TIPS TO DEVELOP YOUR PALATE!
7️⃣Start broad. Don’t try to narrow in on something like Star Ruby grapefruit pith right away. Think broad first. Is it earthy or fruity? Jammy or tart fruit? Citrus fruit? Once you’ve nailed down citrus, then start narrowing in. Is it lemon? Lime? Grapefruit? Is it sweeter (like the zest)? Sharp (like the juice)? Or bitter (like the pith)?
6️⃣Use a wine wheel. This will help you start broad and narrow in and will also give you some words and ideas to help your brain make potential associations.
5️⃣Test yourself with real-life objects. Start with your spice cabinet. Get really good at distinguishing the difference between oregano and tarragon, cinnamon and allspice. Do a blind taste test with a bunch of different fruits and fresh herbs and see how quickly you can identify them. (Cut up or smash the fruit and crush the herbs to amplify the aromas.)
4️⃣Compare. Compare. Compare. Try to taste at least two different wines side by side when tasting. As long as they are not CRAZY different (e.g. avoid pairing a big ol’ 15% Napa Cab with a soft and delicate white from the Loire Valley), you will notice a lot in each wine by going back and forth between the two.
