Gallo Dominates Domestic Wine “Hot Brands,”
With U.S. wine consumption estimated to have hit a record high of 326.7 million cases in 2016, Impact’s latest list of wine “Hot Brands” reflects a healthy mix of returning stalwarts and rising stars. On the domestic wine side, the 2016 Hot Brands lineup featured a total of 19 winners.
E.&J. Gallo led the way with seven domestic honorees. Gallo’s Barefoot Cellars ($7-$10 a 750-ml.) held its spot at the top of the domestic roster, selling 18.3 million cases last year to earn its 14th consecutive Hot Brand award. Barefoot was joined by the lightly carbonated Barefoot Refresh offshoot, as well as Gallo portfoliomates Liberty Creek, Apothic, Dark Horse and William Hill.
Gallo also counted Vin Vault, a premium boxed wine, among its domestic winners. Premium boxed wine pioneers Black Box (Constellation) and Bota Box (Delicato Family Vineyards) likewise earned Hot Brand honors, with each selling more than 5 million cases last year. Other domestic award-winners include Deutsch Family’s Josh Cellars and Constellation’s Meiomi, which both surpassed the million-case threshold in 2016. While premium California wines accounted for the vast majority of domestic honorees, Washington’s Ste. Michelle Wine Estates also made a strong showing with its 14 Hands and Columbia Crest brands.

Bourbon Barrel Chardonnay
Robert Mondavi Private Selection, part of the Constellation portfolio, is in innovation mode with the launch of a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chardonnay. Sourced from coastal vineyards in Monterey County, the new offering was aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels for nine months, with a portion of the blend seeing an additional two months in barrel. Retailing at $14 a bottle, the Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chardonnay joins Robert Mondavi Private Selection’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged Cabernet Sauvignon, which debuted last year.

Italian Wines Of Masi Agricola
The history of Masi is the history of a family and its vineyards in the Venetian regions. The name itself derives from “Vaio dei Masi”, the small valley in Valpolicella acquired by the Boscaini family, who are still its owners now, at the end of the XVIII century.
Today, Sandro Boscaini, company President and Managing Director, runs Masi with the help of his daughter Alessandra, in charge of sales and administration; his son Raffaele, Marketing Manager and Co-ordinator of the Masi Technical Group and his brother Bruno, Production and Plant Manager. His brother Mario has his own business, but is still part of Masi and an adviser to the management.

Pass the exam and earn the title French Wine Scholar and FWS post-nominal.
Developed by the Wine Scholar Guild with the support of the French Ministry of Agriculture, this specialization program is designed for advanced students of wine, whether professionals or serious wine hobbyists. This is NOT an introductory wine class; students should have professional wine experience or previous classroom study. Students must be familiar with the concepts of viticulture and vinification, major grape varieties, wine regions, and wine styles from across the globe, and have experience tasting wine in a formal setting.
