New Johnnie Walker Product

Diageo is expanding the Johnnie Walker range at the high end with the U.S. launch of John Walker & Sons Odyssey, a super-luxury blended Scotch whisky. A mix of three rare, undisclosed single malts, the Odyssey blend was developed by Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge using hand-written notes from Sir Alexander Walker, grandson of the brand’s namesake. The whiskies were married in European oak and the blend is bottled in a crystal-grade glass decanter.

Formerly available only in select Asian and other global markets, Odyssey is now in U.S. national distribution at a suggested retail price of $1,100 a 750-ml. It joins The John Walker, Johnnie Walker XR 21 and King George V Scotch whiskies in the House of Walker portfolio, representing the brand’s rarest blends

New Glenmorangie

;Glenmorangie has introduced the latest release in its upscale Private Edition series, Glenmorangie Companta. Companta, which is Scots Gaelic for “friendship,” is a 46%-abv non-chill filtered Scotch whisky that retails at $99 a bottle. Crafted by Glenmorangie master distiller Bill Lumsden, Companta’s wood profile includes maturation time in Grand Cru casks from Burgundy’s Clos de Tart and in sweet fortified wine casks from Côtes du Rhone. This latest offering marks the Highland distillery’s fifth annual release in its Private Edition Range, with predecessors including Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX, Finealta, Artein and Ealanta.

New Woodchuck Cider

Woodchuck Hard Cider has released the latest entry in its limited edition Cellar Series. Currently rolling out at retail, Woodchuck Cellar Series Chocolate is a small-batch cider aged with crushed cacao beans, resulting in a blend of apple and chocolate flavors. The 6.9%-abv entry will be available nationwide through February, priced at around $4.99 a 22-ounce bottle. Chocolate marks the third expression in Woodchuck’s recently-launched Cellar Series, following the launches of Woodchuck Dry Hop in August and Woodchuck Smoked Apple in October. Woodchuck sells more than 2.5 million (2.25-gallon) cases annually in the U.S. It’s the flagship brand of the Vermont Hard Cider Co., acquired a year ago by Ireland’s C&C for $305 million.

Thanksgiving Food And Wine Pairings

November 22, 2013

Meal

Thanksgiving
Food and Wine Pairings Guide and Suggestions

what to serve

Whites

Champagne Sparkling wine is a great aperitif to sip while you wait for the turkey to finish cooking. It adds a celebratory note to the meal and goes well with starters like soup and salad.

Sauvignon Blanc pairs with everything from butternut-squash soup to green salad to turkey with a dressing made of briny oysters and herbs. Even notoriously tough-to-pair Brussels sprouts will sing with Sauvignon Blanc. Also for contrast and richness of cream sauces and dressings New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs work best.

Pinot Grigio is a good aperitif and goes well with roasted turkey.

Gewurztraminer has a spicy/lychee character that sets it up for cranberry and pumpkin or butternut squash soup flavored with baking spices.

Riesling, with their tropical fruit, citrus, green-apple, pear and mineral notes, work with almost any Thanksgiving dish except cranberry sauce and desserts.

Chardonnay – A big, buttery chardonnay from California or Chile can complement the roasted, smoky flavors of squash, chestnuts and pecan stuffing.

Reds

Syrah and Zinfandel has the spice, dark fruit and berries to bring out the best in cranberry sauces also works well with dark meats.

Pinot Noir is the single best wine to choose for Thanksgiving. It has tangy red fruit of strawberry and cherry, with nice acidity. Pinot Noir will support most things on the Thanksgiving table without overpowering them .

Pinot Perfect for ThanksPort or a dessert wine for very sugary desserts work great, as long as the wine is as sweet or sweeter than the confection. That’s important because a less-sweet wine will taste thin, tart or even bitter.

And Dont Forget The Rose!!!

Rose wines are PERFECT for turkey and all the side dishes! If you feel that rose wines are to casual then drink it with leftovers.Rose is Dry not to sweet and VERY refreshing.

Diageo Debuts Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve In U.S.

Diageo North America is extending Johnnie Walker with a new upscale offering, Gold Label Reserve. A limited edition whisky based on the Clynelish single malt, Gold Label Reserve will retail at $87 a 750-ml.—positioned between Johnnie Walker Double Black at $42 and the recently unveiled Johnnie Walker Platinum at $110.

