Exploring Klinker Brick Winery

Host: Julie Handle

Great wine begins with a suitable climate and soil, both of which are found in Lodi.  Sandy Loam soil coupled with the hot, cold exchange that graces Lodi from day to night creates a utopic environment to cultivate warm-weather varietals including Zinfandel, Cabernet and Syrah.

The Felten Family own and manage fifteen individual vineyard blocks of “Old Vine” Zinfandel that range in age from 40 to 120 years old.

The Feltens and Klinker Brick have one goal…produce world-class wine.

About Julie

Julie Handel, a native of Lodi, California found her love of all things food and wine while in college, catering events in California’s wine country. After college, she worked in distributor wine sales in San Francisco before moving to Boston to continue what is now 20 years in the wine industry, directing the sales and distribution of such brands as Kendall-Jackson Estates, Robert Mondavi Winery, Ruffino Tuscan Estates, Kim Crawford and The Prisoner Wine Company throughout the Northeast. Her passion is both learning and teaching others about wine. As such, she began a 5 year certification process with the London based Wine & Spirts Education Trust, the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education. Julie currently holds her Advanced Certification and is in her final exams for her Level 4, WSET Diploma. She recently headed back to her roots and love for Lodi wine country and is currently the Northeast Regional Sales Director for Klinker Brick Winery. She resides in the South Shore of Massachusetts with her 8 year old twins.

Exploring Tre Monti Wines

Host: Natalie D’Alessandro Volpe

From Emilia-Romagna Italy Tre Monti traces its origins back to the early 1960s with the inspiration of Sergio Navacchia and of his wife Thea, who for years was the real driving force behind the winery until her death in 1989.

The heart of the winery lies in the center of the farm estate in Imola, where only estate-grown grapes are vinified. All of the vineyards are managed according to the principles of sustainable viticulture, which mandate inter-row cover-cropping and the lowest possible use of unnatural products.

All of this so that the final wine is the perfect expression of everything around its environment. Tre Monti became certified organic in 2014.

About Natalie:

Natalie D’Alessandro Volpe is a Wine Broker  of fine Italian wines for NDV Wine Agents, LLC.

Natalie currently represents a portfolio of exceptional wine varietals from regions throughout Italy, including Emilia Romagna, Piedmont, Tuscany, Lombardy, Veneto and Puglia.  She works primarily with small family owned vineyards that practice sustainable and organic farming, and enjoys introducing her clients to grapes that are obscure and or indigenous to the region.  In addition to her wine brokerage, Natalie is certified as an Italian Wine Specialist through the North American Sommelier Association, and conducts staff training, wine dinners and educational talks and seminars.

Exploring Wines Of Joseph Carr And Josh

Host Adam Cataldo

Please join us for an immersive tasting experience as we weave through the story of Joseph Carr.

Since 1956 Michele Chiarlo is synonym with the wines of Piemonte. At a very young age Michele started to travel to showcase with unlimited passion what Piemonte could produce. With Michele’s guidance now his sons Stefano and Alberto have taken over different roles and are carrying on their father’s passion. The story of Michele Chiarlo as a wine producer starts with Barbera and specifically from Asti but quickly moves to cover all the top areas of Piemonte, Gavi, Barolo, Barbaresco and more.

The philosophy at the winery is to produce classic wines of terroir with the most up to date know how and still vivid passion.

Adams Bio

As Michele Chiarlo’s North American Brand Ambassador, Adam makes regular trips to Piedmont, Italy and works closely with Michele’s sons Alberto (sales and marketing) and Stefano (winemaking and technical aspects).

Adam has had a passion for wine and food for as long as he can remember. He began his wine studies in his early twenties that included an internship on a Tuscan vineyard, gaining hands on experience in every phase of wine production.

After years of representing Chiarlo wines in wholesale, he was introduced to the Michele Chiarlo family. In 2016 he took the position with the winery and now travels the United States and Canada, proudly promoting the Chiarlo family wines. Adam lives in Charleston, South Carolina with his wife and son.

Exploring Poderi Gianni Gagliardo Wines

Host: Vito Candela

Franklin Wine Club Event Held in the Franklin Liquors wine room.

The Gagliardo family has been deeply rooted in the history of cultivating grapes and producing wines in Piemonte, one of the most prestigious wine regions, since 1848. The Gagliardo ancestors, the Colla family, initially began producing Moscato from Santo Stefano Belbo. Then the next generation of the family moved to Diano d’Alba producing Dolcetto, and finally Paolo Colla bought a small farm and vineyard in La Morra in the Barolo region and started producing Barolo wine with the care and attention that only a great passion and respect for the land can provide.

We will explore:

Favorita, Barbera, Dolcetto, Barolo and Brachetto

Vito Bio:

Born in 1960 and brought up in Bari, Puglia.

Vito Candela came the first time to the USA in 1982 to study Business Administration at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.

In 1990 while on vacation in Cartagena, Colombia he decided to move there and start his own import business in the food and wine industry in which he had worked in while going to school in the states.

Some of the top Italian producers where part of his company’s portfolio which became shortly one of the largest in South America.

While in Bogotá on a business trip he met his wife Claudia with whom he has two children Vincenzo and Maria Josè.

