Direct Wine Shipping Coming To MA

Wine Blog Awards

Updates On MA Wine Direct Shipment

Massachusetts has approved direct-shipping for both in- and out-of-state wineries along with its 2015 budget, which was signed Friday by governor Deval Patrick. As of January 1, 2015, wineries may apply for a direct shipping permit that costs an initial $300 and can be renewed annually for $150. Licensed wineries will then be able to ship 12 nine-liter cases per purchaser per calendar year. Massachusetts has been one of the most important wine-consuming markets to remain a holdout on direct shipping. In terms of per-capita consumption, it ranks third after Washington, D.C. and New Hampshire, at nearly 6 gallons annually, according to Impact Databank. Advocacy group American Wine Consumer Coalition has pointed out that the new law still leaves significant restrictions on direct-shipping, including the barring of foreign-produced wines and shipments directly from retailers.

New branding for Ménage à Trois Midnight

Ménage à Trois Midnight 2012 is a 13.65%abv dark red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot that offers a more voluptuous flavour experience from the core Ménage à Trois Red Blend, a the top selling wine in the US. Highland Park unveils its Dark Origins

Highland Park has added a new expression called Dark Origins to its core range of single malt Scotch whiskies.

Dark Origins, a 46%abv non-chill filtered single malt, will start to appear on shelves in July and roll out internationally throughout autumn 2014.

It uses twice as many first fill sherry casks than in the classic Highland Park 12 year old resulting in a naturally darker, richer flavour with sherried spice, a chocolate twist and signature sweet smoke of the Orcadian whisky. Highland Park is one of the few distilleries not using distiller’s caramel and so Dark Origins takes its natural colour from the interaction between spirit and cask.

Providence, Rhode Island’s Narragansett Beer has debuted Town Beach Imperial IPA, the fifth installment in its Private Stock series of 22-ounce limited edition offerings. The summer brew features pale and German Pilsner malts with Nugget, Chinook, Northern Brewer and Hallertau hops as a nod to the six German-American founders of the brewery in 1890. The 8.1%-abv IPA carries a label that’s reminiscent of the early 20th century packaging on Narragansett beers. The Private Stock series launched in December 2012 and has included Imperial Russian Stout, Imperial Black Steam, Imperial IPA and Imperial Bohemian Pilsner. Town Beach Imperial IPA retails for $5.99 a 22-ounce bottle and is available throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Constellation Releases 2014 Project Genome Findings After Surveying 7,000 Wine Consumers

After conducting a 100-plus question survey of roughly 7,000 North American wine consumers over the past 18 months, Constellation Brands has revealed its findings in a study called “Project Genome, The Evolution of the Wine Consumer.” The study is a follow-up on a similar initiative Constellation undertook a decade ago that was also called Project Genome.

Constellation has used its survey findings to segment U.S. wine consumers into six classifications: price driven (21% of survey respondents), everyday loyal (20%), overwhelmed (19%), image seeker (18%), engaged newcomer (12%) and enthusiast (10%). “Having this deeper understanding of the wine consumer will allow us to make the best wines for each consumer segment. With this level of insight, we can build greater loyalty for our existing brands, identify opportunities for growth, and introduce new products to attract consumers across all segments,” Chris Fehrnstrom, Constellation’s CMO, wine & spirits division, told Shanken News Daily. “We’re also able to empower retailers and distributors to implement more effective category management processes. Together, we can influence the way we display wines, promote brands and cluster products based on geography, lifestyle and preference.”

Does high price guarantee great wine?

New Gin By Tanqueray

Diageo is adding a limited-production Old Tom Gin to its Tanqueray brand this month, created by master distiller Tom Nichol. According to Diageo, the Old Tom style “bridges the flavor gap between the original, malty Dutch genevers and the more juniper-forward London Dry styles” and is lighter than a genever but more full-bodied and sweeter than a London Dry. Tanqueray’s Old Tom, which is limited to 100,000 bottles globally and will be distributed primarily in top bars, was inspired by a 19th century recipe from brand founder Charles Tanqueray. The pack design is also based on an original Tanqueray Old Tom label dating back to 1921. Each bottle is individually numbered. Tanqueray Old Tom Gin follows the brand’s revival of its Malacca edition in 2013.

Jackson Family Wines’ Kendall-Jackson brand has extended its K-J Avant tier with a new red blend and Sauvignon Blanc. Priced at $17 a 750-ml., the 2012 K-J Avant Red Blend is aged in neutral oak barrels. The 2013 K-J Avant Sauvignon Blanc, meanwhile, is cold-fermented in stainless steel and priced at $14. The pair join K-J Avant’s existing Chardonnay offering, which rolled out in 2011 and retails at $17. The K-J Avant lineup, which has done particularly well among younger LDA consumers, has helped boost Kendall-Jackson above the 3-million-case mark in recent years.

The 7 Best Cities for Beer

That’s right Boston is on list!!

http://blog.oyster.com/the-7-best-cities-for-beer-45625/

Many faces of Chardonnay

Chardonnay Types As Explained By Great Northwest Wine Blob:

Here are some basics:

Barrel fermentation: The grapes were crushed and the juice was put into oak barrels (or tanks with pieces of oak inserted) then fermented. Depending on how much new oak was used determines how oaky the wine is. It is safe to say that if a Chardonnay is fermented in oak, it will be oakier and richer.

Malolactic (ML) fermentation: The wine goes through a secondary fermentation that converts tart malic acids to softer, more elegant lactic acids. Nearly all red wines are put through ML.

Sur lie aging: The lees – leftover yeast and other sediment – is left in the barrel with the aging wine. Often, the barrel is stirred, which mixes up the lees. This tends to create a richer mouth feel to the wine.

Stainless steel: This means the wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel and no oak was used. It is quite possible that part or all of the wine still went through ML and lees aging occurred.

These days, winemakers are experimenting with any and all of these techniques. Indeed, you can enjoy a Chardonnay that is partially barrel fermented (new and used oak), partially put through ML and partially lees aged.

If the wine you’re looking at has a back label, look for words such as “rich” or “bright” to determine which direction the winemaker took.

Playtime Wines Red Blend is a Lake County-sourced combination of Zinfandel with small amounts of Grenache, Petit Verdot and Barbera and retails for $12.99 a bottle. Playtime, whose label art is a throwback to the era when posters of pin-up stars adorned various World War II aircraft, is available now in major retail markets at grocery and liquor stores. The company says Playtime “Blonde” Chardonnay and Playtime “Strawberry Blonde” dry rosé wines will soon follow the red blend.
