Italian Wines’ U.S. Value Rising In 2014, Despite Volume Decline

Italian wine exports to the U.S. rose 5.5% by value, even as volumes dipped 0.9%, in the first eight months of 2014, according to data from the Italian Food & Wine Institute. The U.S. market’s largest imported wine region, Italy exported a total of 1,683,770 hectoliters (18.7 million cases) to the U.S. from January through August, compared to 1,698,320 hectoliters (18.9 million cases) over the same period last year. Value, meanwhile, jumped from $869.7 million to $917.7 million.

Sparkling wine, in particular, helped drive much of Italy’s progress in the U.S., where Italian offerings account for more than 50% of the market’s total sparkling wine category. The Italian sparkling wine segment grew 17.3% by volume to nearly 2.8 million cases, and 21.3% by value to $120.8 million, during the eight-month period.

New Boston Rum

Boston-based Bully Boy Distillers is launching a bottled rum punch called the Hub Punch, an homage to an original recipe dating back to the late 1800s in Boston. To create Hub Punch, Bully Boy steeps its own Boston Rum with orange and lemon peel and raspberry, and then infuses the liquid with botanicals and herbs. It’s bottled at 35% abv and is best served on the rocks, neat or mixed with soda water, ginger ale or lemonade. The suggested retail price is $29 a 750-ml. and the release date is October 22. Bully Boy will be made in limited-run batches on the company’s 750-gallon copper pot still, with distribution limited to Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Glenmorangie has released a new single malt, Taghta, which it says is the world’s first crowdsourced whisky. Created over the past 18 months with input from whisky enthusiasts in more than 30 countries, Taghta—which is Scots Gaelic for “The Chosen One”—will be available globally in a supply of 12,000 bottles, retailing at £70 ($114) apiece. The new malt was developed by—and will be sold through— Glenmorangie’s Cask Masters program, led by Dr. Bill Lumsden, the brand’s director of distilling and whisky creation. Through the Cask Masters program, consumers helped decide in which casks the spirit was matured and assisted with packaging design and imagery associated with the finished malt. An Impact “Hot Prospect,” Glenmorangie has more than doubled its U.S. volume to 108,000 cases over the past three years.

Tito’s Faces Another Lawsuit

Tito’s Handmade Vodka owner Fifth Generation Inc., which is currently being sued in a California court over its claim that the brand is “Handmade,” is now facing a similar lawsuit in Florida. In recent days, plaintiffs Shalinus Pye and Raisha Licht—both consumers who claim to have previously purchased Tito’s—filed a class action suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida in Tallahassee.

The Florida lawsuit alleges that “through unlawful, deceptive and unfair trade practices, and false advertising and marketing, defendants manufactured, marketed, and/or sold their ‘handmade’ vodka to consumers with the false representation that the Vodka was ‘handmade’ when, in actuality, the vodka is made via a highly-mechanized process, which is devoid of human hands.”

Similar claims were made in the California lawsuit. Fifth Generation owner Tito Beveridge said he would vigorously contest that suit. “All of our labels have gone through the approval process of the Department of the Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB),” says Beveridge. “After sending a field agent to Austin to review our processes, the TTB has approved our use of ‘Handmade’ on our label. We think our pot still batch distillation process is one of the key things that differentiates us from a great majority of other vodkas. We disagree with these claims and will defend ourselves against this misguided attack.”

Pabst Acquired By Eastern European Brewer Oasis Beverages For Reported $700 Million

Pabst Brewing Company has been sold by private equity owner Metropoulos & Co. to Oasis Beverages, a Cyprus-headquartered brewer with operations focused in Eastern Europe. The purchase price was undisclosed, but sources told the New York Times that the deal was above $700 million. Metropoulos had acquired Pabst—including the Pabst Blue Ribbon, Lone Star, Rainier, Ballantine IPA, Schlitz, Old Style, Stroh’s and Old Milwaukee beer brands—from Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation for around $250 million in 2010.

Oasis has global volume of 6.1 million hectoliters and claims to have a 12% share of the Moscow beer market. It also operates in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus. The company was founded in 2008 by Eugene Kashper, who began his career with Stroh’s in 1994. Oasis’s acquisition was backed by TSG Consumer Partners, which will retain a minority stake in Pabst as part of the deal.

“We intend to invest meaningfully in the organization, to continue strong marketing support for PBC’s unique brands, and to drive new product innovations and renovations, such as the recent launch of Ballantine IPA,” Kashper said.

Pabst’s core Blue Ribbon brand has grown by more than one-third in the U.S. market since 2010, rising 7% to 35 million (2.25-gallon) cases last year, according to Impact Databank.

Watertown MA officials consider new liquor licenses

The other part of this story. There is currently a bill in the legislative process that, if passed, will change the course of liquor licenses. If the Senate has it their way, licenses purchased after January 2015 would be non-transferable; when/if the establishment closed their doors, the license would go back to the issuer. If the House has it their way, things will remain as are.

New Ste Michelle Cabernet

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates’ Columbia Crest brand is crafting its latest Cabernet Sauvignon using a new crowdsourcing method. With the help of an interactive website, the Paterson, Washington state-based winery will ask consumers to weigh in on the 18-month winemaking process, allowing them to decide how to tend, irrigate and harvest the grapes. Additionally, Columbia Crest head winemaker Juan Munoz Oca will help guide the online community and answer questions. Around 1,000 cases of the final Crowdsourced Cabernet 2014 will be available, retailing across the U.S., online and at the Columbia Crest tasting room. For the six months through June, Columbia Crest shipments fell 16%, to 378,000 cases, according to Ste. Michelle.

