State (MA) disputes recycling estimate

No On Question 2: Stop Forced Deposits is trying to defeat a ballot question that if passed would expand the bottle deposit law to include water bottles, tea and sports drinks, but not milk or liquor.

After the group launched a television ad this week claiming 90 percent of Massachusetts residents have curbside recycling programs, arguing the bottle-deposit is unnecessary to boost recycling, the environmental groups seeking passage of Question 2 protested, arguing that figure was incorrect.

New Canadian Club

Canadian Club has released an all-rye grain whisky called Canadian Club Chairman’s Select 100% Rye, according to Whisky Advocate. The whisky is aged for seven years at Alberta Distillers, Beam Suntory’s western Canada distillery at Calgary, and then shipped to Walkerville, Ontario, for bottling at 40% abv. The product is priced about $1.50 higher than Canadian Club Premium at retail. Just 70,000 cases will be made available annually, and only in Canada—which may lead to some cross-border shopping, the magazine noted. See the full story in Whisky Advocate.

New Baileys

Diageo’s Baileys liqueur has extended its lineup with the launch of Baileys Chocolate Cherry Irish Cream. Featuring a blend of chocolate and cherry flavors, the female-focused entry is targeted primarily toward the shot occasion. This month, the offshoot’s launch will be supported by Baileys’ second annual “Stylish Shots on the Go” event in New York City, where the brand will host a pop-up “selfie station” and offer sampling of Chocolate Cherry’s signature Cherry Bombshell shot, which is made with Captain Morgan rum, chocolate syrup and a cherry. Baileys Chocolate Cherry is currently available nationwide, priced at around $21 a 750-ml.

Question and answer on “Dry” vs “sweet” Wine

Q: Can a dry red wine have higher sugar content than a sweet wine? Does the amount of residual sugar indicate the alcohol content of a wine?—Pat B., Huntington Beach, Calif.

A: Let’s start by noting that the fermentation process converts the sugar in the grapes to alcohol. It’s not unusual for at least a little bit of sugar to be left at the end of fermentation. Technically a wine is considered “dry” if there are less than 10 grams per liter left, while a “sweet” or dessert wine has more than 30 grams per liter. Stuff in between is considered “off-dry.”

Of course, most people don’t sip a wine and think, “Boy, this tastes like it has 13 or 14 grams per liter of residual sugar!” Our perception of the sugar is based on our own sensitivity to sweetness (some of us like cotton candy more than others) as well as on the interplay of the other factors in a wine: alcohol, acidity, tannins and glycerin. Two wines might have the same exact amount of residual sugar and alcohol, but one’s fruit flavors could taste more jammy and ripe (and therefore sweet) than the other’s.

Since we’ve noted that fermentation converts grape sugars to alcohol, there’s definitely a relationship between a wine’s residual or unconverted sugar and its alcohol level. The more residual sugar, the lower the potential alcohol that wine could have. But it’s not a simple relationship—there are other factors at play, particularly how much sugar the grapes had to begin with. Two wines could have widely different alcohol percentages but the same amount of residual sugar—or vice versa—depending on how ripe the grapes were.—MaryAnn Worobiec

Pabst Acquired By Eastern European Brewer Oasis Beverages For Reported $700 Million

Pabst Brewing Company has been sold by private equity owner Metropoulos & Co. to Oasis Beverages, a Cyprus-headquartered brewer with operations focused in Eastern Europe. The purchase price was undisclosed, but sources told the New York Times that the deal was above $700 million. Metropoulos had acquired Pabst—including the Pabst Blue Ribbon, Lone Star, Rainier, Ballantine IPA, Schlitz, Old Style, Stroh’s and Old Milwaukee beer brands—from Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation for around $250 million in 2010.

Oasis has global volume of 6.1 million hectoliters and claims to have a 12% share of the Moscow beer market. It also operates in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus. The company was founded in 2008 by Eugene Kashper, who began his career with Stroh’s in 1994. Oasis’s acquisition was backed by TSG Consumer Partners, which will retain a minority stake in Pabst as part of the deal.

