Located in Southeastern France, Vacqueyras is one of the most recent additions to the Southern Rhône wine region, having received its appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) status in February of 1990 (following the Gigondas AOC in 1971, and preceding the Beaumes-de-Venise AOC in 2005)

WHY WINE SHOULD NEVER BE SERVED ICE-COLD
Chilling it down too far – we’re talking frigid ice-cold level – can actually remove many of the pleasures of drinking that wine instead of the lemonade or water those minors across the park are enjoying.

Crown Royal Debuts First-Ever Rye Whisky
Diageo has added to Crown Royal’s portfolio with the nationwide release of Northern Harvest Rye, its first-ever blended rye whisky. “With rye whiskies serving as integral components of the Crown Royal Deluxe blend for more than 75 years, it was a natural and authentic extension to provide our loyal fans a rye offering,” said Yvonne Briese, vice president of marketing, Diageo North American Whiskey. The 90-proof offering’s suggested retail price is $29.99 a 750-ml. bottle.
Diageo is also expanding availability of its Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel whisky into new U.S. markets following an initial limited release in Texas. Featuring Crown Royal’s base Coffey Rye whisky, the 103-proof single barrel liquid is produced at the brand’s Coffey Rye still in Gimli, Manitoba. It marks the first national rollout of a barrel program by Crown Royal, allowing retailers to purchase an entire barrel, with every bottle ($54.99 a 750-ml.) produced from a barrel featuring a personalized medallion naming the retail location.
Grapefruit Emerging As Summer Beer Trend
Summer hasn’t even begun, but it’s beginning to look like grapefruit will be the big flavor trend for the beer category this season.
Several craft brewers have been producing beers featuring grapefruit flavors in recent years, but now at least two national players are behind new grapefruit-influenced brews. MillerCoors’ Leinenkugel Grapefruit Shandy, a summer seasonal, launched nationally in March, and the company says the response has been so positive that an enhanced order window for distributors has been added. The Coors Light Citrus Radler, due this summer, is also expected to have a grapefruit component. “The grapefruit beer market grew triple digits last year,” Ashley Selman, senior director of marketing at MillerCoors’ Tenth & Blake unit, reports. Earlier this year, Boston Beer Co.’s Alchemy & Science subsidiary launched Traveler’s Grapefruit Ale nationally.
Harpoon Brewing’s summer seasonal UFO Big Squeeze, meanwhile, is available in 24 states and Washington, D.C. “Beer drinkers have embraced UFO Big Squeeze more than we had anticipated,” says brand manager Chris Bonacci. Other brews containing grapefruit include Ballast Point’s Grapefruit Sculpin IPA, Abita Grapefruit Harvest IPA, Shiner’s Ruby Redbird and Schofferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen from Germany.

In defense of the CSW (Certified Specialist of Wine)

Diageo Targets Upscale Bourbon Tier With Blade And Bow Rollout
Diageo is officially launching its next play in the high-end Bourbon segment with the unveiling of its Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey brand, created at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. Inspired by the “five keys” symbol found throughout the distillery (and named for the two parts of a skeleton key), Blade and Bow is available in two offerings—Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (91 proof, $49.99) and 22-Year-Old Limited Release Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (92 proof, $149.99). The former is made from some of the oldest stocks to be distilled at Stitzel-Weller before it closed in 1992 and matured using the solera aging method. The 22-Year-Old Bourbon includes whiskies distilled in Louisville and Frankfort, Kentucky, and was most recently aged and bottled at Stitzel-Weller.
Blade and Bow follows Diageo’s launch of fellow upscale Bourbon labels Old Blowhard, Barterhouse and Rhetoric—all part of its Orphan Barrel Whiskey Project—last year.
New Sauvignon Blanc From Sonoma-Cutrer
Brown-Forman’s Sonoma-Cutrer has released its first-ever Sauvignon Blanc. Rolling out as the third entry in Sonoma-Cutrer’s Winemakers Release Series, the new offering is produced with Russian River Valley-sourced fruit and makes its debut with a 2014 vintage. The Sonoma-Cutrer Sauvignon Blanc is currently available in select U.S. markets, priced at around $24.99 a 750-ml. Previous entries in Sonoma-Cutrer’s limited production Winemakers Release Series include Late Harvest Chardonnay, as well as Founders Reserve Legacy, a premium Chardonnay offering.
What Exactly Is ‘Sustainable’ Wine?
Do grapes and vineyards really need to be pulled into the fight for sustainability? Conscience and all that “green” stuff seems to fly in the face of the luxurious joy proffered by a spectacular bottle of chardonnay.

Are Wine Drinkers More Responsible?
Based on statistics pulled from various, moderately reputable sources including the US Census Bureau, TTB (Tobacco Tax Bureau), NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism), and Gallup, and it appears that, on average, wine drinkers drink less than beer drinkers.
Sugar in Wine, The Great Misunderstanding
Sweetness is a perception. Bitterness, like the caffeine in colas, or tannins in wine, will reduce the perception of sugar. So does acidity. Hence the delightful phosphoric acid in your Coke, and the importance of natural acidity in wine.
