9 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DON JULIO TEQUILA
At a time when tequila production meant quantity over quality, Don Julio dared to challenge the status quo: The company coddled its agave, bottled short when everyone else went tall, and even stripped its aged tequila down to crystal-clear agave bones.

Wines made for restaurants solve dilemma
On a fictitious wine list from a nonexistent restaurant you find 2014 Chateau Niedspondiavanci Chardonnay for $45.
You, a savvy, mobile phone-equipped diner, do an Internet search to find out about it: is it worth $45? Where is it from? But the only search-engine results for the brand has nothing about wine, only a reference to a terrible 1942 joke.
This tale illustrates one of the restaurant industry’s most difficult-to-solve problems: how to offer diners wines that don’t compete directly with discount wine shops, a list that could look (and may be) overpriced.

US consumers are drinking less
Wine sales volumes in the USA rose 1% in 2017 on the previous year. The bump is being attributed to the success of sparkling and canned products, and it defies a broader decline in total alcohol consumption of 0.7%, and shrinking consumer numbers, with only 62% of adults saying they drank alcohol in 2017, compared to 65% in 2016.

Premium-Plus Imported Wines Continue Fast Rise, Led By Italy, New Zealand
Though the U.S. market’s total imported wine segment was roughly flat at 67 million 9-liter case depletions last year, according to Impact Databank, the category is seeing significant gains at the premium level. The top 10 imported brands retailing at above $10 a 750-ml. shot ahead by an aggregate 16% last year to more than 9 million cases. Progress was primarily driven by premium-plus offerings from Italy—the leading import segment by value, whose shipments were worth $1.35 billion last year—as well as New Zealand.
Riboli Family Wine Estates’ Stella Rosa remains the largest player in the premium-plus segment, nearing 1.7 million cases on 28% growth last year. The brand, whose core portfolio includes Rosso, Moscato D’Asti, Peach, Pink, and Berry wines ($11-$12 a 750-ml.), now ranks among the U.S. market’s top five imported wine brands overall, and is the only top-five brand priced above $10.

How to sell more wine using Alice in Wonderland world of psychology
Why do some wines sell better than others? Why are people willing to pay more for one wine over another? The answer may lie not in the quality of the wine or how much a person even knows about it, it will most certainly rest in how well you are selling it.

What’s the maximum amount of alcohol a “table wine” can have?
The first thing to note is that wine sold in the U.S. has an alcohol percentage by volume listed. Look carefully—it’s usually in tiny print, or on the edge of the label, but it should be there. If it’s not, and the label reads “red table wine” or “white table wine,” that means the wine is between 7 and 13.9 percent alcohol by volume.

Why Israel Needs A New Map — For Wine
Israel’s current wine map — the one that’s being revised — designates five regions: Galilee, Samaria, Samson, Judean Hills, and Negev. These regional names, printed on the labels of Israeli wine imported to the United States, indicate geographic area — but they hardly describe regionality as it pertains to the characteristics of the wines being grown there. Drawn in the 1970s, the map reflects the traditional regions of Israel. Today, many of the country’s top wines come from single vineyards, and terroir — the properties in the soil that contribute to the wine’s unique character — Matters.

Promoting Wines I’ve Never Tasted ~ Yeah, Right
I was reading a story from a blogger that was requested to promote a wine he never tasted. (http://www.wine-blog.org/index.php/2017/06/14/promoting-wines-ive-never-tasted-yeah-right/ ) At Franklin Liquors if you see a tasting note that means we have tasted it! It is important to us to tell you the profile and story of each bottle we sell.

Beer, Wine or Liquor? Data Shows More People Are Turning to the Hard Stuff
The country drank 3.5 million fewer nine-liter cases of alcohol overall in 2016 than it did the year before, with total consumption down to about 3.39 billion cases last year, according to the annual IWSR US Beverage Alcohol Review. But the volume of wine and liquor bought both increased, especially for whisky, tequila and cognac.

‘Independence’ Matters to Beer Drinkers, Says New Survey
The terms “independent” and “independently-owned” are relatively straightforward in their meaning; however, the survey had an even more interesting finding: These terms also ranked second-highest among words drinkers said would be “more likely” to influence their purchases. Only “drinkable” ranked higher.

Why blending wine is one of the fastest growing trends in the industry
The wines, composed of three, four, five or more unidentified and often disparate red varieties, emblazoned with flashy names and at times lurid identity systems, represent one of the fastest-growing segments in the country.

YOUR FOOD PROBABLY HAS MORE SULFITES THAN YOUR WINE
Dried fruits, bottled lemon/lime juices, molasses, sauerkraut, and pickled onions all contain over 100 ppm of sulfites, with dried fruits potentially containing a whopping 2,000 ppm — that’s over five times an average non-organic bottle of wine!

Why Uruguay is one of the most exciting wine countries in South America
Uruguay is no doubt a small wine country. The human population is outnumbered four to one by cows and Uruguay produces less wine than Japan. Although it might be dwarfed by nearby wine countries Argentina and Chile in size and production, there are many reasons why Uruguay is one of the most exciting wine countries in South America.

Prosecco – We Love It – for now!
Prosecco has been enjoyed since Roman times, but only as a sparkling wine since the late 19th Century. Perhaps that is not surprising for a region that as a legal entity producing sparkling wine is less than a decade old

RIOJA DOCA APPROVES SINGLE VINEYARD CLASSIFICATION
The move is a culmination in a long-running battle over Spanish terroir between The Regulatory Council of the Designated Origin Denomination of Origin (DOCa) and more than 150 producers, who argued that the current appellation system was “oblivious to soil differentiation and levels of quality” and calling for “deep changes” to boost the countries heritage and prevent it valuing quantity over quality.

Why do some wines taste of mouse cage?

Wine is a numbers game
The average pour, or the amount of wine in a glass in a bar, is right around 5 ounces. If the bottle cost the bar, say, $20 wholesale, and they are charging you $10, a reasonable price for a premium pour (likely more at that bottle price), then they are grossing $50 on that bottle, or two and a half times more than they paid for it. The numbers start to add up.

Does high price guarantee great wine?
Perhaps the oldest myth about wine is: the higher the price, the better the bottle. But the converse notion — that there’s no relationship between price and quality — also is a myth.

Terroir Talk: Tasting the Earth in Your Wine
In wine jargon, terroir is a term that is trending amongst oenophiles and befuddling wine novices. Though the frilly French pronunciation (ter-wahr) may scare you off, it’s actually a useful term that will help you become a savvy wine drinker — and earn a few wine vocab points along the way.

New Gin By Tanqueray
Diageo is adding a limited-production Old Tom Gin to its Tanqueray brand this month, created by master distiller Tom Nichol. According to Diageo, the Old Tom style “bridges the flavor gap between the original, malty Dutch genevers and the more juniper-forward London Dry styles” and is lighter than a genever but more full-bodied and sweeter than a London Dry. Tanqueray’s Old Tom, which is limited to 100,000 bottles globally and will be distributed primarily in top bars, was inspired by a 19th century recipe from brand founder Charles Tanqueray. The pack design is also based on an original Tanqueray Old Tom label dating back to 1921. Each bottle is individually numbered. Tanqueray Old Tom Gin follows the brand’s revival of its Malacca edition in 2013.

The K-J Avant lineup, which has done particularly well among younger LDA consumers, has helped boost Kendall-Jackson above the 3-million-case mark in recent years.
