Are all scores from year to year weighted the same? Is a score of 93 in a bad vintage year the same as a 93 in an exceptional year?

Our wine ratings are not weighted by vintage. When our tasters sit down to a blind tasting, they are informed of the grape variety and/or region of the wine as well as the vintage. Even though we believe wines should reflect the vintage they hail from, the scores do not change in good vintages or bad ones. In the scenario you describe, a 93-point wine is a 93-point wine, regardless of the overall quality of the vintage.

In exceptional vintages, you should expect more 90+ wines than in weaker vintages. We take this data into account when we are assessing our vintage ratings.

Constellation Unveils New Brand, To Kalon Vineyard Company

Constellation Brands is launching a new high-end Napa Valley wine label, To Kalon Vineyard Company. The new brand takes its name from the legendary To Kalon vineyard in Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA.

Partnering with winemaker Andy Erickson, Constellation’s first offering under the luxury brand will be a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon called Highest Beauty, a translation of the Greek phrase “To Kalon.” Retailing at $200 a 750-ml., Highest Beauty will debut in September through the brand’s mailing list. 500 cases were made for the inaugural 2016 vintage.

The launch comes amid ongoing legal wrangling over the To Kalon trademark. In March, The Vineyard House, a winery owned by Jeremy Nickel, son of the late Far Niente proprietor Gil Nickel, filed suit against Constellation, claiming that the company’s Robert Mondavi Corp. subsidiary fraudulently obtained the trademark of To Kalon and that Constellation has marketed it deceptively. Constellation says the allegations are without merit.

Bushmills In Expansion Mode

Bushmills is set to double its whiskey output with a second distillery, slated to open by 2022. Already the largest and oldest whiskey maker in Northern Ireland, Bushmills got the green light for the expansion as part of a $77 million investment plan by Mexico-based parent company Becle S.A.B. de C.V., also known as Cuervo. When it opens, Bushmills’ new single malt distillery will match the capacity of its current facility. Although the company won’t say what that capacity is, it’s estimated to be around 6 million liters of pure alcohol annually.

Just holding a beer makes women appear less human, study finds

Is there a polite way to tell a winemaker that I’m not enjoying their wines?

I’ve been in plenty of situations where a winemaker is asking me what I think of a wine and I’m uncomfortable answering. My most effective deflection is to tell them I’d rather hear them talk about their wines and hear their insight. What makes the wine special in their eyes? How do they see their winemaking decisions or vintage characteristics reflected in the glass?

If it’s more of a scenario where you feel like they’re asking you to buy their wines (and you don’t want to), I think a simple, “I really need to think about it/check my cellar space” is a fine response. If they keep pressing, avoid saying anything negative. Instead, tell them which wine in the lineup is most distinctive or most appealing. Or segue into a conversation about how these wines are different from the regions and grapes you are more familiar with or keen on.
