New Narraganett
Providence, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beer has unveiled Allie’s Double Chocolate Porter, the latest entry in the brewer’s Hi Neighbor Mash Up local collaboration series. Created in partnership with North Kingstown, Rhode Island-based shop Allie’s Donuts, the Double Chocolate Porter is brewed with chocolate malt, dark crystal malt and cocoa nibs. Narragansett’s distribution footprint currently spans New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington D.C., Maryland, North Carolina, Florida and Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

JD Sinatra Bottle
Brown-Forman has officially launched Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Century, honoring the legendary entertainer’s 100th birthday. Only 100 barrels of the 100-proof whiskey are being released, packaged in individually numbered 1-liter bottles that come enclosed in a luxury gift box along with a selection of previously unreleased Frank Sinatra tracks. The set retails at around $500. This is the second Sinatra commemorative offering from Jack Daniel’s, which introduced a 90-proof Sinatra Select whiskey in 2013.

New Guinness
Guinness is foraying into the red-hot IPA segment with the launch of Guinness Nitro IPA. Debuting nationwide this month at retail and on tap on-premise, the new brew features five hop varieties and a blend of carbon dioxide and nitrogen that “helps to balance out the profusion of hop flavors, while also creating the signature surge and settle made famous by Guinness Draught,” in the words of the company. Guinness Nitro IPA is 5.8% abv and will retail around $9 a six-pack of 11.2-ounce cans. Guinness Draught was down 5% to 9.4 million (2.25-gallon) cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.

New Technologies Trending Now in Wine
New innovation arrives every day. Here are a few of those trends coming upon us quickly:
Absolut Targets Whiskey Trend With Oak-Rested Vodka
With whiskey riding high in the U.S. market, even vodka brands are looking to get in on the brown spirits boom. Absolut is extending its portfolio with Oak, a new vodka that has been rested on American, Swedish and French oak and is intended to give Absolut a place in classic cocktails where brown spirits have traditionally held sway.
Oak retails at $25 a 750-ml., compared to around $20 for the core brand. Distribution is currently in several test markets, with plans to expand into additional markets in the near future. The company suggests drinking the category-crossing new offering on the rocks, or in cocktails like the “Oak Sour,” “Oak Ginger,” “Oak & Cola” and “Oak Mule.”
Absolut is also introducing a new limited-edition “Electrik” bottle for its flagship original vodka. Rolling out October 1 at $20 a 750-ml., Absolut Electrik is geared toward the nightlife segment, featuring sleek, metallic styling, and will be sold throughout the holiday season.
Dogfish To Release Spirits
Delaware-based Dogfish Head is expanding with the launch of a new spirits line under the Dogfish Head Distilling Co. banner. Debuting in November, the portfolio will include Dogfish Head Analog Vodka (80 proof), Compelling Gin (88 proof) and Whole Leaf Gin (90 proof), with a rum and a whiskey expected to follow. The well-known craft brewer has been distilling spirits on a small scale at its Rehoboth brewpub since 2002, but these new offerings were created at its new Milton-based distillery, which includes two 500-gallon copper stripping stills and a 250-gallon copper vodka column. The Dogfish Head Distilling Co. lineup will be available on- and off-premise throughout Delaware by Thanksgiving, with distribution to other mid-Atlantic markets planned for 2016.

A blend of Pinot Noir, Malbec and Petite Sirah, Silk is seen as a lighter, softer, companion to Ménage à Trois Midnight, the highly successful darker red blend introduced last year. Both retail at around $14 a 750-ml. In announcing the launch, Ménage à Trois marketing director Mark Dunlea noted that the red blend category was up 16% in Nielsen channels in the 52 weeks through June 20, and is close to becoming a $1 billion segment in the scan environment. Ménage à Trois rose 12% to 2.5 million cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.

The company said two batches of the hard cider may be showing signs of refermentation in the bottle, which could result in increased carbonization levels. That could cause overflowing upon opening or a bursting bottle under increased pressure.

