What Are Those Holes On Top Or Cork Capsule
A friend told me that preservatives are injected into wine corks through the foil capsule or plastic sleeve, as indicated by the small holes in the seal. This seems unlikely to me. Is it true?
Those tiny holes in the capsule sure cause a lot of confusion! No, they are not a sign of something injected into the bottle, nor are they there to let the cork breathe.
Rather, those tiny perforations act as a vent to allow air to escape when the capsule is being put on the bottle. They allow for a tighter, wrinkle-free fit without any air trapped in the capsule.

ARE FARMHOUSE ALES ACTUALLY MADE ON FARMS?
Not anymore, but they used to be.
Farmhouse ales used to exist out of necessity. For centuries, drinking beer was safer than drinking water. European farmers needed a beverage that was low enough in alcohol so they could still accomplish their daily tasks, while also gaining a bit of sustenance; thus, the farmhouse ale was born. These beers are traditionally made with ingredients found on the farm and can be a bit funky and smell like straw or hay. Farmers would usually brew these beers in the winter and then drink them through the entire growing season up until the point of harvest.
Farmhouse ales were all but dead until the craft beer industry revived them. You’ll most often see them on brewers tap lists around harvest time. It’s unlikely now that your average farmhouse ale was actually made on a farm, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious.

Now, it seems, that salt is making a return into the beer sector as well.
Walking Dead Bourbon
In October, Diageo will release The Walking Dead Kentucky Straight Bourbon, a limited edition celebrating the Robert Kirkman comic book series. The 47% abv whiskey is bottled under the new Spirits of the Apocalypse brand, a partnership between Diageo and Skybound Entertainment, the company behind the Walking Dead comics.
The whiskey’s bottle features numerous references to the series, including the signature of protagonist Rick Grimes, and the symbols of four factions trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. This first release in the Spirits of the Apocalypse series will be available across the U.S. for a limited time for a suggested price of $35 a 750-ml. According to USA Today, only 30,000 cases will be produced.
The move represents another entertainment tie-in for Diageo, which has had success with its Game of Thrones-themed Scotch whiskies. Johnnie Walker White Walker, for example, sold nearly 80,000 cases in the U.S. in only a partial year on the market in 2018, earning Impact “Hot Prospect” honors.

Beam Suntory has launched Knob Creek Quarter Oak, the latest limited time offering for the brand. Knob Creek Quarter Oak is now available across the U.S. for a suggested price of $50 a bottle.
New Guinness
Guinness has added a new stout to its portfolio, straight from the brand’s Open Gate Brewery in Maryland. Organic sparkling wine DO move sparks new Cava rift
Corpinnat and Classic Penedès producers in Catalonia have joined forces in a bid to create the world’s first certified organic sparkling wine Denominación de Origen (DO-PDO).
IS DARK RUM THE SAME THING AS AGED RUM?
Not exactly. An aged rum is always a dark rum, but not all dark rums are aged rums. (Rum is a very confusing spirit because labeling regulations are not as strict as with other spirits.)
Barrel aging is what usually gives brown spirits such as rum or whiskey their warm, toasty colors. In the case of rum, however, distillers can use an array of different aging times — a clear spirit takes on the color of a charred barrel very quickly, even if the flavors take longer to develop — or skip the barrel entirely and use caramel coloring on their spirits. The result would be dark but not aged.
So if you’re in the market for an aged rum, don’t rely on it being dark alone. Look for a numerical age statement printed on the bottle.

Dewar’s Unveils Caribbean Smooth, The First In A Series Of New Cask-Finished Expressions
Dewar’s Scotch whisky is launching Dewar’s Caribbean Smooth, an 8-year-old, double-aged Scotch finished in Caribbean rum casks. The new release, which carries a retail price of $22, combines up to 40 single malt and grain whiskies aged at least eight years and finished in ex-Caribbean rum casks for around six months. The casks were filled at the Dewar’s aging warehouses in Glasgow.
The Dewar’s plan is for Caribbean Smooth to be the first in a series of cask finishes at this entry-level pricing tier. “Cask finishes have hitherto mainly been confined to single malts or above-$30 blends,” says Brian Cox, vice president, Dewar’s Scotch whisky, North America. “With this series, we intend to bring these flavor profiles to a broader market. We see this as significant, as in the longer term it’s important to feed the entry level in order to have a premiumization ladder.”
Caribbean Smooth follows the Dewar’s “double-aging” process, whereby single grain and single malt whiskies, all matured at least eight years, are blended together and returned to oak casks for about six months. In the case of Caribbean Smooth, the blend is then finished in Caribbean rum casks.

Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee, A New Coffee Liqueur Extension
Mast-Jägermeister US today unveils Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee, the company’s latest innovation, which is set to launch nationally in January. The liqueur is made with a base of Jägermeister blended with flavors of Arabica coffee and cacao. It targets the shot occasion, aiming to attract brand loyalists as well as coffee fans. The 33% abv release will retail in the U.S. at around $25 a 750-ml. and $33 a liter. Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee also will be available in the U.K., with select travel retail markets to follow.
“We wanted to recruit a new generation of drinkers, and knew we had to create a liqueur to be enjoyed across numerous occasions,” said Mast-Jägermeister US’s CMO Chris Peddy. Director of innovation Jack Carson called it a natural idea, as Jägermeister and coffee already are a common pairing among fans.
The new release will cap a period of innovation for the brand, with CEO Jeff Popkin pointing to recent releases Mini Meisters, Coolpack, and Manifest as areas of success. The Coolpacks have performed particularly well, especially in national retail accounts. “The take rate has been excellent,” says Popkin. “The 375-ml. business is doing very well.”

Terlato Wines has debuted a new luxury Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington State’s Red Mountain appellation, Klipsun Vineyard Cabernet. The wine is sourced from and named for the region’s Klipsun vineyard, which Terlato purchased in 2016. Only 1,000 6-packs of the inaugural 2016 vintage will be released, with each individually numbered bottle retailing for $150 a 750-ml. In the past, grapes from the Klipsun vineyard have sold to Col Solare and Quilceda Creek, among others.

What is the difference between fortified and unfortified wine?
Fortified wine means any wine, of more than sixteen percent (16%) and no more than twenty-four percent (24%) alcohol by volume, made by fermentation from grapes, fruits, berries, rice, or honey; or by the addition of pure cane, beet, or dextrose sugar; or by the addition of pure brandy from the same type of grape, fruit, berry, rice, or honey that is contained in the base wine and produced in accordance with the regulations of the United States. Unfortified wine means any wine of sixteen percent (16%) or less alcohol by volume, made by fermentation from grapes, fruits, berries, rice, or honey; or by the addition of pure cane, beet, or dextrose sugar; or by the addition of pure brandy from the same type of grape, fruit, berry, rice, or honey that is contained in the base wine and produced in accordance with the regulations of the United States.

Part of Bardstown, Kentucky-based Heaven Hill’s portfolio, Larceny Bourbon is at 46% abv and retails for $25 a 750-ml. Last year, Larceny depleted 103,000 cases in the U.S., up 21%, according to Impact Databank.

The Italian government has approved a request from the Chianti Wine Consortium that will allow wine producers to raise the level of residual sugars from the grapes they use to produce the famous wine in line with European regulations.

Results hint that consumers are less likely to associate price with quality for national brands, and are more likely to buy cheaper products since they all seem the same regardless of price. But the reverse seems to be true for local wine; that is, consumers equate higher price with better quality.

Stoli Group Unveils New Upscale Tequila, Villa One
Stoli Group has partnered with musician and actor Nick Jonas and fashion designer John Varvatos on a new high-end Tequila brand called Villa One. The new entry will debut nationally next month, including 100%-blue agave Silver ($45 a 750-ml.), Reposado ($50), and Añejo ($60) expressions made at Stoli Group’s Fabrica de Tequilas Finos distillery by master distiller Arturo Fuentes. All are at 40% abv.
The Villa One brand was inspired by a trip that Jonas and Varvatos took to Mexico last year. The duo is responsible for Villa One’s bottle design, which includes jewelry-inspired metalwork that’s a signature of the John Varvatos brand, and will promote the label under the tagline “Life as it should be.” Stoli Group acting president and CEO Rudy Costello noted that the ultra-premium Tequila space is continuing its strong growth trend, and is projected to expand by about 8% this year.
“At launch, we’re focusing on high-quality distribution channels and ensuring that the brand is introduced the right way,” Stoli noted in a statement to SND. “We own our own distillery, so we can manage demand along the way, but we do have long-term aspirations to compete with the top five tequilas in the ultra-premium sector.” Villa One joins the existing Cenote Tequila in Stoli Group’s brand stable.
