Why a good wine shop matters

Feedback from recent article by Eric Asimov of the New York Times

If you care about wine and want to drink better and more confidently, the best thing you can do is cultivate a close relationship with a good wine shop.

Good wine shops offer a great assortment of distinctive bottles.

Look at wine descriptions posted under bottles. Are they written by the store’s staff? That’s a positive sign, indicating personal investment and a distinct point of view.

Bargain crates near the door? They often contain less interesting mass-market wines that are rarely good values.

In-store tastings are welcome, but you should never feel obliged to buy.

Good shops understand that the best values are around $15 to $25, so they ought to have a lot of good selections in that range. They should have cheaper wines, too, though without pandering. Pinot noirs for $5 may make sense in the supermarket environment of Trader Joe’s, where the strategy is to sell dull wine cheap, like Two-Buck Chuck, but not in a good wine shop.

The best merchants can teach you about wine, but they understand that a little information is often enough.

Boston-based Harpoon Brewery has unveiled Camp Wannamango, its first new summer seasonal in 16 years. Rolling out this month, Camp Wannamango is a tropical-inspired pale ale brewed with mango. The Story:

The history of winemaking in our family starts in Santa Maria Del Molise, Italy, in the mid -1900’s. Santa Maria is a small farming community, with natural spring from the mountains and rich soil for vineyards. It was there my grandparents began a life-long tradition of making fine wines.

In 1963 my grandfather, Ottavio, moved his family from Italy to Franklin, MA, where he carried on the winemaking tradition from a small hand-dug cellar, in our home.

Today, in that very same home, I have been creating delicious wines using the same traditional methods my grandfather taught me. With my grandfathers knowledge passed down, and the education I received at UC Davis California, the “Harvard” of winemaking, I am proud to bring to you, La Cantina Wine School.

La Cantina Winery was born out of our love of traditional Italian winemaking with friends and family. Since its inception La Cantina Winery has become the premiere location for learning the process of winemaking. From grapes, to barrel, and bottle, you are involved in the educational and fun process of making wine.

The Sugar Shoppe’s Courtney Nappa and Franklin Liquor’s Mark Lenzi show you how during this educational sit-down tasting. A portion of your registration will go towards helping someone in need through the Sugar Shoppe, a local non-profit candy store working with local businesses to help raise money for homeless mothers and children. Gallo, Constellation Claim Nearly Half Of Domestic Wine’s “Hot Brands”

U.S. wine market. Indeed, the two companies comprise more than 35% of the market’s volume, according to Impact Databank.

At more than 18 million nine-liter cases, Gallo’s Barefoot Cellars is easily the largest player on this year’s Hot Brands list. On the back label of Gallo products is a 4-5-digit code.

I was told 2 things: One it’s a color code for the label OR it’s a code for color of the wine. So I wrote Gallo and got this response:

“Due to strict company policy this is considered proprietary information. We hope you understand. ”

SO if you had a color code on your wine no big deal right? To me it’s a chemical code to make wines a certain color. Something to think about.

Wine Spectator Debuts Xvalues, A Free Mobile App For Wine Novices

Wine Spectator has unveiled a new mobile app, Xvalues, intended to welcome newcomers into the world of wine. A convenient, easy-to-use wine app for iPhone and iPad, Xvalues—named for its curated selection of “extreme values”—is available now as a free download on the iTunes App Store.

“Our goal is to make Xvalues the go-to app for wine consumers of varying ages and levels of wine expertise,” said Jessica Shanken, vice president of business development at M. Shanken Communications, which publishes Wine Spectator. “In general, millennials are new to wine. While shopping, there are many aisles with thousands of wines to choose from at all different price points. This app helps them avoid overpaying for a bottle or choosing a wine that isn’t good quality. It’s like buying insurance using Wine Spectator ratings.”

The Xvalues app includes in its library a regularly updated selection of Wine Spectator’s latest highly-rated, widely available bottles. It features five categories of wines: extreme values (all $12 and under); reds (all $20 and under); whites (all $20 and under); sparklers (all $40 and under); and a rotating fifth category that is tailored to upcoming holidays and seasons of the year.

Each Xvalues entry includes the bottle’s name, producer, price, region, year, tasting notes and score on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale. The app also offers helpful tools like photos of wine labels, keywords to sort and simplify the library and a customizable favorites list.

Xvalues joins the popular WineRatings+ in Wine Spectator’s family of mobile apps. WineRatings+, which was updated for iOS9 in December, is consistently among the top-grossing food and drink apps in Apple’s iTunes App Store.

New Narragansett

Narragansett Beer is launching I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale, the fourth offering in its Lovecraft Series. Made with Pilsen, CaraRed and Vienna malts and Warrier and Citrus hops, I Am Providence is 8% abv and will retail for $12-$13 a six-pack of 16-ounce cans. Narragansett’s Lovecraft Series pays tribute to legendary horror author and Providence native H.P. Lovecraft.

New Woodford Reserve

Brown-Forman has introduced a new Woodford Reserve special edition under the brand’s Distillery Series. The new offering, Frosty Four Wood, is a mature Woodford Reserve Bourbon aged in American oak and finished in Maple, Sherry and Port barrels. Woodford’s original Four Wood whiskey, a 2012 Master’s Collection release, was exposed to record-low temperatures during the 2013 Polar Vortex, resulting in flocking, or mineral precipitation, Brown-Forman said. Subsequent filtration from those stocks produced Frosty Four Wood (90.4 proof), a more fruit-forward whiskey with maple hints. Retailing at $50 a 375-ml., Frosty Four Wood is debuting only at the Woodford distillery and with Kentucky retailers.

Delaware’s Dogfish Head has detailed plans to release six new entries and bring back six returning favorites in the coming year. Among the newcomers are Flesh & Blood and Romantic Chemistry (a spring seasonal), both billed as fruit-forward IPAs; Belgian-style Tripel Beer To Drink Music To; herb-infused saison Bière de Provence; Seaquenchale, a hybrid of the Kolsch, Berliner Weisse and Gose styles; and Beer for Breakfast, a winter seasonal brewed with Delaware scrapple. Returning Dogfish entries for 2016 will include Squall IPA, beer-wine hybrid Red & White, 120 Minute IPA, Punkin Ale, Pennsylvania Tuxedo and World Wide Stout. Concurrently, Dogfish Head will also be removing its Sixty-One and Tweason’ale labels from its 2016 year-round lineup.
