Why You Should Be Drinking Weird Wines

In recent years, you may have noticed some unfamiliar names on wine lists alongside your usual chardonnays and pinot noirs — strange, hard-to-pronounce grapes from places where, until recently, many people didn’t even realize wine was made.

9 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DON JULIO TEQUILA

At a time when tequila production meant quantity over quality, Don Julio dared to challenge the status quo: The company coddled its agave, bottled short when everyone else went tall, and even stripped its aged tequila down to crystal-clear agave bones.

Wines made for restaurants solve dilemma

On a fictitious wine list from a nonexistent restaurant you find 2014 Chateau Niedspondiavanci Chardonnay for $45.

You, a savvy, mobile phone-equipped diner, do an Internet search to find out about it: is it worth $45? Where is it from? But the only search-engine results for the brand has nothing about wine, only a reference to a terrible 1942 joke.

This tale illustrates one of the restaurant industry’s most difficult-to-solve problems: how to offer diners wines that don’t compete directly with discount wine shops, a list that could look (and may be) overpriced.

US consumers are drinking less

Wine sales volumes in the USA rose 1% in 2017 on the previous year. The bump is being attributed to the success of sparkling and canned products, and it defies a broader decline in total alcohol consumption of 0.7%, and shrinking consumer numbers, with only 62% of adults saying they drank alcohol in 2017, compared to 65% in 2016.

Premium-Plus Imported Wines Continue Fast Rise, Led By Italy, New Zealand

Though the U.S. market’s total imported wine segment was roughly flat at 67 million 9-liter case depletions last year, according to Impact Databank, the category is seeing significant gains at the premium level. The top 10 imported brands retailing at above $10 a 750-ml. shot ahead by an aggregate 16% last year to more than 9 million cases. Progress was primarily driven by premium-plus offerings from Italy—the leading import segment by value, whose shipments were worth $1.35 billion last year—as well as New Zealand.

Riboli Family Wine Estates’ Stella Rosa remains the largest player in the premium-plus segment, nearing 1.7 million cases on 28% growth last year. The brand, whose core portfolio includes Rosso, Moscato D’Asti, Peach, Pink, and Berry wines ($11-$12 a 750-ml.), now ranks among the U.S. market’s top five imported wine brands overall, and is the only top-five brand priced above $10.

How to sell more wine using Alice in Wonderland world of psychology

Why do some wines sell better than others? Why are people willing to pay more for one wine over another? The answer may lie not in the quality of the wine or how much a person even knows about it, it will most certainly rest in how well you are selling it.

Expensive wines don’t just taste better, they’re also better value for money — here’s why

In terms of getting value for money, unfortunately, you get what you pay for, which sounds really obvious, but there’s a lot of things which go into the price of a wine once it hits the store shelves.

What’s the maximum amount of alcohol a “table wine” can have?

The first thing to note is that wine sold in the U.S. has an alcohol percentage by volume listed. Look carefully—it’s usually in tiny print, or on the edge of the label, but it should be there. If it’s not, and the label reads “red table wine” or “white table wine,” that means the wine is between 7 and 13.9 percent alcohol by volume.

Why Israel Needs A New Map — For Wine

Israel’s current wine map — the one that’s being revised — designates five regions: Galilee, Samaria, Samson, Judean Hills, and Negev. These regional names, printed on the labels of Israeli wine imported to the United States, indicate geographic area — but they hardly describe regionality as it pertains to the characteristics of the wines being grown there. Drawn in the 1970s, the map reflects the traditional regions of Israel. Today, many of the country’s top wines come from single vineyards, and terroir — the properties in the soil that contribute to the wine’s unique character — Matters.

Wine’s share of world alcohol consumption by volume has been dropping since the 1960s

Pairing Cannabis With Food like Wine With Food is a Ploy

Everyone’s body chemistry and everyone’s tolerance for alcohol is different. For myself, I can probably enjoy upwards of 30 or 40 sips of wine with a meal before questioning my reason for being at the table and before the ability to appreciate the pairing of wine and food goes by the wayside.

Now, ask yourself this same question, but replace “wines” with cannabis strains, “wine” with cannabis and replace “sips” with “hits off a vape pen”. In other words, How many different strains of cannabis can you enjoy with a meal and how many hits of cannabis can you combine with a meal before you are uselessly stoned?