“We intend to invest meaningfully in the organization, to continue strong marketing support for PBC’s unique brands, and to drive new product innovations and renovations, such as the recent launch of Ballantine IPA,” Kashper said.

Pabst’s core Blue Ribbon brand has grown by more than one-third in the U.S. market since 2010, rising 7% to 35 million (2.25-gallon) cases last year, according to Impact Databank.

New Duckhorn Wine

Napa Valley-based Duckhorn Wine Company has launched the inaugural vintage of its Washington-sourced wine, Canvasback. The 2012 Canvasback Washington State Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from vineyards located in the Red Mountain AVA—such as Klipsun, La Coye, Shaw and Quintessence—and retails at $40. In 2013, Duckhorn purchased an unplanted 20-acre Longwinds Estate Vineyard on Red Mountain, which Canvasback planted this year with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. The company has also hired Washington winegrower Dick Boushey as vineyard manager and local winemaker Brian Rudin. “Current production (on Canvasback) is about 2,000 cases,” Duckhorn president and CEO Alex Ryan recently told SND. “I’d like Canvasback to become big enough to gain national distribution, so that would be about 15,000-25,000 cases in the future.”

Wine Book Review: Reading Between The Wines

September 4, 2014

Book LOGO

Wine Book Review: Reading Between The WinesAuthor: Terry Theise

University of California Press 189 Pages 2010

Book

The following is my “two buck chucks” worth on Terry Theise’s Reading Between The Wines.

Terry Theise is a wine importer and its always mind blowing to read something of someone you follow on social media. He prides himself on selecting what he calls “uncool” wines.  I can relate to Terry as he stated wine found him in 1978 as it did for me when my family bought a liquor store that same year.

“ I found the thing I didn’t know I was seeking. Or it had found me”

Terry references music a lot in the book and his passion for both that and wine shows. He makes a statement how at first he could not account for wine flavors compared to music he could describe. Seeking wines in his travels that he saw pictures of in books. First hand I can say that is also exciting to the wine geek in myself. Going to a tasting/education class looking in a book and having that wine in your glass is a true experience.

What is VERY impressive is how Terry learned wine with no education, no tasting group, and no Internet. He learned wines by meeting old world families and tasting. “Understanding what a “palate” actually is and how to truly know ones own” Not sure if he finds wine certifications valid or not. But I can say after all my education in wine, tasting it is the best education. By tasting you discover more and it leads to looking for answers to many questions you will have, He does make a point that a professional approach to wine is to know as much about it as possible.

Authenticity is highlighted many times by Terry. It makes sense his view on an authentic wine is those that have a sense of family or place. Bottom line is it has a connection. With so many wines choices that is a great stance to take on wine buying! Terry is proud to sell authentic wines and he stresses learning about wine beginning with the old world. Great views on wine being started in the old world countries so taste them. His advice on building a palate is spot on. Recommending tasting one varietal at a time from many regions. Practice by repetition and how it’s all and experience. Wine tasting is compared to a musical instrument. The more you practice the better you become. There is mention that blind tasting skills have no place in a wine career. That may be true but those that can smell, see and taste a wine and give exact details of its type, location etc. are impressive.

There are many great references to wine education. Questions why can’t he know everything about wine but then again no one can. He gets disappointed when he finds the answer to a wine question because his quest to learn has ended. There is always a mystery to wine and to Terry we must accept that. It seams to all come back to the palate. Your palate determines what wine you like and we all vary that way.

Nine Aspects or points of flavor in wine tasting are discussed. Two stand out

balance and complexity. With balance all parts of the wine are equal. It’s not just about fruit, acid etc. but a balance of all components. Complexity is a wine that has many things going on and how they react. There is also mention to 4 aspects of wine that matter the least. Interesting that sweetness is one of them and its stated will only matter if too much or too little.

