A Law Used Against Mobsters May Prevent Cannabis From Hurting Wine

Cannabis crops compete with vineyards for water and they tend to increase the value of land. In addition, some believe cannabis crops have the potential to contaminate grape crops; a recent court case took up that issue, but with a twist.

Dewar’s Unveils Caribbean Smooth, The First In A Series Of New Cask-Finished Expressions

Dewar’s Scotch whisky is launching Dewar’s Caribbean Smooth, an 8-year-old, double-aged Scotch finished in Caribbean rum casks. The new release, which carries a retail price of $22, combines up to 40 single malt and grain whiskies aged at least eight years and finished in ex-Caribbean rum casks for around six months. The casks were filled at the Dewar’s aging warehouses in Glasgow.

The Dewar’s plan is for Caribbean Smooth to be the first in a series of cask finishes at this entry-level pricing tier. “Cask finishes have hitherto mainly been confined to single malts or above-$30 blends,” says Brian Cox, vice president, Dewar’s Scotch whisky, North America. “With this series, we intend to bring these flavor profiles to a broader market. We see this as significant, as in the longer term it’s important to feed the entry level in order to have a premiumization ladder.”

Caribbean Smooth follows the Dewar’s “double-aging” process, whereby single grain and single malt whiskies, all matured at least eight years, are blended together and returned to oak casks for about six months. In the case of Caribbean Smooth, the blend is then finished in Caribbean rum casks.

Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee, A New Coffee Liqueur Extension

Mast-Jägermeister US today unveils Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee, the company’s latest innovation, which is set to launch nationally in January. The liqueur is made with a base of Jägermeister blended with flavors of Arabica coffee and cacao. It targets the shot occasion, aiming to attract brand loyalists as well as coffee fans. The 33% abv release will retail in the U.S. at around $25 a 750-ml. and $33 a liter. Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee also will be available in the U.K., with select travel retail markets to follow.

“We wanted to recruit a new generation of drinkers, and knew we had to create a liqueur to be enjoyed across numerous occasions,” said Mast-Jägermeister US’s CMO Chris Peddy. Director of innovation Jack Carson called it a natural idea, as Jägermeister and coffee already are a common pairing among fans.

The new release will cap a period of innovation for the brand, with CEO Jeff Popkin pointing to recent releases Mini Meisters, Coolpack, and Manifest as areas of success. The Coolpacks have performed particularly well, especially in national retail accounts. “The take rate has been excellent,” says Popkin. “The 375-ml. business is doing very well.”

New Wine

Terlato Wines has debuted a new luxury Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington State’s Red Mountain appellation, Klipsun Vineyard Cabernet. The wine is sourced from and named for the region’s Klipsun vineyard, which Terlato purchased in 2016. Only 1,000 6-packs of the inaugural 2016 vintage will be released, with each individually numbered bottle retailing for $150 a 750-ml. In the past, grapes from the Klipsun vineyard have sold to Col Solare and Quilceda Creek, among others.

Why Big Doesn’t Always Mean Bad

Companies don’t grow to that size by selling wine consumers find offensive. And they don’t stay in business by shipping products which get taken right back to the store. The wines are clean. If anything, they are clean to a fault.

What is the difference between fortified and unfortified wine?

Fortified wine means any wine, of more than sixteen percent (16%) and no more than twenty-four percent (24%) alcohol by volume, made by fermentation from grapes, fruits, berries, rice, or honey; or by the addition of pure cane, beet, or dextrose sugar; or by the addition of pure brandy from the same type of grape, fruit, berry, rice, or honey that is contained in the base wine and produced in accordance with the regulations of the United States. Unfortified wine means any wine of sixteen percent (16%) or less alcohol by volume, made by fermentation from grapes, fruits, berries, rice, or honey; or by the addition of pure cane, beet, or dextrose sugar; or by the addition of pure brandy from the same type of grape, fruit, berry, rice, or honey that is contained in the base wine and produced in accordance with the regulations of the United States.

Stoli Group Unveils New Upscale Tequila, Villa One

Stoli Group has partnered with musician and actor Nick Jonas and fashion designer John Varvatos on a new high-end Tequila brand called Villa One. The new entry will debut nationally next month, including 100%-blue agave Silver ($45 a 750-ml.), Reposado ($50), and Añejo ($60) expressions made at Stoli Group’s Fabrica de Tequilas Finos distillery by master distiller Arturo Fuentes. All are at 40% abv.

The Villa One brand was inspired by a trip that Jonas and Varvatos took to Mexico last year. The duo is responsible for Villa One’s bottle design, which includes jewelry-inspired metalwork that’s a signature of the John Varvatos brand, and will promote the label under the tagline “Life as it should be.” Stoli Group acting president and CEO Rudy Costello noted that the ultra-premium Tequila space is continuing its strong growth trend, and is projected to expand by about 8% this year.

“At launch, we’re focusing on high-quality distribution channels and ensuring that the brand is introduced the right way,” Stoli noted in a statement to SND. “We own our own distillery, so we can manage demand along the way, but we do have long-term aspirations to compete with the top five tequilas in the ultra-premium sector.” Villa One joins the existing Cenote Tequila in Stoli Group’s brand stable.