Brown-Forman is expanding its Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select brand, available at 45% abv and priced around $200, with a more limited label this fall called Sinatra Century (this is the centenary year of the singer’s birth), distilled at 50% abv and priced at $500 a 750-ml. The limited release is already shipping to travel retail and is expected to be on U.S. shelves by October. For the Sinatra series, Jack Daniel’s has employed special barrels with grooves on the staves to draw more whiskey into the wood, explains senior vice president and chief marketing officer John Hayes.
Another product, Jack Daniel’s No. 27 Gold, is currently sold only in travel retail but likely to be released into the U.S. market by year-end, Hayes says. No. 27 Gold is bottled at 80-proof with extra maturation in maple barrels, as well as a second charcoal filtering, resulting in a lighter and sweeter whiskey originally aimed at the Asian market. The price is likely to be around $100.
Looking ahead to next year, Hayes said a new rye product, called Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Rye, will be released in limited quantities at around $50. Two other ryes, the Jack Daniel’s Unaged Rye ($70) and the Jack Daniel’s Rested Rye ($60) are no longer being actively marketed by Brown-Forman.

The main concept of the Quini WineUp is to share a social, fun, wine tasting where we will expand our wine knowledge and experience using Quini. The launch of the new flavor and packaging will be backed by a multi-million dollar media plan, the company says. Bacardi Tangerine is rolling out on- and off-premise, retailing at around $13 a 750ml. bottle.

Bacardi Rolls Out Bonnie Rose White Whiskey
Bacardi Ltd. has unveiled Bonnie Rose, a new Tennessee white corn whiskey brand. Jack Daniel’s Launches First Barrel Proof Whiskey; Woodford Debuts Distillery Series
Brown-Forman has unveiled Barrel Proof, the latest entry in its Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Collection. Aged in charred white American oak, each barrel of Jack Daniel’s Barrel Proof is exposed to a range of temperature variations, resulting in a whiskey that hovers between 125-140 proof. The new Single Barrel offering will be available nationwide starting in August, retailing at around $65 a 750-ml. The newcomer marks the second iteration in Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel lineup, following the launch of Single Barrel Select, a 94-proof single barrel Tennessee whiskey.
In a related development, Brown-Forman is adding a special Distillery Series to its Woodford Reserve Bourbon brand, beginning late this month with the release of two whiskies: Double Double Oaked and Sweet Mash Redux. Both new products will be offered at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky at $50 a 375-ml. Looking forward, Woodford plans to release up to three Distillery Series whiskies annually.

Looking to regain momentum behind Absolut vodka, Pernod Ricard plans to launch an oak-aged vodka under the brand this month, Reuters reports. Absolut Oak seeks to capitalize on the trend toward consumption of oak-aged brown spirits like whisk(e)y. The innovation play comes as Pernod Ricard USA has been trying to emphasize the higher-end Absolut Elyx offshoot in a bid to premiumize. Absolut, still the U.S. market’s top imported vodka brand, just ahead of Svedka, slipped 7% to 4.1 million cases last year, according to Impact Databank, and is down about half a million cases since 2012, amid tough competition from fast-rising Tito’s, among others. Meanwhile, Pernod says it’s increasing focus on Martell Cognac in the U.S., where the upscale brand currently has a relatively small presence.

Diageo is also expanding availability of its Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel whisky into new U.S. markets following an initial limited release in Texas. Featuring Crown Royal’s base Coffey Rye whisky, the 103-proof single barrel liquid is produced at the brand’s Coffey Rye still in Gimli, Manitoba. It marks the first national rollout of a barrel program by Crown Royal, allowing retailers to purchase an entire barrel, with every bottle ($54.99 a 750-ml.) produced from a barrel featuring a personalized medallion naming the retail location.
Grapefruit Emerging As Summer Beer Trend
Summer hasn’t even begun, but it’s beginning to look like grapefruit will be the big flavor trend for the beer category this season.
Several craft brewers have been producing beers featuring grapefruit flavors in recent years, but now at least two national players are behind new grapefruit-influenced brews. MillerCoors’ Leinenkugel Grapefruit Shandy, a summer seasonal, launched nationally in March, and the company says the response has been so positive that an enhanced order window for distributors has been added. The Coors Light Citrus Radler, due this summer, is also expected to have a grapefruit component. “The grapefruit beer market grew triple digits last year,” Ashley Selman, senior director of marketing at MillerCoors’ Tenth & Blake unit, reports. Earlier this year, Boston Beer Co.’s Alchemy & Science subsidiary launched Traveler’s Grapefruit Ale nationally.
Harpoon Brewing’s summer seasonal UFO Big Squeeze, meanwhile, is available in 24 states and Washington, D.C. “Beer drinkers have embraced UFO Big Squeeze more than we had anticipated,” says brand manager Chris Bonacci. Other brews containing grapefruit include Ballast Point’s Grapefruit Sculpin IPA, Abita Grapefruit Harvest IPA, Shiner’s Ruby Redbird and Schofferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen from Germany.