There is a big discussion on yeast cultured vs. natural. Interesting point that even experts can’t tell the difference on what yeast was used to make the wine. Having attended many wine events I must say that nothing gets me more confused than when yeast is mentioned. Even the geek in me has no interest in what stain of yeast was used. Yeast is a major player and the winemaker does need to know advantages and disadvantages of the types.

Terry covers importance in wine. Starting with connections to family or culture and how they are worth preserving. How the treatment of soil reflects the values of a growers work. True flavor of wine in that it is grown in the correct region and not a grape that has been manipulated. He is satisfied as a wine drinker because he has a connection to the wine. Even if he does not like the wine he knows its made by human beings. People that want to show you something they are proud of. This leads to how he avoids wines that the producer does not own the vines or make wine. They make a style looking for ratings. Again this hits home and I have tried hard to educate and make buying decisions on this point.

Interesting talk about if you want predictability stay clear of wine. There are many factors such as vintage that affect wine every year. He has three facets of wine that are key to understanding. Terry calls them 3 humors or 3 cruxes.

  1. Wine should express origin
  2. Having fun: work with wine not at wine
  3. Ease with the unknowable:
  4. We can live without wine
  5. We don’t drink wine because we are thirsty
  6. Wine is music in the form of water

The wine 100-point rating scale is mentioned. He would rather Writers

deepen people’s love of wine that rate it. But he does think the wine point scales were good for wine. That is hard to disagree with. Give me a wine and say its 90 points I know nothing of its character. Give me that same wine and say it has aromas of dark fruits and flavors of bright cherry will interest me. If I like it my research will begin which will involve looking at reviews.

Globalization of wine is mentioned. Meaning a style of wine made popular by Robert Parker. Meaning wines of ripe fruits, high alcohol, oak and sweetness. Discussions about certain grapes need a place to be known for. How old world wines have place on labels not the grape in it. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay can be grown all over the world. The key is learning the differences of a Napa cab vs. Bordeaux and Chablis from Chard. This all leads to a passion for his Riesling grape. How is its grown in the proper place no winemaking is needed. Terry calls Riesling “foods best friend” for its low alcohol and high acidity. I learned the Scheurebe grape does not change with age as Riesling does. Many grapes are mention and Gruner Veltliners flexibility is highlighted.

As a wine importer Terry buys what he likes and believes in not with a market in mind. Great point made that he is not a good enough sales person to push what he does not believe in. Selections made are based on values for Terry. Those values are old world and family owned estates. Visiting the families and walking in vineyards he knows personally. Again this hits home in my wine buying decisions. With all the wines being made I need to have an understanding who is behind the label. When you meet that person or family it has much more meaning. Like Terry that connection makes me a better salesman.

There is a great view on tasting notes mentioned. When you are new to wine you tend to focus on taking many notes to remember what was tasted. But eventually you will reach a dead end in note taking. Saying something smells like a peach is no help to a person that has never smelled a peach. Terry finds it sad people spend weekends tasting wines and posting notes. He is more in favor of intimate wine knowledge. Though he does take notes on wine he tastes to help his customers. When he is home drinking wine no notes are taken. This is another point I can relate to. After attending many wine tastings hosted by the same educator I noticed he never takes notes. But he can recite wines he tried years ago and how they tasted. He treats wine as an experience and educates that. Where as I need my notes to be true to my customers.

Terry covers many personal stories of his life. The story when he searched for his biological father was very touching. Discovering his dad had a passion for wine AND had some of Terry’s selections were in his cellar was amazing. Bottom line is Terry has a love for wine and families he represents in his portfolio. This is a great wine read and I am looking forward to some day hosting Terry in a wine event. My journey in discovering his “uncool” wines has just begun!

