Constellation Brands is rolling out its Corona Refresca flavored malt beverage label nationally. The 4.5% abv range includes Passionfruit Lime, Guava Lime, and Coconut Lime flavors, which each have 199 calories a 12-ounce serving. Passionfruit Lime and Guava Lime are available in 6-packs of cans retailing at $10, while a 12-pack featuring all three flavors will retail at $17. The national launch is being backed by national TV spots, digital, out-of-home, and social media initiatives. Last year, the Refresca line reached 59,000 cases, according to Impact Databank. Corona continues to drive growth within Constellation’s beer business, with the brand family’s total volume crossing 150 million (2.25-gallon) cases in the company’s fiscal year through February.

E.&J. Gallo Winery has launched High Noon, a new hard seltzer brand made with vodka and fruit juice. The 4.5% abv seltzers are available in watermelon, black cherry, grapefruit, and pineapple flavors and all contain 100 calories per 12-ounce can. To support the brand, Gallo has invested in TV, out-of-home, and digital activations. The gluten-free drinks are currently distributed in 32 states across the U.S. for $2.50 for a single can and $10 for a 4-pack of 12-ounce cans.

What does it mean if a wine has a “bolt of iron”?
Sometimes wines have a metallic note to them. It’s neither a positive nor negative attribute (unless you don’t care for that type of flavor).
How did the taster come to the conclusion it reminded them of iron and not another type of metal? We don’t typically go around sucking on pieces of iron. But if you’ve ever tasted blood, blood tastes like iron. Other irony things you may have come across include raw steak, the smell of a butcher shop, or water that comes from old iron pipes. Sometimes athletes can have a metallic, bloody taste in their mouth after a workout, and some vitamins and medicines leave a similar aftertaste. A related descriptor is “sanguine,” which is a nice way to say “bloody.” I’ve also seen wines described as “steely” and “tinny” (“tinny” usually carries a negative connotation). Metallic notes sometimes overlap with minerallity.
As far as the “bolt” in this descriptor, I don’t think the taster was referring to “a metal fastener made of iron.” Rather, they meant it as a metaphorical flash of lightning of this iron flavor. When tasting a wine, sometimes elements crescendo, or fade away, creep up or sing in harmony with other elements. Here I’m imagining that iron note was “striking. “

New Dunkins Beer
Boston-based Harpoon Brewery has partnered with Dunkin’ Donuts to bring a coffee-influenced beer to market. Following last October’s collaborative porter, Dunkin’ and Harpoon are rolling out Summer Coffee Pale Ale in select locations across the Eastern U.S. The 5% abv ale is brewed with Dunkin’s cold brew coffee and, according to the brewery, combines a light roastiness with hop-derived fruit flavors. Harpoon Brewery is the 18th-largest craft brewer in the U.S., according to the Brewers Association.

New Sparkling Drink
MillerCoors is launching Cape Line, a collection of three canned sparkling cocktails. Can I ferment table grapes into wine? How?
First, it’s important to note that table grapes and wine grapes are not bred or grown for the same purposes. Table grapes are sturdier, bigger and crunchier, with thinner skins and often without seeds. Wine grapes are more fragile, with thicker skins, bigger seeds and more juice. Most important, wine grapes have more sugar than table grapes.
Sugar is the fuel for fermentation, the process by which yeast consumes sugar and converts it to alcohol and carbon dioxide. If you crushed a bunch of table grapes, I doubt that a fermentation would spontaneously commence; you would probably need to add sugar, as well as yeast. Even then, the resulting wine wouldn’t have the flavor or structure of wine made from wine grapes.

Dewar’s Unveils The Double Double Series, A New Release Of Ultra-Aged Scotch Whiskies
Dewar’s Scotch whisky has unveiled a new line of bottlings called the Double Double Series. The range includes a 21-year-old ($50 a 375-ml.), a 27-year-old ($100 a 375-ml.), and a 32-year-old ($150 a 375-ml.), the latter marking Dewar’s oldest expression to date.

Dewar’s recently unveiled a new, $15 million ad campaign for the entire franchise, highlighting its maturation process. Angry Orchard Cider, part of the Boston Beer portfolio, is launching an augmented reality (AR) smartphone app called Cider & Food. AR technology typically uses a phone’s camera and screen to superimpose something onto the real world. In this case, looking at a specific Angry Orchard expression will prompt food pairings and recipe suggestions for how best to enjoy the cider—for example, by drinking Angry Orchard Pear to accompany a cheese plate. Users will also be able to take a virtual tour of the brand’s orchard in Walden, New York. Cider & Food is now available as a free download in the Apple Store.