Packaged in a reflective gold bottle, Gold Label Reserve is billed as a whisky to be served over ice or in a tall drink with soda water and fruits like grapefruit or lemon. “Gold Label Reserve provides a unique flavor for high-energy celebrations that may not have been traditionally seen as Scotch whisky occasions,” said Brian Radics, Diageo’s director of Scotch whisky, in a statement announcing the launch.

The introduction of Gold Label Reserve and Platinum mark a shift in the Johnnie Walker portfolio in the U.S., where the brand’s Gold Label 18-year-old and Green Label are being phased out, in line with changes that have been taking place across Diageo’s global portfolio over the past year. The world’s top-selling Scotch brand, Johnnie Walker was up 7.5% globally to 19.7 million cases in 2012, according to Impact Databank. In the U.S. it was flat at 1.65 million cases.

Some of the best wine advice ever written is in “;The French Chef Cookbook,” published in 1968. Rose goes with anything, says Child, and she does not have kind words for retailers who offer less than helpful advice. There are also wine and food pairing suggestions, still relevant today, and she explains why there’s nothing wrong with cheap wine for everyday meals. My favorite part, though, is this: “The simplest way to start in on this pleasant hobby is to buy wines, start sampling, discussing, keeping notes, reading about wines, thinking about them, and enjoying them.”; GREAT ADVICE JULIA!

Wine Of The Day: Johan 2009 Pinot Noir

October 9, 2013

Johan-Vineyards-2009-Estate

Johan 2009 Estate Pinot Noir

100% Pinot Noir

Grown, Produced And Hand-Picked

AVA: Willamette Valley, Oregon.

Terrior: Van Duzer Corridor. Soils are marine sedimentary, primarily Helvetia and Santiam.

Vineyard Elevation: 180 to 380 feet.

Farming Practices: Organic and Biodynamic®

“This Pinot noir was made from the winemakers’ selection of estate grown fruit. The grapes were fermented (both primary and malolactic) using exclusively native yeast, with approximately 42% whole-cluster. The wine was aged for 11 months in 100% French oak barrels; 32% were new. In line with the goals of Johan Vineyards, this Pinot Noir is made in a classic style, with a focus on balance, complexity and elegance. It clearly represents the character.”

ONLY 1033 Cases Made!

Geeky Fact: pH: 3.86=SMOOTH

Reviews:

Johan Vineyards ’09 Estate Pinot Noir displays vivacious aromas of bright red fruit – raspberries and cherries, with a hint of earth and spice and a little white pepper on the finish. I loved the silky, creamy mouthfeel. Lush, round and really well balanced, this is a fine example of an elegant Pinot Noir. We all absolutely loved it.

winejulia.com 3-13

Ruby color with a charcoal cast. Aromas of raspberry, pressed flowers, fruit cocktail, and earth with a supple fruity-yet-dry medium body a juicy, sour cherry, tomato, and praline accented finish. Very balanced and table friendly.

WORLD WINE CHAMPIONSHIPS AWARD: Silver Medal

RATING: 89 points (Highly Recommended)

The cooling influence of the Van Duzer corridor during a hot summer and Daniel Rinke’s deft winemaking with the estate site in Rickreall, Ore., shows in this superbly balanced Pinot Noir. Lovely floral aromas of violet, lavender and lilac include raspberry and Montmorency cherry. The drink carries more of the cherry and raspberry along with strawberry jam and fresh cranberry. Its low alcohol profile makes this delicious with pheasant or pork.

Rating: Outstanding

Woodford Reserve Adds Rare Kentucky Malt Whiskies To Master’s Collection

Brown-Forman’s Woodford Reserve Bourbon brand is releasing a pair of limited edition malt whiskies as part of its Master’s Collection series this November. Known as The Double Malt Selections, the pair—said to be the first fully matured whiskies crafted from malt in Kentucky since Prohibition—include a Straight Malt whiskey matured in new barrels and a Classic Malt whiskey aged in used barrels, offering consumers the opportunity to compare the two aging methods. The individually numbered whiskies are both bottled at 90.4-proof, priced at $99.99 a 750-ml., and will be released in major U.S. metro markets and select international locations.

