America Without Tiers: Changing Wine Distribution

Liquor license caps called a “vestige of Puritan New England”
In general, state statute limits the number of liquor and wine and beer licenses for each city and town based on its population. The Legislature routinely makes exceptions to that law, granting additional licenses to municipalities on an individual basis through a local petition.
“It appears that with growing frequency the exceptions are overtaking the rule,” Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr of Gloucester told his colleagues on the floor. He said, “It seems that there is rarely a week that passes that we do not either in formal or informal session grant a municipality an additional liquor license, and usually Mr. President it is more than one.”

Wines From Dry to Sweet
We charted the sweetness in wine from bone-dry to richly sweet. Sweetness (and how we discuss it) is one of the most commonly misunderstood topics in wine, but with a little clarification you can taste and talk like a pro.

Why Green Certify? Marketing Versus Sustainability
But does anyone care besides the wineries themselves? If, according to the 2015 Survey of American Wine Consumer Preferences, conducted by Sonoma State University and the Wine Business Institute, only 18 percent of the respondents indicated that organic, sustainable, or biodynamic wines influence their decision to purchase a wine, why get certified in the first place?

La Cantina Winery Tasting

Very proud to host Bob and Ana Vozzella for this event!
They are members of our club and own and operate a winery in Franklin.
At this event Bob will share his families passion for wine making.
Come hear all about this winery and taste his families wines.
http://www.lacantinawinery.com
The Story:
The history of winemaking in our family starts in Santa Maria Del Molise, Italy, in the mid -1900’s. Santa Maria is a small farming community, with natural spring from the mountains and rich soil for vineyards. It was there my grandparents began a life-long tradition of making fine wines.
In 1963 my grandfather, Ottavio, moved his family from Italy to Franklin, MA, where he carried on the winemaking tradition from a small hand-dug cellar, in our home.
Today, in that very same home, I have been creating delicious wines using the same traditional methods my grandfather taught me. With my grandfathers knowledge passed down, and the education I received at UC Davis California, the “Harvard” of winemaking, I am proud to bring to you, La Cantina Wine School.
La Cantina Winery was born out of our love of traditional Italian winemaking with friends and family. Since its inception La Cantina Winery has become the premiere location for learning the process of winemaking. From grapes, to barrel, and bottle, you are involved in the educational and fun process of making wine.

Sam Adams To Make A Seltzer
Boston Beer Company is entering the nascent “hard seltzer” category with the launch of a new brand, Truly Spiked & Sparkling. Billed as a low-calorie, low-carb, gluten-free alternative to wine, light beer and cocktails, Truly Spiked & Sparkling is 5% abv—containing alcohol made from cane sugar—and is rolling out across 20 major markets in three flavors: Colima Lime, Grapefruit & Pomelo and Pomegranate. The newcomer, which retails at $10-$11 a six-pack, has 100 calories and two grams of carbs per serving. Truly Spiked & Sparkling will compete against other hard seltzer brands like Spiked Seltzer and Nauti Seltzer.

ON SCORES AND TASTING NOTES
Scores matter (please let nobody argue again that they don’t) but they are merely a peg in the ground, the accompanying tasting note doing the job of positioning the wine in stylistic context or relative to past vintages and perhaps alluding to its evolutionary potential.

Pyrazines: Why Some Wines Taste like Bell Pepper
A group of these savory flavors (which includes “bell pepper”) come from a from a specific aroma compound called methoxypyrazine (often called “pyrazines” for short). The compound is found in higher proportions in the “Bordeaux-family” grapes

About The Moonlight Chef:
I found my love for cooking at a very young age. While watching my mother and grandmother cook and entertain, I realized that the kitchen, with all its wonders, was where I belonged.
I bring my passion and love for food to your table. The idea that good food can be simple, elegant, fun, exciting, comforting, and delicious. Cooking is a lifelong love. It is an extension of my personality, family traditions, and nurturing nature.
I look forward to sharing my journey through food with you and yours.

Why a good wine shop matters
Feedback from recent article by Eric Asimov of the New York Times
If you care about wine and want to drink better and more confidently, the best thing you can do is cultivate a close relationship with a good wine shop.
Good wine shops offer a great assortment of distinctive bottles.
Look at wine descriptions posted under bottles. Are they written by the store’s staff? That’s a positive sign, indicating personal investment and a distinct point of view.
Bargain crates near the door? They often contain less interesting mass-market wines that are rarely good values.
In-store tastings are welcome, but you should never feel obliged to buy.
Good shops understand that the best values are around $15 to $25, so they ought to have a lot of good selections in that range. They should have cheaper wines, too, though without pandering. Pinot noirs for $5 may make sense in the supermarket environment of Trader Joe’s, where the strategy is to sell dull wine cheap, like Two-Buck Chuck, but not in a good wine shop.
The best merchants can teach you about wine, but they understand that a little information is often enough.

Are additives always a bad thing?
It’s the secret wine makers almost universally decline to admit: More additives are used in wine around the world today than ever before.
Gum arabic, sometimes called guar gum, is a byproduct of Acacia trees and helps to deal with unpleasant tannins in otherwise rough and rugged red wines. It is also widely used in the production of many foods.

Gallo Wines Hopes We Understand
Gallo, Constellation Claim Nearly Half Of Domestic Wine’s “Hot Brands”
U.S. wine market. Indeed, the two companies comprise more than 35% of the market’s volume, according to Impact Databank.
At more than 18 million nine-liter cases, Gallo’s Barefoot Cellars is easily the largest player on this year’s Hot Brands list. Barefoot’s sustained success is driven in part by its accessible pricing and approachable image. “(Barefoot Cellars) continues to resonate with consumers who share our belief that wine should be fun, less serious and always varietal-correct,” says Stephanie Gallo, vice president of marketing for E.&J. Gallo Winery
BUT HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED?????
On the back label of Gallo products is a 4-5-digit code.

I was told 2 things: One it’s a color code for the label OR it’s a code for color of the wine. So I wrote Gallo and got this response:
“Due to strict company policy this is considered proprietary information. We hope you understand.
”
SO if you had a color code on your wine no big deal right? To me it’s a chemical code to make wines a certain color. Something to think about.