The other ‘4Ps’ of Italian wine

While the textbook definition of the 4Ps Product, Place, Price & Promotion might be used to explain the success of Italian wine in export markets, the truth is that the category benefits more from another set of 4Ps: Pizza, Pasta, Prosecco and Pinot Grigio, as seen at this year’s Vinitaly

New Stoli Flavor

Stoli Group USA has extended its namesake vodka brand with a new Cucumber offshoot. The expression marks the first flavor to join the core Stoli range in more than five years. Infused with notes of savory cucumber, the 37.5%-abv entry is designed to be served on the rocks or in cocktails, and will be available nationwide starting this month, retail priced at $20 a 750-ml. A package featuring Stoli Cucumber with Tajín chile seasoning affixed to the bottle will also be available at select retail outlets, providing consumers a built-in garnish. The Stoli brand was up 0.8% to 1.73 million 9-liter cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.

Rosé: Wave hits Wall?

Pardon the pun, but the outlook for rosé is still rosy, right? The category’s double-digit growth just begins to hint at the pink success story. Over the past four years, rosé has almost quadrupled in volume and jumped in varietal wine rank from #17 to #9, according to Nielsen. Rosé’s largest segment is $11-$15, so premiumization is already at play. Plus, consumption is still accelerating. Americans drank 67% more rosé in 2017 than they did in 2016, and that year was up by 44% over 2015.

Why your Wine Brand Needs a Digital Marketing Strategy

In 2014, Constellation Brands, a leading premium wine company, invested 25 percent of its wine and spirits marketing budget on digital, with a particular focus on mobile, given that wine drinkers tend to be heavy users of these devices. A 200 percent increase has been observed in digital engagement, and while in the past, the company leveraged third-party apps such as Hello Vino and Shopkick, the focus today is digital engagement.

Bird Repellent Alternatives to Gas Cannons and Netting

Over recent years, the emergence of falcon replica kites has issued a challenge to more established opinions on how to scare birds away from vineyards. One fact that has not changed is that bird damage to grapes incurs a significant cost that justifies reducing to the economic minimum. With grapes at $4000 a ton and losses in the range of 10-80%, the cost of bird damage is very significant indeed.

Prosecco Still On A Strong Rise, But Growth Appears To Be Decelerating

Global growth of Prosecco slowed somewhat in 2017, as export shipments increased just 4.6% in volume terms to 28.8 million 9-liter cases, compared to 19% growth the year prior. Shipment volume to the United States also decelerated last year, rising 5% to 5.5 million cases. That marked the first time in five years that Prosecco failed to grow by double-digits in the American market. In IRI channels, Prosecco was up 30% in the U.S. in 2016, but slowed to 17% in 2017, and in the 24 weeks through March 24, volume growth decelerated to 11%.

The points system for wine is a crutch
Here’s the problem: there’s lots of good wine out there that’s not going to score above 90 points, and it can be unjustly ignored. As wine lovers also know, the vast majority of wines on this planet are bought and consumed within four to eight hours of purchase — in other words, everyday drinking wines, not the high-end stuff like the Bordeaux first growths that are meant, and often need, to be laid down for number of years before they reach maturity.

Wine store ‘shelf talkers’ have a message to convey

These so-called “shelf talkers” are typically placed there by wholesale wine reps who want you to buy their wine and that’s perfectly acceptable. Pay-to-Play Schemes Keep TTB Busy

These infractions, he adds, can “include on-premise and off-premise retailers. The preferred shelf space at an off-premise retailer may be the space near the check-out counter or the eye-level on the aisle shelves …. For an on-premise retailer, it could be the draft beer taphead, the well product or, again, some shelf or display space that traditionally captures the eye of the consumer who may then order that brand.”

One wine writer asks wine lovers to reflect on their standards

Let’s assume that you are dedicated to drinking wine. It’s your go-to, your default, your everlasting love. Wine is part of your life, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

With that assumption in mind, let’s consider a handful of questions to find out not how much you love drinking wine, but how “good” you are at it. And if simple concepts like “good” and “bad” are too aggressive, replace “How good are you?” with “How much do you care?”

