Treasury Wine Estates Launches New 19 Crimes Beers
Treasury Wine Estates has extended its 19 Crimes brand into the beer category. The releases include a Pilsner, an American IPA, and a Lager and will initially launch in Ohio with more states to come by the end of the year. The beers will be packaged in 6-packs of 12-ounce cans and will retail for $13. Like the 19 Crimes wine portfolio, the beers will feature Australian convicts on their labels and will use the Living Wine Labels augmented reality app to tell their stories. Last year, the 19 Crimes wine lineup surged 47% to 1.56 million cases in the U.S., according to Impact Databank.

Ste Michelle News
Ste. Michelle Wine Estates has partnered with Allrecipes.com to algorithmically pair its wines with recipes on the website. Allrecipes’ technology will classify their recipes to determine which of Ste. Michelle’s wines are best suited to accompany them. When consumers view a certain recipe, the site will display a link to the selected wine pairing to allow them to order the bottle from a store or delivery service. The companies will be able to see users’ locations and proximity to stores and will be able to target advertising and content to encourage further purchases. In a recent interview with SND, Ste. Michelle CEO Jim Mortensen said the multi-year partnership is part of the company’s “emphasis on consumer engagement, particularly in the digital space.”

My favorite wine switched from corks to screwcaps. Will that impact the quality?
No, the wine is not compromised by a screwcap. In fact, it’s quite possible the producer made the switch to screwcaps to better ensure the quality of the wine. Even though screwcaps used to be associated with inexpensive wines, more and more wineries are switching to them, and not just for the affordable wines.
I understand there can be an emotional connection to wines bottled under cork. But cork brings with it the possibility of cork taint, when a wine becomes contaminated by TCA (the chemical compound 2,4,6-trichloroanisole), which mutes wine’s aromas and flavors and can cause it to smell musty or moldy—what’s referred to as a “corked” wine. To be fair, TCA can also come from barrels or other sources of wood, but eliminating corks is one way to battle the problem. Using screwcaps also eliminates the problems of crumbly or otherwise compromised corks, which can lead to oxidized wines.
I’ve been lucky enough to sit through multiple tastings of wines aged under screwcaps, and the results are great. Wines can age under twist-off tops. In fact, the wines can seem to stay fresher longer.
That’s not to say that corks are bad. The cork industry has invested millions of dollars in improving the quality and consistency of the product over the past decade, and in our own official Wine Spectator blind tastings, we have found that incidences of cork taint are generally on the decline.
Change is hard, and a new closure can feel like a strange adjustment, but I recommend thinking of your wine purchases based on the wine inside, not the way the wine is sealed.

Consumer preference or aversion to wines made from native grapes — such as Concord, Niagara and Catawba, which are mostly grown in eastern North America — may depend on early exposure to the fruits’ sweet, ultra “grapey” taste and aroma, according to researchers who conducted sensory tests with wine drinkers in Pennsylvania and California.

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates has launched Prayers of Sinners & Saints, a new pair of wines. A blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Merlot, Prayers of Sinners is aged in new and once-used barrels for 10-12 months prior to bottling. Prayers of Saints, meanwhile, is a 100% Chardonnay offering that includes 7% “Black Chardonnay”—so-called because the juice is oxidized before fermentation, thus reducing bitterness—and is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Both wines will be available starting in March, retailing at $13 a 750-ml.
