Boston Beer Extends Rebel Range, Adds Sparkling Ale

Boston Beer Company’s Samuel Adams brand has extended its fast-growing Rebel IPA range with the launch of Rebel Raw Double IPA. Rolling out over the next few weeks, Rebel Raw Double IPA (10% abv) is brewed with six different hop varieties and has a 35-day shelf life. The limited-edition expression will be available in 16-ounce can four-packs across Boston, New York City, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Chicago. According to Impact Databank, the Rebel lineup—which also includes the Rebel IPA, Rebel Rouser IPA, Rebel Rider IPA and Rebel Grapefruit IPA entries—sold 2 million (2.25-gallon) cases in 2014, the brand’s first year on the market.

Meanwhile, Samuel Adams has also debuted a new Sparkling Ale, brewed with a variety of Noble hops and an acidulated malt. The 4.8%-abv offshoot will be sold through December as part of the Samuel Adams Winter Classics Variety 12-Pack ($14.99-$17.99).

Peak Organic Seasonal

Portland, Maine’s Peak Organic Brewing Company is rolling out its Winter Session IPA, a dry-hopped dark wheat ale blended with Citra hops. The company sourced its wheat from local farms and used organic hops in the brewing process. Winter Session Ale will be available nationwide on draft and in package format through January 15. Illinois-based Small Town Brewery is following up on its fast-growing Not Your Father’s Root Beer brand with a national launch of Not Your Father’s Ginger Ale, a 5.9% abv ginger ale. The new entry is a “gruit-inspired botanical beer brewed with ginger,” according to Small Town, which is rolling the product out to about 40 states next week through distributor Pabst Brewing, with nationwide coverage expected by February. Gruit (German for “herbs”) beers are bittered and flavored with roots, spices, flowers and berries rather than hops. Screaming Eagle Producer Bolsters The Hilt, Its Santa Barbara Label

The Hilt, sister winery to Jonata in Santa Barbara County, plans to launch new Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines under the Santa Rita Hills appellation. The first release will be the 2014 vintage, shipping in 2016 and 2017. Armand de Maigret, estate manager for The Hilt and Jonata as well as Screaming Eagle in the Napa Valley, expects the wines to retail at around $45. The Hilt produced about 2,500 cases last year, and this new appellation should add a further 1,000-2,000 cases annually. The Hilt is known for its Vanguard and Old Guard Labels.

Commenting on Santa Barbara’s 2015 harvest, de Maigret said the vineyards suffered a water-deprived campaign that resulted in “very small berries, but very good skins.” He estimates Jonata’s yields this season at about 1.7 tons an acre, down nearly 20% from the 2.1-ton average of previous years.

At Screaming Eagle, about 17% of the crop was lost due to drought, as well as high winds in late May, de Maigret said. But quality was excellent, leaving the estate poised for another great vintage. Harvesting came between August 18 and September 12, mostly missing the intense period of heat around Labor Day. “Screaming Eagle has been phenomenal for the past three vintages, and 2015 will be in that zone of excellence,” de Maigret added. The 2015 vintage, which will ship in spring 2018, will likely fall below Screaming Eagle’s peak of 900 cases in the 2012 vintage.

AB InBev, SABMiller Reach “Agreement In Principle” On $106 Billion Deal

After years of pursuit, top global brewer AB InBev appears to have finally corraled top rival SABMiller. The two brewing giants issued a joint statement this morning that they have reached an “agreement in principle” on key terms of a deal that would see AB InBev pay £44 ($67) a share, or about $106 billion, to acquire SABMiller, representing a 50% premium to the latter’s share price on September 14, the day before renewed speculation erupted about a potential merger. The proposed deal would create a global brewing colossus with a market share as high as 35%, according to Impact Databank.

SABMiller’s largest shareholder, Altria Group, which owns a 27% stake, hailed the agreement, and SABMiller’s board—which rejected three previous offers—is expected to recommend it to shareholders. Under U.K. takeover rules, the two parties have until October 28 to iron out final terms, and AB InBev has agreed to pay $3 billion if the deal falls through.

