No, Vodka Is Not a ‘Neutral Spirit’

Suntory Global Spirits has released the latest bottling of Booker’s Bourbon, the Phantom Pipes Batch. The 63.2% abv whiskey is a blend of Bourbons from five production dates, with the youngest whiskies in the batch aged for seven and a half years. This iteration of the popular high-proof Bourbon is named for a series of pipes found in the rafters of Beam’s Boston, Kentucky distillery that Booker had built for an unknown purpose. The release is now available in limited quantities across the U.S. for a suggested retail price of $100.

- Campari-owned Russell’s Reserve has released the fourth whiskey in its Single Rickhouse Collection. This year’s whiskey, Camp Nelson E, is blended from barrels found on the fifth floor of the rickhouse and bottled at a barrel proof of 64% abv. According to the company, this is the highest-proof whiskey bottled under the Russell’s Reserve label to date. Russell’s Reserve Single Rickhouse Camp Nelson E is now available in limited quantities across the U.S., carrying a suggested retail price of $300 a 750-ml. Russell’s Reserve had U.S. volume of 83,000 cases last year, according to Impact Databank.

- Brown-Forman has announced Jack Daniel’sSingle Barrel Special Release Tanyard Hill Rye, the newest yearly addition to the brand’s line of specialty high-end releases. This year’s whiskies come in between 65.10% and 74.40% abv, depending on the barrel. The whiskey is made from a mash of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley, and the barrels have been aging since November 2015. The new release is rolling out now in limited quantities across the U.S. at $80 a 700-ml. bottle. Last year, Jack Daniel’s (excluding flavored whiskies and RTDs) was just below five million cases in the U.S., according to Impact Databank.

The lineup includes Tequio Blanco and Reposado Tequila Sodas both at 5% abv, as well as a Tequio Paloma at 6.9% abv that will join the portfolio later this year. Tequio retails at $20 a four-pack of 355-ml. cans. The brand was founded by Louis-Pascal Walsh and Frederick “Flick” Mooradian in Venice, California. Tequio’s RTDs are made with El Mexicano Tequila, also part of the Foley portfolio. “Sitting at the intersection of Tequila and RTDs, the two fastest growing segments, Tequio joins our portfolio alongside our Sabe branded cocktail-strengt h, high-abv canned cocktails,” said Foley CMO Jason Daniel. “Both are highly differentiated brands playing in the most resonant and growth-driving segments of the RTD category.” |

Kendall-Jackson, the 3-million-case California wine brand known for Chardonnay, is introducing its first sparkling offering. The brand’s Vintner’s Reserve Brut Cuvée ($20) is made via the Charmat method from California-sourc ed French Colombard, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir and is bottled at 11% abv. It’s rolling out nationally at retail and online. Parent company Jackson Family Wines noted that sparkling wines have been the strongest part of the wine market for several years, fueled by younger consumers. “Over the past five years, nearly 10 million new consumers have entered the category, with sparkling now accounting for more than 12% of total U.S. wine volume, up from just 8% in 2017,” the company said. “While the holiday season still accounts for about 20% of annual sparkling consumption, demand is increasingly driven by year-round occasions.” |
