New Apothic
E.&J. Gallo is extending its Apothic wine brand with a new red blend called Inferno. A small-batch, limited release, Inferno is aged in charred, white oak whiskey barrels for 60 days. The 15.9% abv offering is rolling out nationally at around $16 a bottle. Apothic, an Impact “Hot Brand,” has added more than 1 million cases to its total since 2012, advancing 14% to 2.5 million cases last year, according to Impact Databank.
New Coppola
Francis Ford Coppola Winery has debuted a limited edition of The Director’s Cut blend in partnership with media and entertainment company Technicolor. The Director’s Cut 2014 Technicolor is a blend of Malbec, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Cabernet and Zinfandel sourced primarily from Dry Creek Valley. The limited edition ($30 a bottle) is launching in select on- and off-premise accounts such as Whole Foods, Rustic, and Café Zoetrope, as well as at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. The new release follows the winery’s August launch of The Director’s Great Movies range as an offshoot of the its Director’s Collection series.
Color Of Wine: Why Tint And Light Affect How We Perceive Flavor
To the layman, wine comes in three colors: Red, white, and for the more fancy of us, rosé. However, as revealed by winemaker David Munksgard in a recent segment on Science Friday, subtle differences in a wine’s tint can affect how our brain perceives its flavor, whether we realize it or not.

55 Oktoberfest/Märzen Beers, Blind-Tasted and Ranked
Since 1950, the traditional celebration of Munich’s Oktoberfest has been kicked off with a cry from the incumbent mayor of the city: “O’zapft is!” Loose translation, from the Austro-Bavarian dialect: “It’s tapped!”

Are Wine Ratings Good for Wine Investment?
Wine ratings were first introduced at the University of California at Davis in 1959 with their 20-Point Scale. Perhaps in a testament to the importance of aligning information to consumer intuition, Parker’s 100 point scale introduced in 1975 was the first real success, even though the useful range appears to be only about twenty points – 80 to 100.

Apps Spell Doom For Wine Critics
There are several wine apps in the marketplace that promise to make things easier to pick wines based on points, yet they are still point driven. Load them on your phone, scan the bottle at point of purchase to get a rating, and who needs to take the time to read what a critic has to say about it.

Barton-Gustier French Wines

Host Chris Ferraro
About B&G
It was in 1725 that Irishman Thomas Barton settled in Bordeaux to start his company, which is today the city’s oldest winehouse still in activity… His grandson Hugh teamed up with Frenchman Daniel Guestier and in 1802 their partnership became official. From the Chartrons area in the center of Bordeaux, barrels and bottles were loaded on board of ships that sailed via the Garonne river to numerous countries, starting with Ireland, England, Holland and the USA to reach over 130 countries at present.

About Chris
Chris Ferraro is the New England Sales Director for Barton & Guestier USA. This is his third year with the brand, which itself dates back to 1725 and was the first company to ship French wine to the United States, imported by none other than Thomas Jefferson, himself. Prior to working in the beverage industry, Chris spent 3 years doing national sales for Banco Santander. Before the excursion into finance, Chris was a manager and hospitality consultant for 8 years with restaurants including Erbaluce, Mistral, Teatro, and Restaurant L. He graduated from Tufts University with a degree in International Relations.

Wine Cynic Tells All
The vast majority of wine sold in our country is complete and utter garbage. Let me clarify how, by vast majority, I mean the bulk of volume, not labels. The huge factory labels sell incredible quantities of schlock, more than offsetting the many great smaller wineries.

