Robert Mondavi Private Selection Debuts Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet
Constellation Brands has released a category-crossing new wine offering, a Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon aged in Bourbon Barrels. The limited-release Cabernet is launching nationally in a run of 35,000 cases, and it retails at $13.99 a 750-ml. Sourced from coastal Monterey County vineyards, a portion of the wine’s blend is aged for three months in a combination of new and used Kentucky Bourbon barrels. With this innovation, Constellation will look to generate some renewed momentum for the Robert Mondavi Private Selection brand, which hovered around the 1.8-million-case mark in the U.S. for several years before declining 7% to 1.7 million cases in 2015, according to Impact Databank.

U.S. Wine Exports Reach Record $1.6 Billion In 2015
U.S. wine exports—90% of which hail from California—rose 7.6% by value last year to achieve a record high of $1.61 billion, according to the Wine Institute. Export volumes were also up, growing 4.1% to 51.2 million cases on the year prior. The European Union remained the largest export market for California wines, accounting for $622 million in revenue, followed by Canada ($461 million), Hong Kong ($97 million), Japan ($96 million) and China ($56 million). California wine exports have increased 91% by value over the past decade, driven by global premiumization trends.

Join Betsy Barry of Franklin Yoga & Wellness and Mark Lenzi of Franklin Liquors for a sensory exploration of wine through the energy systems of the body.
This unique workshop combines a 6o-minute yoga class with a carefully sequenced wine pairing designed to open and balance the major energy centers, known as “chakras.” With a heightened sense of awareness, we will explore each chakra through physical observation of each shared wine, discovering taste, flavor and feel in a new way.

Wine Spectator Debuts Xvalues, A Free Mobile App For Wine Novices
Wine Spectator has unveiled a new mobile app, Xvalues, intended to welcome newcomers into the world of wine. A convenient, easy-to-use wine app for iPhone and iPad, Xvalues—named for its curated selection of “extreme values”—is available now as a free download on the iTunes App Store.
“Our goal is to make Xvalues the go-to app for wine consumers of varying ages and levels of wine expertise,” said Jessica Shanken, vice president of business development at M. Shanken Communications, which publishes Wine Spectator. “In general, millennials are new to wine. While shopping, there are many aisles with thousands of wines to choose from at all different price points. This app helps them avoid overpaying for a bottle or choosing a wine that isn’t good quality. It’s like buying insurance using Wine Spectator ratings.”
The Xvalues app includes in its library a regularly updated selection of Wine Spectator’s latest highly-rated, widely available bottles. It features five categories of wines: extreme values (all $12 and under); reds (all $20 and under); whites (all $20 and under); sparklers (all $40 and under); and a rotating fifth category that is tailored to upcoming holidays and seasons of the year.
Each Xvalues entry includes the bottle’s name, producer, price, region, year, tasting notes and score on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale. The app also offers helpful tools like photos of wine labels, keywords to sort and simplify the library and a customizable favorites list.
Xvalues joins the popular WineRatings+ in Wine Spectator’s family of mobile apps. WineRatings+, which was updated for iOS9 in December, is consistently among the top-grossing food and drink apps in Apple’s iTunes App Store.

Narragansett Beer is launching I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale, the fourth offering in its Lovecraft Series. New Woodford Reserve
Brown-Forman has introduced a new Woodford Reserve special edition under the brand’s Distillery Series. The new offering, Frosty Four Wood, is a mature Woodford Reserve Bourbon aged in American oak and finished in Maple, Sherry and Port barrels. Woodford’s original Four Wood whiskey, a 2012 Master’s Collection release, was exposed to record-low temperatures during the 2013 Polar Vortex, resulting in flocking, or mineral precipitation, Brown-Forman said. Subsequent filtration from those stocks produced Frosty Four Wood (90.4 proof), a more fruit-forward whiskey with maple hints. Retailing at $50 a 375-ml., Frosty Four Wood is debuting only at the Woodford distillery and with Kentucky retailers.

Question to Legalize Marijuana Advances In MA
The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol took another step forward by gathering almost 71,000 signatures. The Secretary of State’s office verified that only 64,000 signatures were necessary. This question was one of seven ballot initiatives that received enough signatures to move on to the next phase. A second recreational marijuana question filed by Baystate Repeal, did not gather enough signatures to move forward.
What happens next? The Massachusetts Legislature has until May 3, 2016 to act on this question. If our Legislators enact a bill by May 3rd the question will no longer appear on the November ballot. If they choose not to enact a bill, the Campaign will have until July to gather an additional 10,000 signatures.

Gallo To Acquire The Ranch Winery, Tripling Its Production Capacity In The Napa Valley
E.&J. Gallo Winery has agreed to acquire The Ranch Winery, a custom crush winery in St. Helena, California, located between Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. The facility spans more than 70 acres and has a grape crush capacity of 30,000 tons. It also has 4.6 million cases of bottling capacity and 8 million gallons of storage space.
The Ranch is one of the biggest facilities of its kind in the Napa Valley. With land-use laws making it virtually impossible to build new wineries in Napa, this deal represents a major coup for Gallo.
“This is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Roger Nabedian, senior vice president and general manager of E.&J. Gallo’s premium wine division. “To have a property in the Napa Valley with 30,000 tons of crushing capacity come on the market is extremely rare.”
Gallo’s existing Napa Valley wineries, Louis M. Martini and William Hill, have a combined capacity of 15,000 tons. This deal now brings Gallo’s total Napa presence to 45,000 tons. “With this acquisition, our capacity in Napa will now triple,” Nabedian noted.
The Ranch was originally a Trinchero winery used largely for production of White Zinfandel during the 1980s. The facility was acquired by an investor group led by Napa winemaker Joel Gott in 2007, and it has since been used as a custom crush facility for boutique winemakers, including Gott himself, who’s been both a stakeholder and client.
Gallo will honor all existing production contracts at The Ranch. The facility will continue to serve as a custom crush facility in addition to handling some Gallo capacity, but it’s clear that the longer term objective is to utilize The Ranch for Gallo’s own expansion plans in Napa, which will occur through organic growth and possible future acquisitions.
With this deal, Gallo will now own 15 wineries throughout California and Washington.

Classic Imports, a subsidiary of Massachusetts-based distributor Martignetti Companies, is set to add the brands of Maine Distilleries to its portfolio. The 10-year deal will see Classic Imports distribute the distiller’s Cold River Vodka, Blueberry Vodka and Gin, which are created from potatoes grown at Green Thumb Farms in Fryeburg, Maine and triple-distilled in a copper pot still. The Maine Distilleries lineup will be available nationally, with the Cold River vodkas retailing at $34.99 and Cold River Gin at $27.99.