Watertown MA officials consider new liquor licenses

The other part of this story. There is currently a bill in the legislative process that, if passed, will change the course of liquor licenses. If the Senate has it their way, licenses purchased after January 2015 would be non-transferable; when/if the establishment closed their doors, the license would go back to the issuer. If the House has it their way, things will remain as are.

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates’ Columbia Crest brand is crafting its latest Cabernet Sauvignon using a new crowdsourcing method. With the help of an interactive website, the Paterson, Washington state-based winery will ask consumers to weigh in on the 18-month winemaking process, allowing them to decide how to tend, irrigate and harvest the grapes. Additionally, Columbia Crest head winemaker Juan Munoz Oca will help guide the online community and answer questions. Around 1,000 cases of the final Crowdsourced Cabernet 2014 will be available, retailing across the U.S., online and at the Columbia Crest tasting room. For the six months through June, Columbia Crest shipments fell 16%, to 378,000 cases, according to Ste. Michelle.

Direct Wine Shipping Coming To MA

Wine Blog Awards

Updates On MA Wine Direct Shipment

Massachusetts has approved direct-shipping for both in- and out-of-state wineries along with its 2015 budget, which was signed Friday by governor Deval Patrick. As of January 1, 2015, wineries may apply for a direct shipping permit that costs an initial $300 and can be renewed annually for $150. Licensed wineries will then be able to ship 12 nine-liter cases per purchaser per calendar year. Massachusetts has been one of the most important wine-consuming markets to remain a holdout on direct shipping. In terms of per-capita consumption, it ranks third after Washington, D.C. and New Hampshire, at nearly 6 gallons annually, according to Impact Databank. Advocacy group American Wine Consumer Coalition has pointed out that the new law still leaves significant restrictions on direct-shipping, including the barring of foreign-produced wines and shipments directly from retailers.

New branding for Ménage à Trois Midnight

Ménage à Trois Midnight 2012 is a 13.65%abv dark red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot that offers a more voluptuous flavour experience from the core Ménage à Trois Red Blend, a the top selling wine in the US. The California appellations in Midnight are North Coast, Central Coast and Lodi.

Highland Park unveils its Dark Origins

Highland Park has added a new expression called Dark Origins to its core range of single malt Scotch whiskies.

Dark Origins, a 46%abv non-chill filtered single malt, will start to appear on shelves in July and roll out internationally throughout autumn 2014.

It uses twice as many first fill sherry casks than in the classic Highland Park 12 year old resulting in a naturally darker, richer flavour with sherried spice, a chocolate twist and signature sweet smoke of the Orcadian whisky. Highland Park is one of the few distilleries not using distiller’s caramel and so Dark Origins takes its natural colour from the interaction between spirit and cask.

New Narragansett

Providence, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beer has debuted Town Beach Imperial IPA, the fifth installment in its Private Stock series of 22-ounce limited edition offerings. The summer brew features pale and German Pilsner malts with Nugget, Chinook, Northern Brewer and Hallertau hops as a nod to the six German-American founders of the brewery in 1890. The 8.1%-abv IPA carries a label that’s reminiscent of the early 20th century packaging on Narragansett beers. The Private Stock series launched in December 2012 and has included Imperial Russian Stout, Imperial Black Steam, Imperial IPA and Imperial Bohemian Pilsner. Town Beach Imperial IPA retails for $5.99 a 22-ounce bottle and is available throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Constellation Releases 2014 Project Genome Findings After Surveying 7,000 Wine Consumers

After conducting a 100-plus question survey of roughly 7,000 North American wine consumers over the past 18 months, Constellation Brands has revealed its findings in a study called “Project Genome, The Evolution of the Wine Consumer.” The study is a follow-up on a similar initiative Constellation undertook a decade ago that was also called Project Genome.