Survey at 2018 Vinitaly shows booming trends in organic wine consumption

Italian consumers were developing a strong taste for organic wine, a research unveiled at the Vinitaly wine fair here in Verona showed.

In the first two months of 2018, sales of organic wine reached 21.6 million euros (26.6 million U.S. dollars) in terms of value in the country’s large retails chain only, according to the research.

The figure marked an 88 percent increase compared to the same period of 2017 (while non-organic wine sales overall grew by 3 percent in value).

The vocabulary of scent

Uniquely, our scent perception is filtered through the emotional centre of our brains, bypassing rational interpretation for the instinctual hub: the hypothalamus. Why don’t Americans drink wine with lunch?

Even when we dine in restaurants with kitchens that turn out carefully prepared, sophisticated food that begs for wine accompaniment, we don’t drink wine at lunch, for the most part. We say, “I’m fine with just water,” or we upgrade to sparkling water or some other nonalcoholic beverage. We do this partly because returning to the office with boozy breath is taboo in our work-worshipping culture.

Bacardi Targets Cognac, Whisky Drinkers With Premium Portfolio Revamp

Bacardi is looking to bring more consumers into the high-end rum category with a major revamp of its upscale range. The rum giant has added two new premium offerings—Bacardi Añejo Cuatro and Gran Reserva Diez—to the portfolio of its flagship brand. According to Bacardi, the move is expected to tap nascent trading-up trends within the U.S. rum category, which, thus far, has premiumized at a far slower pace than other spirits segments like Tequila and whisk(e)y.

“It’s no secret that rum has been on the decline for the past 10 years. But where we’re seeing growth is within the premium side of the category,” says Bacardi vice president Ned Duggan. “There’s massive opportunity, as rum is the final spirits category whose volume remains predominantly within the standard segment. Only 15% of the value of the rum category is at the premium-plus level.”

The newly launched Bacardi Añejo Cuatro and Gran Reserva Diez retail at $20 and $40 a 750-ml., respectively. They join Bacardi’s existing Gran Reserva Limitada ($100) and Reserva Ocho ($30) labels, with the latter also receiving a packaging update as part of the portfolio refresh. Reserva Ocho has a current U.S. volume of roughly 30,000 cases, while Gran Reserva Limitada sells between 500 to 1,000 cases annually. The revamped portfolio will be targeted toward existing spirits consumers in the 25- to 34-year-old age range, with a focus on metropolitan areas and people who already consume Cognac and whiskies.

Women, especially millennials, are driving wine trends

“We do know from our research that 60 percent of wine consumers are women, so of course, women are very important to the wine industry and for reasons beyond those percentages,” said Jennifer Jo Wiseman, vice president of E&J Gallo Winery. “One reason is because women frequently connect to one another and gathering around food with family and friends.”

What Is Natural Wine…and Why Should You Drink It?

Perhaps you heard the phrase “natural wine” ten years ago, and it referred to a wine bottled without sulfites. And then you tried said wine and experienced something so funky it was off-putting — or, worse yet, bad — because so-called sulfite-free wines, when made poorly, tend to turn quickly, since sulfur acts as a preservative. This is why, when sommeliers tell us they serve natural wines exclusively, they often feel compelled to immediately follow up with this defensive caveat: “But I’d never serve you bad wine.”

MARYSE CHEVRIERE ON ILLUSTRATING WINE TASTING NOTES

FORGET BEER, IRELAND IS ALSO WINE COUNTRY

European wine aficionados traditionally think of France, Italy or Spain when it comes to quality vino.

However, Ireland has had a wine culture that dates back 16 centuries.

Like many countries, the Irish involvement with wine started with monks. Monasteries needed wine for mass and monks made it. So in the 5th century a Cistercian monastery in County Kilkenny started a vineyard.

Ireland is now home to five vineyards in counties including Dublin, Waterford and Cork.

Jim Beam And Bud Partner

Jim Beam and Budweiser have collaborated on a new cross-merchandising campaign and limited-edition beer. Inspired by the “beer and a Bourbon shot,” occasion, the joint marketing push pairs the two brands together at on- and off-premise venues across the U.S., effective immediately. Additionally, Budweiser brewmasters and Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe are set to debut Budweiser Reserve Copper Lager this September. The limited release brew—made with two-row barley and aged on Jim Beam Bourbon barrel staves—will honor the 85th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition.