The Double Malt Selections mark the eighth release in Woodford Reserve’s Master’s Collection, following the launch of the brand’s Four Grain, Sonoma-Cutrer Finish, Sweet Mash, Seasoned Oak, Maple Wood Finish, Rare Rye and Four Wood offerings. An Impact “Hot Prospect,” Woodford Reserve has seen its volume upswing accelerate in each of the past two years, improving from a 9% advance in 2010 to an 18% increase in 2011. In 2012, the brand rose 23% to 181,000 cases, according to Impact Databank.

Moët Hennessy’s Cloudy Bay Extends Beyond Marlborough With New Pinot Noir

Upscale New Zealand winery Cloudy Bay, part of the Moët Hennessy USA portfolio, is expanding its product line with a new ultra-premium Pinot Noir, representing its first new wine in more than two decades, and a branching out from its home Marlborough region.

Sourced from Central Otago’s Bannockburn, Bendigo and Lowburn subregions, Cloudy Bay’s new Pinot is named Te Wahi, translating to “our place” in Maori. The new extension is hitting Chicago and Dallas in October, with New York and other key markets to be added next March. Retailing at $75 a bottle, Te Wahi is Cloudy Bay’s first new wine since Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc ($52) in 1991. The line also includes a Sauvignon Blanc ($28), Chardonnay ($32) and Pinot Noir ($39) varietals. Led by its Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay has averaged 25,000-30,000 cases in the U.S. in recent years and has earned 15 scores of 90+ from Wine Spectator.

Cloudy Bay winemaker Tim Heath says Te Wahi is a more masculine expression of Pinot characterized by black fruit flavors, contrasting with the more feminine style of the brand’s Marlborough-sourced offering. “Te Wahi represents a very different and original expression of Pinot for Cloudy Bay,” he says. “It’s driven by place and the new possibilities that are out there for New Zealand Pinot Noir.”

In addition to Te Wahi, Cloudy Bay is also prepping single- and double-bottle “Rare Nature” gift box sets for several varieties for a February 2014 rollout. Designed by New Zealand artist Hayley King, the “Rare Nature” packaging depicts the native flora and fauna of the Marlborough region.

MA Wine Direct Shipment Update

In Massachusetts wine lovers continue to wait and wait and wait for a chance to purchase wine from out of state sources. This is despite the fact that a bill, HB 294, has been introduced to fix what was determined to be an unconstitutional restriction on free trade in wine in that state. Authored by Rep. Ted Speliotis, the bill would allow out of state wineries to ship wine to MA residents. However, as written, the bill would ban MA consumers from having French, Italian, German, Spanish or any other imported wines shipped into the state due to the bill’s ban on consumers having wine shipped to them from out of state retailers. AWCC supports HB 294, but will seek amendments. CLICK HERE to read AWCC’s action alert on HB 294.

Florida’s Key West To Get First Legal Distillery

Key West, Florida, once a haven for rum smugglers during the Prohibition era,is set to get its first legal distillery with the debut of Chef Distilled, a new craft spirits company. The brainchild of chef and professional kiteboarder Paul Menta, Chef Distilled is located in a 2,500-square-foot former Coca-Cola bottling plant and plans to begin operations early next month. Menta says initial production will be around eight to 10 110-bottle batches a week.

Chef Distilled’s first offering will be a white rum called Legal Rum (around $22), which will initially be available in the South Florida market, handled by Opici Family Distributing. Menta hopes to start shipping to retail by November. “Legal Rum will be our bread and butter, because that’s what the distributor is concerned about and what everyone wants,” says Menta, adding that additional rum entries—including locally sourced flavor infusions and other specialties—will be available onsite at the distillery. Offshoots currently being considered include vanilla crème brûlée and Spanish lime infusions, and Menta is also planning on launching a “raw” rum bottled straight from the still, as well as a barrel-aged offering.

Chef Distilled’s launch follows the recent passage of a new law allowing Florida craft distilleries to sell directly to the public. The legislation, which went into effect this summer, limits sales to two bottles a year per consumer and defines a craft distiller as producing less than 75,000 gallons annually.