Direct Wine Shipping Coming To MA

Wine Blog Awards

Updates On MA Wine Direct Shipment

Massachusetts has approved direct-shipping for both in- and out-of-state wineries along with its 2015 budget, which was signed Friday by governor Deval Patrick. As of January 1, 2015, wineries may apply for a direct shipping permit that costs an initial $300 and can be renewed annually for $150. Licensed wineries will then be able to ship 12 nine-liter cases per purchaser per calendar year. Massachusetts has been one of the most important wine-consuming markets to remain a holdout on direct shipping. In terms of per-capita consumption, it ranks third after Washington, D.C. and New Hampshire, at nearly 6 gallons annually, according to Impact Databank. Advocacy group American Wine Consumer Coalition has pointed out that the new law still leaves significant restrictions on direct-shipping, including the barring of foreign-produced wines and shipments directly from retailers.

Calories in Wine

We always get many questions on calories in wine.

Here is a great guide.

You can also use this formula:

1.6 x percentage x oz in glass

So this means if you have 10% alcohol, and 4oz in your glass, you would do

1.6 x 10 x 4

which is 64 calories.

Diageo Debuts Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve In U.S.

Diageo North America is extending Johnnie Walker with a new upscale offering, Gold Label Reserve. A limited edition whisky based on the Clynelish single malt, Gold Label Reserve will retail at $87 a 750-ml.—positioned between Johnnie Walker Double Black at $42 and the recently unveiled Johnnie Walker Platinum at $110.

Packaged in a reflective gold bottle, Gold Label Reserve is billed as a whisky to be served over ice or in a tall drink with soda water and fruits like grapefruit or lemon. “Gold Label Reserve provides a unique flavor for high-energy celebrations that may not have been traditionally seen as Scotch whisky occasions,” said Brian Radics, Diageo’s director of Scotch whisky, in a statement announcing the launch.

The introduction of Gold Label Reserve and Platinum mark a shift in the Johnnie Walker portfolio in the U.S., where the brand’s Gold Label 18-year-old and Green Label are being phased out, in line with changes that have been taking place across Diageo’s global portfolio over the past year. The world’s top-selling Scotch brand, Johnnie Walker was up 7.5% globally to 19.7 million cases in 2012, according to Impact Databank. In the U.S. it was flat at 1.65 million cases.

From Wine Curmudgeon Blog

Some of the best wine advice ever written is in “;The French Chef Cookbook,” published in 1968. Rose goes with anything, says Child, and she does not have kind words for retailers who offer less than helpful advice. There are also wine and food pairing suggestions, still relevant today, and she explains why there’s nothing wrong with cheap wine for everyday meals. My favorite part, though, is this: “The simplest way to start in on this pleasant hobby is to buy wines, start sampling, discussing, keeping notes, reading about wines, thinking about them, and enjoying them.”; GREAT ADVICE JULIA!

Woodford Reserve Adds Rare Kentucky Malt Whiskies To Master’s Collection

Brown-Forman’s Woodford Reserve Bourbon brand is releasing a pair of limited edition malt whiskies as part of its Master’s Collection series this November. Known as The Double Malt Selections, the pair—said to be the first fully matured whiskies crafted from malt in Kentucky since Prohibition—include a Straight Malt whiskey matured in new barrels and a Classic Malt whiskey aged in used barrels, offering consumers the opportunity to compare the two aging methods. The individually numbered whiskies are both bottled at 90.4-proof, priced at $99.99 a 750-ml., and will be released in major U.S. metro markets and select international locations.

The Double Malt Selections mark the eighth release in Woodford Reserve’s Master’s Collection, following the launch of the brand’s Four Grain, Sonoma-Cutrer Finish, Sweet Mash, Seasoned Oak, Maple Wood Finish, Rare Rye and Four Wood offerings. An Impact “Hot Prospect,” Woodford Reserve has seen its volume upswing accelerate in each of the past two years, improving from a 9% advance in 2010 to an 18% increase in 2011. In 2012, the brand rose 23% to 181,000 cases, according to Impact Databank.

Moët Hennessy’s Cloudy Bay Extends Beyond Marlborough With New Pinot Noir

Upscale New Zealand winery Cloudy Bay, part of the Moët Hennessy USA portfolio, is expanding its product line with a new ultra-premium Pinot Noir, representing its first new wine in more than two decades, and a branching out from its home Marlborough region.

Sourced from Central Otago’s Bannockburn, Bendigo and Lowburn subregions, Cloudy Bay’s new Pinot is named Te Wahi, translating to “our place” in Maori. The new extension is hitting Chicago and Dallas in October, with New York and other key markets to be added next March. Retailing at $75 a bottle, Te Wahi is Cloudy Bay’s first new wine since Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc ($52) in 1991. The line also includes a Sauvignon Blanc ($28), Chardonnay ($32) and Pinot Noir ($39) varietals. Led by its Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay has averaged 25,000-30,000 cases in the U.S. in recent years and has earned 15 scores of 90+ from Wine Spectator.

Cloudy Bay winemaker Tim Heath says Te Wahi is a more masculine expression of Pinot characterized by black fruit flavors, contrasting with the more feminine style of the brand’s Marlborough-sourced offering. “Te Wahi represents a very different and original expression of Pinot for Cloudy Bay,” he says. “It’s driven by place and the new possibilities that are out there for New Zealand Pinot Noir.”

In addition to Te Wahi, Cloudy Bay is also prepping single- and double-bottle “Rare Nature” gift box sets for several varieties for a February 2014 rollout. Designed by New Zealand artist Hayley King, the “Rare Nature” packaging depicts the native flora and fauna of the Marlborough region.
