Boston Beer To Develop Cannabis Drinks, Eyeing Future U.S. Opportunity
The Boston Beer Company announced this morning that it’s establishing a new research and innovation hub in Canada that will focus on non-alcoholic cannabis beverages. The company has hired industry veteran Paul Weaver to lead the Canadian subsidiary business, where he will focus on developing and piloting cannabis drinks in advance of federal legalization in the U.S.
The development comes nearly two years after CEO David Burwick told CNBC the company was looking at cannabis drinks. “We’re not going to be the first one in, but we’re going to study and learn once the hard seltzer category develops,” he said at the time.
“Innovation is core to what we do, beginning with craft beer, then hard cider, hard iced tea, and now Truly Hard Seltzer,” Burwick said of today’s news. “We believe non-alcoholic cannabis beverages could represent a new frontier of innovation and want to be ready for future opportunities in the U.S.”

Quini VIP Rewards Loyalty Program
EARN MONEY FOR YOUR WINE REVIEWS
Hello, We loved having you and your guests at our past wine tastings. We are now testing a new program that pays you money to drink and review wines using Quini! Let’s see how many people would like to be part. How it works: For every new wine review that you add to Quini for wines that you buy for your household or drink in restaurants or wherever, outside of a Quini-led event, we give you two points, each worth one USD dollar. Once you reach 50 dollars, we send you a $50 dollar Amazon or Visa gift card. We will test this for three months (ends July 29, 2021) for this group of wine lovers who come in to the beta program. If you do not hit $50, that’s okay, you’ll still get a gift card for whatever dollars you earned, provided you are at $20 or higher in collected points. To join: Please add yourself to this form: https://forms.gle/dqufcCeQKimrv6NT7
To redeem points: – Make sure that all your wine reviews being claimed have been completed in full – Check that your Quini user profile (click the head shaped avatar in the top right after you are logged in to your Quini account) is completed and up to date – Check how many wine reviews you add in the MY TASTINGS section of your Quini account, starting from the day you sign up to the program – Send an email to info@quiniwine.com with the subject line $50 Mark Reached (or whatever dollar amount you would have reached in the three months) – You may redeem multiple times during the test period Looking forward to rewarding you for being an important and loyal Quini member, adding real, honest feedback to the community. Hint: Our algorithm and process can detect fake reviews. All those will be disqualified. Cheers, Roger

TIPS TO DEVELOP YOUR PALATE!
7️⃣Start broad. Don’t try to narrow in on something like Star Ruby grapefruit pith right away. Think broad first. Is it earthy or fruity? Jammy or tart fruit? Citrus fruit? Once you’ve nailed down citrus, then start narrowing in. Is it lemon? Lime? Grapefruit? Is it sweeter (like the zest)? Sharp (like the juice)? Or bitter (like the pith)?
6️⃣Use a wine wheel. This will help you start broad and narrow in and will also give you some words and ideas to help your brain make potential associations.
5️⃣Test yourself with real-life objects. Start with your spice cabinet. Get really good at distinguishing the difference between oregano and tarragon, cinnamon and allspice. Do a blind taste test with a bunch of different fruits and fresh herbs and see how quickly you can identify them. (Cut up or smash the fruit and crush the herbs to amplify the aromas.)
4️⃣Compare. Compare. Compare. Try to taste at least two different wines side by side when tasting. As long as they are not CRAZY different (e.g. avoid pairing a big ol’ 15% Napa Cab with a soft and delicate white from the Loire Valley), you will notice a lot in each wine by going back and forth between the two.
Morellino di Scansano, “Tuscany” will be on the label. Green light to modify the specification

2020 Sales
Final retail sales data for 2020 was released recently by the U.S. Commerce Department, and while beer, wine and liquor stores soared 18% to $70.3 billion last year, food service and drinking places—including restaurants and bars—fell 19.5% to $616.7 billion. Alcoholic beverage volumes rose 11.5% in Nielsen channels for the 52 weeks ending December 26, which led to a corresponding 17.6% increase in retail dollars. But even though off-premise gains in 2020 were enough to compensate for volume losses on-premise, Impact Databank estimates that total industry dollars fell last year, for the first time since federal excise taxes were raised significantly in 1991, which resulted in a drop in overall demand.

Ménage à Trois Unveils New Sweet Collection Aimed At Diversifying The Brand
Trinchero Family Estates is launching a new Sweet Collection of wines under the Ménage à Trois brand in a bid to bring new consumers into the prominent California wine label, which has annual U.S. volume of 3 million cases. The Sweet Collection will initially include a Dolce Sweet Red Blend and Moscato Sweet White Blend, rolling out nationally this month at $14 a 750-ml.
Billed as “indulgent, semi-sparkling sweet wines,” the new entries are both at 9.5% abv and are targeting a younger and more diverse demographic than the core Ménage à Trois brand, Trinchero tells SND, noting that the wines feature a sweetness scale on the back label and are recommended to be served slightly chilled. Ménage à Trois’ new Sweet Collection will compete against such well-known labels as Stella Rosa and Roscato in the marketplace.

It Matters Where You Buy Wine
If you’re looking to improve the quality of wine you drink, stop buying wine from *most* grocery stores.
Start buying wine at wine retail focused shops online and offline. You’ll automatically eliminate a lot of the large, bulk distributed wines which are nothing more than sweet berry wine juice.

One habit anyone can change to increase chances for finding healthier wine locally.
Start buying your wine from local retail wine shops and health-focused restaurants.
Stop buying wine from *most* large grocery store chains or food-clubs that sell primarily high-processed and less healthy foods.
My two main reasons are…
Variety:
Retail wine shops offer a wider variety of wines outside of the high-volume options from large wine producers and marketing companies. It’s estimated that 85%-90% of the hundreds of brands you see in large grocery stores are from only 10 large companies. Small or organic or natural producers are limited and it takes a detective to find them!
Restaurants offering organic, vegan, keto, paleo, and other health-driven dishes likely have wines that match their customers’ dietary needs. Many large restaurant chains carry common high-volume brands you find in large grocery stores.
Knowledgeable Staff:
Retail wine shops demand more information from their distributors on the wines they carry and pride themselves on unique selections. Also, someone on staff tends to be a wine aficionado who can answer very specific questions or get you answers.
Restaurants offering organic and fresh local foods invest in training their staff to understand the health impacts of wine and go beyond food pairings.
Want to test this concept? Maybe ask your grocer wine staff about vegan wines or the difference between organic and natural wine. Then, try the same question at a smaller local wine shop. If you are frustrated by someone’s response, maybe the Wine & Wellness Survival Guide can be useful to them too!