In 1998 after an interesting experience with the Colombian guerrilla, he moved his family to the United States where a Tuscan winery offered him the positions of North America Export Director.

Intrigued by the challenge he accepted the position.

In 2005 he was promoted to Vice President North America.

In July 2013 he joined a large Italian Wine Group as VP North Americas until September 2017 when he decided to start his own company and to work with Top family owned wineries like Poderi Gianni Gagliardo in Barolo and Barbera.

Among his hobbies, racing Ducati Superbikes, working out, fishing and of course tasting great wines from all over the world.

Guest Host: Timothy Chagnon C.S.

19 Crimes, one of the fastest growing brands within the Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) portfolio, has been named ‘Wine Brand of the Year’ by leading US wine industry title Market Watch, demonstrating the outstanding success of this innovation since it was introduced to the US market in 2012.

Growing to one million cases in annual volume over the last 12 months, 19 Crimes is a unique wine proposition that celebrates the rebellious spirit of men and women exiled from 18th and 19th century Britain to Australia, having committed one of the 19 Crimes meriting punishment via transportation*.

We tasted all 7 wines made!

Also A Leader In New Augmented Reality Technology

Available now via the Apple App and Google Play stores, this first-of-its-kind app will animate 19 Crimes’ criminals-turned-colonists. Hovering a mobile device over the bottles will bring the character on the label to life, sharing their stories of rule breaking that sent them across the ocean to Australia.

Dutton Goldfield And Ports

An Education And Tasting

CLUB

Thursday October  19th 2017

Dutton-Goldfield Winery began with a handshake in a vineyard in 1998, when longtime colleagues and friends Steve Dutton and Dan Goldfield recognized a shared vision between them—to craft wines that express the personalities of their cool-climate vineyards, and which they’d enjoy drinking at their own dinner tables. A fifth-generation farmer, Steve grew up with a love of driving tractors, and without any doubt about his future career. His father, Warren Dutton, had begun growing grapes in the western reaches of Russian River Valley in the mid-1960s, at a time when most people thought the area was too cool to grow fruit for quality still wine. After graduating from Boston’s Brandeis University, Dan headed west to begin a career in research chemistry, with a few detours for skiing and hiking along the way. Always an outdoor enthusiast and adventurer, the life of lab work was quickly replaced with a dream of winemaking when his brother turned him on to the 1969 Burgundies.

At Dutton-Goldfield, we believe we draw from the best Dutton vineyards to craft these very special Estate Grown wines. The Dutton’s are the premier grape growers in the region and sell grapes to many top wine producers including Patz & Hall, Lewis, Kistler, Nickel and Nickel, Mary Edwards, DuMOL, Ramey and Ironhorse just to name a few.

We will explore 4 very limited wines from Dutton Goldfield.

How limited are they? Two have only 350 cases made and two have only 150 6 packs made of which there are only 7 cases in MA!

A Tale of Two Ports

For more than 250 years, Ferreira has been synonymous with high-quality Portuguese wine, and known around the world as “the Portuguese brand.” Ferreira was founded in 1751, and under the direction of Dona Antónia Adelaide became the reference point for exceptional ports and Douro wines. Today, Ferreira continues to be a global market leader, and the symbol of a country and a culture.

Showing: Ferreira Dona Antonia Tawny Port

Quinta do Crasto, which traces its roots back to the 17th century, was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, a partner in the Port house of Constantino, in 1910. ln 1981, Constantino de Almeida’s granddaughter Leonor (“Tita”) and her husband Jorge Roquette took over the Quinta, determined to restore and revitalize the family estate. Following the change in Portuguese law (allowing single quintas to bottle and export wine), Crasto has been producing and exporting table and port wines since 1994. The perseverance and commitment of the Roquette family has restored Quinta do Crasto to its rightful status as one of the great family estates of the Douro.

Johns Bio:

A native of Iowa, John came to California to pursue a career in the wine business beginning as a cellar worker for a large central valley winery. He later went into the sales and distribution side of the business working for a central coast wine distributor. John then moved to Napa Valley and spent many years at Franciscan winery selling a number of brands under this portfolio. John has been in the role as National Sales Director at Dutton Goldfield for the past seven years.

Samantha Bio:

Samantha Straw is a Fine Wine Portfolio Manager for Ruby Wines who has been in the food and beverage industry for over 20 years. She has a passion for knowledge and has achieved 2 levels of Sommelier certification from the International Sommelier Guild, the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) designation from the Society of Wine Educators, and the Sake Adviser Certification from the Sake School of America. When not at work, she spends her time with her husband and two children.

Exploring Chateau Ste Michelle Winery

Guest Host: John Gedgaudas

Chateau Ste. Michelle is celebrating 50 years of wine making in 2017!

As one of the founding winery’s in WA State they are the premier winery from WA State and have helped define the Northwest wine industry with classic vinefera wines that stand out today as they did 50 years ago.  With a long history of accolades they produce wines that you will enjoy today and with great aging potential.  We will focus on some of their single vineyard wines and their reserve Indian Wells tier.

Helping us taste through these wines is John Gedgaudas, a Business Development Manager for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.  John has been selling and representing wine for over 10 years and is excited to present them.  Focusing on WA State will be fun as it is an area of consistent weather conditions that provide great quality grapes  vintage after vintage.  Maybe WA State will become your new favorite wine region.