The Wine Group Adds Canned Wines To Flipflop
The Wine Group is launching a new line of wine in cans under its Flipflop brand. Flipflop’s new entries, which are debuting nationwide, are packaged in 250-ml. cans that will retail in four-packs for $12. Including Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Fizzy Sangria and Fizzy Crisp White, the cans contain the equivalent of two 4.2-ounce glasses of wine, and are geared toward summer outdoor occasions. Diageo is officially launching its next play in the high-end Bourbon segment with the unveiling of its Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey brand, created at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. Inspired by the “five keys” symbol found throughout the distillery (and named for the two parts of a skeleton key), Blade and Bow is available in two offerings—Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (91 proof, $49.99) and 22-Year-Old Limited Release Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (92 proof, $149.99). The former is made from some of the oldest stocks to be distilled at Stitzel-Weller before it closed in 1992 and matured using the solera aging method. The 22-Year-Old Bourbon includes whiskies distilled in Louisville and Frankfort, Kentucky, and was most recently aged and bottled at Stitzel-Weller.
Blade and Bow follows Diageo’s launch of fellow upscale Bourbon labels Old Blowhard, Barterhouse and Rhetoric—all part of its Orphan Barrel Whiskey Project—last year.
New Sauvignon Blanc From Sonoma-Cutrer
Brown-Forman’s Sonoma-Cutrer has released its first-ever Sauvignon Blanc. Rolling out as the third entry in Sonoma-Cutrer’s Winemakers Release Series, the new offering is produced with Russian River Valley-sourced fruit and makes its debut with a 2014 vintage. The Sonoma-Cutrer Sauvignon Blanc is currently available in select U.S. markets, priced at around $24.99 a 750-ml. Previous entries in Sonoma-Cutrer’s limited production Winemakers Release Series include Late Harvest Chardonnay, as well as Founders Reserve Legacy, a premium Chardonnay offering.

David Vs. Goliath Update
Did you hear that sound last night??? It was the POP of small business support in Franklin! Not by a resident or a potential customer BUT by the Town Of Franklin council.
Our family knew it was going to be hard to get the Town to not give Big Y a beer/wine license. What we did not know is that OUR town had given up on small businesses LONG before we walked in the meeting.
For the past few months we have joined in the #shopfranklin, small business co-op and downtown partnership groups. It was a good feeling to know people see a need for small business. One meeting with a town representative all that was asked is “what can the town do for you”. What can the town of Franklin do for us?? We have come to realize that answer is nothing UNLESS you donate A LOT of money to the town, help with road infrastructure or give a traffic light. As a small business we cannot support in any other way than our taxes and fees paid every year.

The older generations talk about how the downtown was where all went to shop. There were markets, hardware stores and so much more. The business owners were all local families helping families.
The days are long gone when you had to go to one area of town to buy all you need. We realize the liquor industry is growing and in this case that was NOT the issue. The issue was legal precedent set last year on a 5-4 vote for denial. One store denied based on one store across the street. Big y is in the area a 3 others. Open and shut case BUT no! Not even close 8-1 in favor!
We did not play the competition card or talk of the no courtesy notice to surrounding businesses card. We simply stated FACT that there was precedent in town and in the state of MA.
There are so many reasons for us to be disappointed and we have learned a big lesson of this town we grew up in and love.
Instead we would like to thank all that helped and supported in the one-week time frame we had to present. We received MANY letters from residents and businesses in town. Its unfortunate NO ONE in the town will ever hear or see them. Makes you wonder did the town council??
OUR Town of Franklin has sent the message. Small business has NO support and as individual consumers and businesses we must spread the word.

Constellation Brands is adding a Willamette Valley, Oregon Pinot Noir to the Mark West brand line.