From the Chartrons area in the center of Bordeaux, barrels and bottles were loaded on board of ships that sailed via the Garonne river to numerous countries, starting with Ireland, England, Holland and the USA to reach over 130 countries at present.
www.barton-guestier.com

Hess Collection Expands At The High End
Napa-based Hess Family Wine Estates is expanding at the luxury tier with three upscale launches under its Hess Collection umbrella. The wines will include a Napa Valley red blend called Lion Tamer ($40) and a Napa Valley Chardonnay called The Lioness ($60). Hess is also relaunching its prestige wine The Lion with a Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon ($175), marking the first vintage of The Lion since 2008. Both Lion Tamer and The Lion are rolling out now, while The Lioness will debut next April.
Named to reflect the “tannin-taming” quality of the Malbec used in its blend, Lion Tamer is intended to boost Hess’s exposure to the luxury red blend segment. “We believe Lion Tamer brings a new dimension to the Hess Collection,” says Nicole Carter, CMO and director of winemaking at Hess Family Wine Estates, noting that the lion has been the emblem of the Hess family for nine generations. “Hess is one of the larger growers of Malbec in Napa Valley, and the timing is right to highlight the variety and extend further into red blends. The label is a dramatic departure from our traditional Hess look and feel—intentionally. We want to attract new consumers to the brand.” Lion Tamer’s initial vintage, 2014, totaled just under 3,000 cases.
The Lioness is also a departure for Hess, in that it’s a fuller style of Chardonnay from a company known for more aromatic, less oaky expressions of the varietal. For The Lion, meanwhile, Hess partnered with winemaker Celia Welch. The icon wine was taken out of production after 2008 so that Hess could redevelop its Mount Veeder estate vineyards to maximize quality, and is now returning with a 2013 vintage. The winery expects to produce about 500-1,000 cases each of The Lion and The Lioness annually, seeking to create a luxury halo for the Hess Collection.
Wine Box Top Pour
New-patented technology that enables boxed wine to be poured from the top of the bag. A bottom plate inside the box is attached to a spring wire that pushes the wine towards the faucet at the top, and is easily inserted into any ordinary bag-in-box wine during the packaging process; so no need to change your current inner bag and box supplier.

An Italian Night And Claudio

Claudio Andreani (US Brand Ambassador) of Tenute Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari of Tuscany, a great portfolio that includes Nozzole in Chianti Classico, La Fuga in Montalcino, TorCalvano in Montepulciano as well as Campo al Mare in Bolgheri.
“The Folonari family has been making wine since the late eighteenth century. In 1825 the family-owned business took the name “Fratelli Folonari” and adopted the mission of developing, producing and distributing the finest Italian wines throughout the world. In 1912, Italo Folonari – Ambrogio Folonari’s grandfather – and his brother Francesco purchased the Ruffino company in Tuscany that was famous for its Chianti wine in straw-covered flasks. After World War II, major changes in terms of economic development and improving standards of living began taking place in Italy. This also affected the wine industry where the Folonari family and Ambrogio in particular were among the first to promote this trend by producing new, high quality wines that contributed to creating the “new frontier” of the Italian wine. Ambrogio and his father Giovanni own some of the top Tuscan estates in Tuscany’s main appellations such as Nozzole in Chianti Classico, La Fuga in Montalcino, TorCalvano in Montepulciano, Cabreo in Panzano as well as Campo al Mare in Bolgheri.”

Proemio Wines Of Argentina

Join our friend Wendy as she talks and tastes the wines of Proemio from Mendoza Argentina. Compare Malbecs and Cabernet Sauvignon and be amazed!
About Proemio
PROEMIO in old Spanish means Prologue; this is our first page, the kick start of our history. The winery (built in 1930) was adapted to create Premium Quality wines maintaining the original and traditional arquitecture of Old Mendozan wineries.
Proemio Wines are unique due to the personality imposed on them. They assure an important grape concentration with selective extraction of aromas, tannins and poly-phenols. All these processes aim at giving excellent volume, body and structure. Outstanding vineyards, passionate people, experience and friendship come together in the creation of their wines. Finally, aging is carried out in the finest French oak accompanied by a long bottling period.

Traditions matter to young wine buyers
Now more than ever, it’s how you are selling wine to your tables in a restaurant rather than rattling off a series of tasting notes and leaving it at that.
