A slew of new products for White Claw fans, including the long-awaited release of White Claw Surge. The higher ABV (8 percent) version of the classic seltzer will finally hit shelves in April in Blood Orange and Cranberry flavors.
New Prosecco
E.&J. Gallo-owned La Marca Prosecco is launching a rosé expression this month. Rolling out to select markets at a suggested retail price of $17 a 750-ml., the new entry is a 2019 vintage-dated blend of 89% Glera and 11% Pinot Noir, produced via the Charmat method. It spends a minimum of 60 days undergoing secondary fermentation. A 2020 vintage of La Marca Prosecco Rosé will follow next spring. La Marca is projected to become the largest sparkling wine brand by volume in the U.S. by year-end, according to Impact Databank. Gallo marketing director Joyce Chen told SND, “We know there are a lot of still rosé consumers who are looking to add to their wine repertoire, and as America’s favorite Prosecco, La Marca is the perfect option to offer a sparkling perspective on Rosé that elevates consumer experiences.”

Chilean winery Frontera, part of the Concha y Toro portfolio, is launching a 3-liter boxed format including Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a red blend next month. To promote the launch, Frontera hosted a virtual acoustic concert with Grammy nominee Raquel Sofía on Facebook Live, and showcased Sofía’s music in conjunction with Frontera wines. Earlier this year, Frontera collaborated with music streaming service Spotify on genre-specific playlists that pair with four different styles of Frontera wine. Frontera, which has U.S. volume of approximately 1.7 million cases, according to Impact Databank, saw U.S. sales climb 9% in the three months through September, Concha y Toro recently reported.

James is among the partners launching Lobos 1707, a range of Tequilas and mezcal aimed firmly at the high end of the market. Lobos 1707’s CEO is Combs Enterprises veteran Dia Simms, and the founder and chief creative officer is actor and entrepreneur Diego Osorio. Each of Lobos 1707’s Tequilas—including Joven ($45 a 750-ml.), Reposado ($55), and Extra Anejo ($150) expressions—is finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry barrels. The lineup also includes a 100% Espadin agave mezcal retailing at $55.
The brand is rolling out initially to select retailers and restaurants in New York, Florida, and California, where it will take on Jordan’s Cincoro brand among many others in the exploding ultra-premium Tequila segment. A national launch is slated for early next year. “When I first tried Lobos 1707, I told Diego it was the best Tequila I’ve ever had in my life,” James said. “People are going to fall in love with the story, but when they taste this unbelievable product they are going to want to dive in and be a part of our journey.”

Constellation Adds Napa Valley Cabernet And Carneros Chardonnay To The Prisoner Range
Upscale California wine brand The Prisoner is launching two new wines, a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Carneros Chardonnay. The Cabernet includes small amounts of Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Petite Sirah, and Charbono and retails at $55 a 750-ml. The Chardonnay is positioned at $40, and includes some Roussanne and Gewürztraminer in its blend.
In addition to the 750-ml. format, the new entries will join the flagship Prisoner red blend in a three-bottle gift pack of 375-mls., which will hit the market in time for the holidays. Constellation acquired The Prisoner from Huneeus Vintners in 2016 for $285 million. The brand sells approximately 200,000 cases in the U.S. annually, according to Impact Databank.

Kim Crawford Unveils “Illuminate” Range Of Low-Calorie Wines
Constellation Brands is looking to expand the consumption occasions for its New Zealand-based Kim Crawford wine brand with a new lower-calorie line of wines called Illuminate. The new range initially will include Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé offerings retailing at $18 a 750-ml. The Illuminate wines, which are at 7% abv and have 70 calories a glass, use “spinning cone” technology to reduce the alcohol from a portion of the base wine without impacting its aromas or flavor profile, according to the company.
Kim Crawford Illuminate is getting a soft launch this fall, ahead of a wider rollout next March. Winemaker Anthony Walkenhorst tells SND the new products are geared toward “health and wellness-oriented consumers” and “sessionable” daytime drinking occasions like brunch or back yard parties in which light beer and seltzer have held sway.
According to Impact Databank, Kim Crawford is the sixth-largest imported table wine brand in the U.S., having averaged 15% annual growth over the past decade to reach 1.37 million cases and a retail value of $275 million. With Illuminate, the Kiwi import is looking to fend off the emergent challenge from hard seltzer and raise its profile in the so-called “better for you” drinks category.