Constellation has used its survey findings to segment U.S. wine consumers into six classifications: price driven (21% of survey respondents), everyday loyal (20%), overwhelmed (19%), image seeker (18%), engaged newcomer (12%) and enthusiast (10%). “Having this deeper understanding of the wine consumer will allow us to make the best wines for each consumer segment. With this level of insight, we can build greater loyalty for our existing brands, identify opportunities for growth, and introduce new products to attract consumers across all segments,” Chris Fehrnstrom, Constellation’s CMO, wine & spirits division, told Shanken News Daily. “We’re also able to empower retailers and distributors to implement more effective category management processes. Together, we can influence the way we display wines, promote brands and cluster products based on geography, lifestyle and preference.”

According to Diageo, the Old Tom style “bridges the flavor gap between the original, malty Dutch genevers and the more juniper-forward London Dry styles” and is lighter than a genever but more full-bodied and sweeter than a London Dry. Tanqueray’s Old Tom, which is limited to 100,000 bottles globally and will be distributed primarily in top bars, was inspired by a 19th century recipe from brand founder Charles Tanqueray. The pack design is also based on an original Tanqueray Old Tom label dating back to 1921. Each bottle is individually numbered. Tanqueray Old Tom Gin follows the brand’s revival of its Malacca edition in 2013.

First Wine Tasting In USA Using Quini

June 11, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Franklin Liquors and Franklin Wine Club Deliver Immersive Wine Education Experience with Quini

Group first in Massachusetts to adopt the Quini wine tasting standard and application in education

Vancouver, Canada – June 11, 2014 – Quini, an interactive wine tasting, rating and recommendations application and data solutions provider (www.quiniwine.com) today announced an agreement with Franklin Liquors and Franklin Wine Club (www.franklinliquors.com) to integrate Quini into the group’s wine education courses to enhance student engagement and learning with Quini’s unique, interactive five step tasting structure and standard.

Franklin Liquors and Wine Club becomes the first organization in the state of Massachusetts and the United States to incorporate Quini in wine education, with new courses featuring live use of Quini on iPhone, iPad, wireless computers and tablets set to begin later this month. The company offers a comprehensive wine course series at its retail premises in Franklin and will apply Quini across a number of adult wine education programs in the region.

“We’re excited to partner with progressive thinkers such as Franklin Liquors and Franklin Wine Club to introduce meaningful change to wine education in Massachusetts,” said Roger Noujeim, CEO, Quini. “Mark Lenzi’s experience and visionary approach to the wine business are reflected in his company’s early recognition of the Quini wine tasting standard and the importance of interactive technology in wine education.”

“Quini has instantly positioned us for success with today’s increasingly digital consumer,” said Mark Lenzi, CSW, CSS, CWAS and proprietor, Franklin Liquors and Wine Club. “We are proud to be first in Massachusetts to offer interactive wine courses around the Quini application and standard.”

Said Dr. Clinton Lee, DWS, AIWS, FWS, CSW, CSS, Vinoscenti Global CEO and wine program instructor at Simon Fraser University: “Quini introduces an innovative, world class wine tasting system and standard that deepens the learning experience and ensures consistent course delivery and learning. With consumers spending more and more time on their mobile devices and computers, Quini is a natural fit and sets the wine education segment on a new course.”

Quini announced its school program in May. The program incorporates a comprehensive school partner support package that includes educator training, course materials and certification, technical support and school-branded student study materials and certification. The program is designed to augment and support – rather than replace – existing wine school curriculums.

New KJ Line

Jackson Family Wines’ Kendall-Jackson brand has extended its K-J Avant tier with a new red blend and Sauvignon Blanc. Priced at $17 a 750-ml., the 2012 K-J Avant Red Blend is aged in neutral oak barrels. The 2013 K-J Avant Sauvignon Blanc, meanwhile, is cold-fermented in stainless steel and priced at $14. The pair join K-J Avant’s existing Chardonnay offering, which rolled out in 2011 and retails at $17. The K-J Avant lineup, which has done particularly well among younger LDA consumers, has helped boost Kendall-Jackson above the 3-million-case mark in recent years.
