New Apothic
E.&J. Gallo is extending its Apothic wine brand with a new red blend called Inferno. A small-batch, limited release, Inferno is aged in charred, white oak whiskey barrels for 60 days. The 15.9% abv offering is rolling out nationally at around $16 a bottle. Apothic, an Impact “Hot Brand,” has added more than 1 million cases to its total since 2012, advancing 14% to 2.5 million cases last year, according to Impact Databank.
New Coppola
Francis Ford Coppola Winery has debuted a limited edition of The Director’s Cut blend in partnership with media and entertainment company Technicolor. The Director’s Cut 2014 Technicolor is a blend of Malbec, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Cabernet and Zinfandel sourced primarily from Dry Creek Valley. The limited edition ($30 a bottle) is launching in select on- and off-premise accounts such as Whole Foods, Rustic, and Café Zoetrope, as well as at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. The new release follows the winery’s August launch of The Director’s Great Movies range as an offshoot of the its Director’s Collection series.
Color Of Wine: Why Tint And Light Affect How We Perceive Flavor
To the layman, wine comes in three colors: Red, white, and for the more fancy of us, rosé. However, as revealed by winemaker David Munksgard in a recent segment on Science Friday, subtle differences in a wine’s tint can affect how our brain perceives its flavor, whether we realize it or not.

55 Oktoberfest/Märzen Beers, Blind-Tasted and Ranked
Since 1950, the traditional celebration of Munich’s Oktoberfest has been kicked off with a cry from the incumbent mayor of the city: “O’zapft is!” Loose translation, from the Austro-Bavarian dialect: “It’s tapped!”

Are Wine Ratings Good for Wine Investment?
Wine ratings were first introduced at the University of California at Davis in 1959 with their 20-Point Scale. Perhaps in a testament to the importance of aligning information to consumer intuition, Parker’s 100 point scale introduced in 1975 was the first real success, even though the useful range appears to be only about twenty points – 80 to 100.

Apps Spell Doom For Wine Critics
There are several wine apps in the marketplace that promise to make things easier to pick wines based on points, yet they are still point driven. Load them on your phone, scan the bottle at point of purchase to get a rating, and who needs to take the time to read what a critic has to say about it.

Can you judge a wine by its label?
We’ve all done it. And don’t try and say you haven’t done it, because you have. Probably many times. I’ve done it on hundreds of occasions – bought a wine because I thought the bottle looked cool.

Barton-Gustier French Wines
Host Chris Ferraro
About B&G
It was in 1725 that Irishman Thomas Barton settled in Bordeaux to start his company, which is today the city’s oldest winehouse still in activity… His grandson Hugh teamed up with Frenchman Daniel Guestier and in 1802 their partnership became official. From the Chartrons area in the center of Bordeaux, barrels and bottles were loaded on board of ships that sailed via the Garonne river to numerous countries, starting with Ireland, England, Holland and the USA to reach over 130 countries at present.
About Chris
Chris Ferraro is the New England Sales Director for Barton & Guestier USA. This is his third year with the brand, which itself dates back to 1725 and was the first company to ship French wine to the United States, imported by none other than Thomas Jefferson, himself. Prior to working in the beverage industry, Chris spent 3 years doing national sales for Banco Santander. Before the excursion into finance, Chris was a manager and hospitality consultant for 8 years with restaurants including Erbaluce, Mistral, Teatro, and Restaurant L. He graduated from Tufts University with a degree in International Relations.