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER POUR YOUR OWN SAKE

Why buyers want super varietal wines 1st, country of origin 2nd

The world of wine is slowly being dominated by what could be referred to as the “Super Varietal”. Grape varieties that now sell the wine far more than the country, the region or even the producer where they are made. Driven by private label and exclusive wine ranges and a number of high profile wine brands that all make the grape variety the hero, it is changing the face of wine buying, particularly in a year when there is so less wine to buy.

Three Days Of Glory

Documentary

The hills of Burgundy are covered in legendary vineyards, pristinely manicured, tiny parcels rooted in the planet’s most exclusive soils. The wine growers are hardworking, humble vignerons who work in awe of the vines they farm.

But on April 27, 2016, a brutal frost devastated Burgundy. Some of the producers lost 90 percent or more of their crop before the year has even begun. Still, they press on with the stubborn courage forged by grit and generations of humility before the spiritual gift of the terroir, their soil and landscape, that produces the most stunning wines on the planet.

Wine Coolers Are Back And Here Are A Few Worth Trying

Wine coolers have come a long way since the 1980s. In those days, brands like Bartles & Jaymes and their cloyingly sweet “wines” reigned supreme. In the height of the John Hughes era, everyone drank these sugary drinks — which tasted more like soda than wine. They were cheaply made, low in alcohol, and high in sugar and extra additives. Not surprisingly, they usually led to a wicked hangover.

On Tasting Notes

There are few aspects of wine culture as reviled, ridiculed, and distrusted by the public as tasting notes. To many, they symbolize everything that is wrong about wine: the obscure and absurd nature of the language; the obsession with ludicrously trivial aspects; the sheer amount of fresh manure it seems to involve. Every single thing about it feels wrong.

Why do most wines require preservatives when beers don’t?

There are two key differences between beer and wine. Firstly, beer is usually pasteurised, while wine is not. And secondly, beer is packaged while it still contains the carbon dioxide produced during fermentation. Wine has lost most of its CO² by the time it’s bottled and needs a preservative, usually sulphur dioxide.

Guide To The Various Types of Wine Corks

A wide variety of types of wine corks and bottle stoppers exist to preserve wine. Some winemakers — especially those who mass produce value wines — are using metal twist off caps instead of corks. While cork type (or lack there of) in some ways affects wine flavor over time, as well as our perception of taste, it’s also critical in protecting wines as they age. Some corks are more reliable than others.

When you hear the phrase “green wine,” do you think of a herbaceous sauvignon blanc from New Zealand? Or does your mind conjure words like “sustainable,” “organic,” and “biodynamic,” which describe responsible growing practices?

WHERE IS BARBERA? THE ANSWER MIGHT SURPRISE YOU

f it weren’t for Prohibition and the disruption of the commercial wine trade in California, we’d probably be drinking Barbera today instead of “Napa Valley Cab”

A more nuanced approach to upgrading your wine palette

Going to a wine shop should expose you to someone with expertise who can ask you questions about what you’re drinking and suggest the next logical step. Logic doesn’t dictate going from $15 to $100. If you’re sold that bill of goods, leave and don’t return to that wine retailer.

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT NARRAGANSETT BEER

Narragansett Brewing is an American beer success story. The first ‘Gansett lager debuted in 1890, after which the Rhode Island-born brewery survived Prohibition, became the biggest lager maker in New England, and then, after complications following the 1965 sale of the brewery to Falstaff Brewing Corporation, shut down in the 1980s.

We Shouldn’t Sacrifice Creativity for Ideology

The production process as much as the climate and geology of the vineyard determines what ends up in the bottle. Everything You Need to Know About Orange Wine

Drink Better Wine!

U.S. restaurants are among the best in the world, specialty food shops are proliferating, and we have farmer’s markets in every town large enough to feature a traffic light.

But wander down the wine aisle of most supermarkets and you find nothing but the same old same old differing only in the flash of the marketing or the cuteness of the name on the label. It’s really depressing. Hundreds of Chardonnays and Cabs all tasting alike but nary a Austrian Gruner Veltliner or Blaufrankisch.
