Exploring Tre Monti Wines

Host: Natalie D’Alessandro Volpe

From Emilia-Romagna Italy Tre Monti traces its origins back to the early 1960s with the inspiration of Sergio Navacchia and of his wife Thea, who for years was the real driving force behind the winery until her death in 1989.

The heart of the winery lies in the center of the farm estate in Imola, where only estate-grown grapes are vinified. All of the vineyards are managed according to the principles of sustainable viticulture, which mandate inter-row cover-cropping and the lowest possible use of unnatural products.

All of this so that the final wine is the perfect expression of everything around its environment. Tre Monti became certified organic in 2014.

About Natalie:

Natalie D’Alessandro Volpe is a Wine Broker  of fine Italian wines for NDV Wine Agents, LLC.

Natalie currently represents a portfolio of exceptional wine varietals from regions throughout Italy, including Emilia Romagna, Piedmont, Tuscany, Lombardy, Veneto and Puglia.  She works primarily with small family owned vineyards that practice sustainable and organic farming, and enjoys introducing her clients to grapes that are obscure and or indigenous to the region.  In addition to her wine brokerage, Natalie is certified as an Italian Wine Specialist through the North American Sommelier Association, and conducts staff training, wine dinners and educational talks and seminars.

A Tech Sheet Manifesto

A tech sheet, if not familiar, is a single page document about a specific wine usually written by the winery or in some cases the importer or distributor. Exploring Wines Of Joseph Carr And Josh

Host Adam Cataldo

Please join us for an immersive tasting experience as we weave through the story of Joseph Carr.

We will talk about how Joe discovered his passion for wine; what led him to starting his namesake label from the Napa Valley; and how the wine he made to honor his father, Josh, became one of America’s most beloved Cabernets.

You’ll have the opportunity to taste and discover how the Josh Cellars varietals compare with their Joseph Carr counterparts

Adams Bio

Adam Cataldo is a recovering history major, IT guy, and bartender who has spent the last 8 years in the wine and spirits industry. He can often be found spreading the good word of Josh Cellars throughout South Eastern Massachusetts as its District Manager for Deutsch Family Wine and Spirits, at least when he’s not complaining about the Boston Bruins.

Horizontal and vertical

Wine lovers are used to thinking about horizontal and vertical, especially when it comes to tasting.  A horizontal tasting enables a range of wines from the same year to be compared: the emphasis is on the difference between wines.  A vertical tasting looks at just one wine through a range of different years, emphasizing the difference in vintages.  That’s a useful distinction.

Do Italian wines shipped to the U.S. contain more sulfides than the bottles sold in Italy?

I think you mean sulfites, not sulfides, but I thought I’d use this opportunity to remind you and others of the difference between the two. Sulfides are volatile sulfur compounds and, while harmless, are typically considered a flaw because of the stinky, skunky or rotten egg–like aromas they can contribute to wine. Sulfites are a naturally occurring byproduct of wine, and sometimes winemakers choose to add additional sulfites to prevent a wine from spoiling.

Wines sold in the United States have the “contains sulfites” note on wine labels, but wines sold in Italy do not, simply because labeling laws differ from country to country. So the same wine—with the same amount of sulfites—will or won’t carry that warning, depending on where it is sold. Italian wines imported to the U.S. have to have this “contains sulfites” wording on their labels before being sold here.

For most of us, sulfites aren’t a problem, and are part of many things we consume, like dried apricots, molasses and blue cheese. But for the approximately 1 percent of people that have sulfite allergies, wine can be a concern, and cause some scary reactions, from wheezing and asthma-like attacks to digestive issues and difficulty swallowing.

The overall Smirnoff brand, however, was down 1.8% to 9.2 million cases for 2017.

Craft Beer News

Craft beer production increased by 5% in the first half of 2018, according to the Brewers Association, matching its growth rate for calendar 2017. While craft beer continues to expand in the U.S.—and is aggregating share within the overall beer category—the pace has slowed markedly over the past few years, and the market has grown increasingly crowded. The Brewers Association notes that there were more 6,655 active breweries in the U.S. as of June 30, up 20% from a year ago. In addition, there are an estimated 2,500-3,000 breweries in the planning stages. “The data demonstrate that 2018 is on pace to have the highest number of brewery openings and closings to date,” said Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson. “However, even as breweries close, openings continue to far outpace the number that shutter.”

The Most Important Step in Winemaking That Nobody Talks About

Why is bottling so important?

Hard Seltzer Regulatory Considerations

Why are Rosé Bottles Crazy with Shapes and Packaging?

Disappointed as I was in my fellow wine drinkers, this meant I had to face facts: these attention-seeking methods of marketing serve a purpose. Heavy bottles, particularly those with champagne-like shapes, deep punts and long thin necks, denote prestige – you’re splashing out and you’re not afraid to take rosé seriously.

Exploring Michele Chiarlo Wines

Host: Adam Verona

Since 1956 Michele Chiarlo is synonym with the wines of Piemonte. At a very young age Michele started to travel to showcase with unlimited passion what Piemonte could produce. With Michele’s guidance now his sons Stefano and Alberto have taken over different roles and are carrying on their father’s passion. The story of Michele Chiarlo as a wine producer starts with Barbera and specifically from Asti but quickly moves to cover all the top areas of Piemonte, Gavi, Barolo, Barbaresco and more.

The philosophy at the winery is to produce classic wines of terroir with the most up to date know how and still vivid passion.

Adams Bio

As Michele Chiarlo’s North American Brand Ambassador, Adam makes regular trips to Piedmont, Italy and works closely with Michele’s sons Alberto (sales and marketing) and Stefano (winemaking and technical aspects).

Adam has had a passion for wine and food for as long as he can remember. He began his wine studies in his early twenties that included an internship on a Tuscan vineyard, gaining hands on experience in every phase of wine production.

After years of representing Chiarlo wines in wholesale, he was introduced to the Michele Chiarlo family. In 2016 he took the position with the winery and now travels the United States and Canada, proudly promoting the Chiarlo family wines. Adam lives in Charleston, South Carolina with his wife and son.