While the long-awaited AB InBev-SABMiller tie-up has major global implications, the world’s two largest beer markets—China and the U.S.—may see little change. In the U.S., due to AB InBev already holding a nearly 50% market share, regulators will likely require SABMiller to relinquish its 58% stake in MillerCoors, its joint venture with Molson Coors that has a market share of around 25%. In China, SABMiller owns a 49% stake in top brewer CR Snow, and AB InBev is the third-leading player.

Meanwhile, U.S. regulators have fixed their gaze on AB InBev in a separate matter. The U.S. Justice Department and California attorney general are questioning whether AB’s pending purchases of wholesalers in Oakland and San Jose could potentially bottle up distribution of several craft beer brands handled by those operations. AB currently owns 17 of the 500 distributors that handle its products in the U.S., the Wall Street Journal reported, and has made a number of moves at the wholesale tier lately.

New Ste Michelle Wines

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates is introducing three new single-vineyard wines under its Seven Falls Cellars label. Retailing at $40 a bottle, the new entries include a GPS White Blend, Jones Vineyard; GPS Cabernet Sauvignon, Stone Tree Vineyard; and GPS Zinfandel, Jones Vineyard. The new Seven Falls offerings will be in limited on-premise distribution and also will be sold on the brand’s e-commerce site.

New Narragansett

Providence, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beer is adding to its specialty Lovecraft Series with the release of Reanimator Helles Lager. The third installment of the lineup honoring Providence native H.P. Lovecraft, Reanimator is made with the base of Narragansett’s Bock beer that is then dry-hopped with Czech Saaz, Hallertau and Citra hops. It follows other Lovecraft Series brews Honey Ale and Olde Ale. Reanimator Helles Lager (6.5% abv) will be available in six-packs of 16-ounce cans priced between $11.99-$12.49 throughout New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina and Florida.

New Guinness

Guinness is foraying into the red-hot IPA segment with the launch of Guinness Nitro IPA. Debuting nationwide this month at retail and on tap on-premise, the new brew features five hop varieties and a blend of carbon dioxide and nitrogen that “helps to balance out the profusion of hop flavors, while also creating the signature surge and settle made famous by Guinness Draught,” in the words of the company. Guinness Nitro IPA is 5.8% abv and will retail around $9 a six-pack of 11.2-ounce cans. Guinness Draught was down 5% to 9.4 million (2.25-gallon) cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.

Absolut Targets Whiskey Trend With Oak-Rested Vodka

With whiskey riding high in the U.S. market, even vodka brands are looking to get in on the brown spirits boom. Absolut is extending its portfolio with Oak, a new vodka that has been rested on American, Swedish and French oak and is intended to give Absolut a place in classic cocktails where brown spirits have traditionally held sway.

Oak retails at $25 a 750-ml., compared to around $20 for the core brand. Distribution is currently in several test markets, with plans to expand into additional markets in the near future. The company suggests drinking the category-crossing new offering on the rocks, or in cocktails like the “Oak Sour,” “Oak Ginger,” “Oak & Cola” and “Oak Mule.”

Absolut is also introducing a new limited-edition “Electrik” bottle for its flagship original vodka. Rolling out October 1 at $20 a 750-ml., Absolut Electrik is geared toward the nightlife segment, featuring sleek, metallic styling, and will be sold throughout the holiday season.

Dogfish To Release Spirits

Delaware-based Dogfish Head is expanding with the launch of a new spirits line under the Dogfish Head Distilling Co. banner. Debuting in November, the portfolio will include Dogfish Head Analog Vodka (80 proof), Compelling Gin (88 proof) and Whole Leaf Gin (90 proof), with a rum and a whiskey expected to follow. The well-known craft brewer has been distilling spirits on a small scale at its Rehoboth brewpub since 2002, but these new offerings were created at its new Milton-based distillery, which includes two 500-gallon copper stripping stills and a 250-gallon copper vodka column. The Dogfish Head Distilling Co. lineup will be available on- and off-premise throughout Delaware by Thanksgiving, with distribution to other mid-Atlantic markets planned for 2016.

Portland, Maine’s Peak Organic Brewing is rolling out White Nitro, its first widely available Nitro Belgian Wit.
