LOIRE PRODUCER RE-RELEASES ‘SCRATCH AND SNIFF’ LABEL

A producer in the Loire Valley has had to change the scent on its scratch and sniff labels after the smell of “terroir” proved unpopular with the American market.

New Sam Adams Mix Pack
Samuel Adams has re-released its limited edition Latitude 48 IPA Deconstructed 12-pack. Rolling out nationwide, the variety pack includes two bottles of Latitude 48 IPA, as well as “deconstructed” versions of the brew, each made with just one of Latitude 48’s five hop varieties. The five offerings include two bottles each of East Kent Goldings IPA, Hallertau Mittelfrueh IPA, Simcoe IPA and Zeus IPA, as well as Mosaic IPA, which makes its debut following the addition of Mosaic hops to Latitude 48’s recipe for the first time last year. The Latitude 48 IPA Deconstructed 12-pack is currently available for a limited time, priced at $15.99-$18.99.
New Jacks Abby Beer
Framingham, Massachusetts-based Jack’s Abby Brewing, LLC is celebrating its third anniversary in business with the release of Framingham Lager. Framingham Lager is an American-style lager brewed wholly from 2-row malts and real hops. It will be available in 12-packs throughout Massachusetts and on draft only in its hometown. The family-owned craft brewery will donate a portion of the beer’s proceeds to the Downtown Framingham Renaissance in an effort to revitalize the city’s downtown. The brewery says it increased production capacity last year from 7,000 barrels to 18,000 barrels.

Purple Wine Co.’s Avalon Winery has renamed and redesigned the packaging for its flagship California AVA-designated Cabernet Sauvignon. Making its debut with its recently-launched 2012 vintage, the wine’s updated look prominently features the new name—CAB—and a bolder logo design. The 2012 Avalon CAB, which is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Syrah, 7% Zinfandel and 4% Merlot, is priced at $12 a bottle and currently available both on- and off-premise nationwide. Based in Graton, California, Purple Wine Co.’s portfolio also includes the Bex, Four Vines, Cryptic and Alto Cinco brands.
Prosecco Is Up
Shipments of Prosecco DOC wines to the U.S. were up 24% to approximately 25 million bottles (2.1m cases) last year, according to the Prosecco DOC Consortium. The U.S. represents 16% of Prosecco DOC shipments worldwide, which rose 18% to 155 million bottles last year. After Prosecco’s reclassification beginning with the 2009 harvest, the Prosecco DOC now includes many growing areas whose wines formerly bore the IGT label.

Providence, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beer is re-releasing Narragansett 1975 “Jaws” retro packaging for the summer months in 12-, 18- and 30-packs of 12-ounce cans. The re-release marks the 29th anniversary of the release of the popular film, in which actor Robert Shaw crushed a can of Narragansett. The brewery has partnered with the R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to support shark conservation efforts in the Atlantic Ocean through sales of the beer. The limited edition cans will be available throughout New England and markets such as New York, Philadelphia, North Carolina, Washington D.C. and Florida.
