by denouncing as fallacious claims that wine could be beneficial and increase longevity. She said it was an “alcohol like any other” and as bad for the health as beer, whisky or vodka.

Wine-quality scores for premium wines are not consistent through time
When dealing with professional wine-quality scores, the usual attitude seems to be: “one wine, one score”. We have all seen wine retailers where, for each wine, only one quality score is advertised from each well-known wine critic or magazine. This is often either the most recent score that has been provided, or it is the highest score that has been given to that particular wine.

What Really Is Natural Wine?
If you’re even slightly into wine, you’ve probably heard about natural wine. Natural wine is the unfiltered, untamed, un-photoshopped version of what we know to be wine. In most cases, natural wine doesn’t look or taste like a typical wine. In fact, some natural wines taste more like a sour beer or kombucha!

Is the Endless Growth of the Wine Industry Coming to an End?
The 2018 outlook suggests that overall wine industry pricing will remain flat, with price increases difficult to pass through to consumers. The premium wine segment, with bottles over $10 apiece, is called to grow in a range of 4% to 8%, down from the estimate of 10% to 14% in 2017. Increasing imports are expected to continue in the lower premium price points

New UFO Flavor
The Massachusetts Bay Brewing Company’s UFO brand has launched its newest core offering: UFO Pineapple. The 5.2%-abv Hefeweizen is brewed to be sweet, refreshing and easy drinking, according to the brewery. The flavored wheat ale is now available on draft and in six-packs of 12-ounce cans and bottles nationwide. UFO Pineapple is the brand’s second release of the year, following the seasonal UFO Apricot.
New Light Beer Line
MillerCoors has launched Two Hats, a 4.2%-abv light beer range that features two flavor options, lime and pineapple. Aimed at the 21-24-year-old demographic, Two Hats is rolling out nationwide in 16-ounce cans that retail at around $5 a six-pack depending on the market. MillerCoors is billing the brand as an alternative to higher-priced craft brews, and as an accessible entry point into the beer category for the younger generation, which has increasingly been favoring wine or spirits over beer in recent years.

This is why it makes no since to give wines a 100-point score. It implies that no improvement is possible.

How New Alcohol Tax Laws May Affect Your Business
The new laws expand the definition of “table wine” by raising the alcohol by volume (ABV) requirement from a maximum of 14% to 16%—a reflection, Kaiser says, of the way American wines, particularly in California, are made. The change represents a 50-cents-per-gallon savings for wines between 14% and 16% ABV. Now, says Kaiser, “you won’t see people manipulating their wine to get lower alcohol content just so they can pay less tax.”

The winemaker’s shipment volumes were similarly soft, falling 8.6% to around 8.5 million cases, with parent company Altria citing negative impact from “competitive activity, continued trade inventory reductions and slower premium wine category growth.” The company’s full-year results were also hampered by a challenging fourth quarter, during which Ste. Michelle’s net revenues fell 8.5%, to $227 million, and shipments slipped 9.7% to around 2.8 million cases. According to Impact Databank, Ste. Michelle’s 14 Hands and Columbia Crest brands slowed from double-digit growth in 2016 to growth of 2.5% and 1% respectively last year.

Spirits Sales Rose 4% to $26.2 Billion In U.S. Market In 2017, According To Distilled Spirits Council
Supplier sales of distilled spirits in the U.S market rose by 4%, or $1 billion, last year, to hit $26.2 billion, according to the Distilled Spirits Council. Volumes rose by 2.6% to 226 million cases, a rise of 5.8 million cases from the prior year.
Spirits also continued to gain market share against beer, rising 0.7% to 36.6% of the total beverage alcohol market. The increase marks the eighth straight year of market share gains, where each point of market share is worth $720 million in supplier sales revenue.
On the international front, the trade association also projected a new export record of $1.63 billion of U.S. spirits sold around the globe in 2017, up 14.3% over 2016. Consumer tastes for premium American spirits and favorable exchange rates drove global sales, especially to markets where U.S. spirits enjoy duty-free access. Volumes were up 5%.
The top five growth markets by dollar value included the United Kingdom, up $55.7 million to $177.9 million (+45.6%); Germany, up $22.6 million to $123.5 million (+22.4%); Brazil, up $18.9 million to $29.1 million (+186.5%); France, up $15.7 million to $114.1 million (+16%); and Spain, up $14.5 million to $117.1 million (+14.1).

Napa wine industry fights to protect Napa Valley name on labels
The loophole, as opponents refer to it, allows wineries that hold a certificate exempting a wine of theirs from label approval (called a Certificate of Labeling Approval, or COLA, exemption) to buy out-of-state grapes, make the wine in their state and label it with the origin of the grapes, as long as the wine is then sold only in the state where it was made.