Americans Are Starting To Hate Beer

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Aaron Taube

Sep. 19, 2013

Millennials’ changing tastes are loosening beer’s stranglehold on the U.S. alcohol market.

That’s the story from Ad Age’s E.J. Schultz, who reports that the growth in popularity of wine and spirits has caused beer’s share of the total domestic booze market to plummet by more than 7% since 1999.

Now, beer makes up just 48.8% of alcohol sales in the U.S. In other words, for the first time in decades, a majority of Americans are NOT choosing beer as their No.1 booze.

Chief among the victims are the two biggest beer manufacturers, MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch InBev, who are losing market share not only to novelty flavored liquors – like Smirnoff Cinna-Sugar Twist – but also to craft beers that have fragmented the market. “Eight of the top 10 u.s. beer brands lost share at stores in the 52 weeks ended Aug. 11,” Ad Age notes, referring to brands like Budweiser, Bud Light, and Coors Light.

In March, Budweiser’s market testing began questioning “the very nature” of its beer, but Ad Age suggests that the answer to reversing the beer industry’s fortunes could be to produce more creative, less sexist advertising.

Women make up just 20% of the beer drinking market, a problem that could be attributable to campaigns like Miller Lite’s “Man Law” ads that branded beer-drinking as a strictly male pursuit and Coors Light’s “Twins” commercials that proudly objectified women.

As evidenced by Guinness’ fantastic wheelchair basketball ad that launched a few weeks back, the industry is working to produce ads with fewer cheap laughs and scantily clad women. If the industry can present beer-drinking as something a woman might also like to do, it just might be able to turn things around.

Anheuser-Busch is extending its Bud Light Lime range with a new flavor, Cran-Brrr-Rita. The new release will be a winter seasonal, available across the U.S. in November and December in 12-packs of 8-ounce cans and single 25-ounce cans. A-B initially launched Bud Light Lime Lime-A-Rita in spring 2012 and saw it jump out to 7.3 million (2.25-gallon) cases in volume last year, according to Impact Databank estimates. Nearly a year later it followed up with Straw-Ber-Rita. Both innovations have been performing well in the U.S. of late, according to A-B, which reported that the two achieved a combined market share of 1.1% (based on sales to retailers) in the company’s fiscal second quarter ending in June.

New Sweet Potato Pumpkin Spice Vodka

Polish potato vodka brand Spud Vodka has added Spud Sweet Potato Pumpkin Spice to its flavor portfolio. Featuring sweet potato, vanilla and clove notes, the new, gluten-free expression is priced at around $22.99 a 750-ml. Sweet Potato Pumpkin joins the existing Spud lineup, which includes the brand’s core unflavored option, as well as its Red Hot Chili Pepper, Ginger Lemongrass and Heirloom Tomato offerings. Spud vodka was launched nationwide across the U.S. and in Canada in June 2012.

So, what the heck are “wholesale price restrictions?”

These regulations involve restrictions on price practices that would make cheap alcohol readily available.  Cheap alcohol usually increases consumption and problems, particularly among youth.  These include:

.         Restrictions on volume discounts.   Wholesalers are precluded from offering discounts for purchasing in large volume.

.         Uniform pricing.  Wholesalers must offer the same price to all retailers no matter how large or small.

.         Minimum pricing or mark-ups.  States that own part or all of the alcohol business usually mark-up prices by some minimum level.

.         Post and hold.  This is a requirement that wholesalers publish their prices and stick to those prices for a period of time (e.g. 30 days)

.         Credit bans.  This prevents wholesalers from extending credit to some retailers which can be used as a way to manipulate prices.

Not all states have these policies.  For more information visit the Alcohol Policy Information System, www.apis.niaaa.nih.gov.

With Wild Turkey Spiced, Campari America Targets Rum Giants’ Turf

Campari America has extended its Wild Turkey brand with Wild Turkey Spiced, a new flavored Bourbon offering intended to compete against spiced rums. Retailing at $22.99 a 750-ml., Wild Turkey Spiced’s sweet and spicy profile is said to resemble spiced rum and is suggested to be consumed neat or with cola. Campari says the 86-proof entry is positioned as a male-targeted trade-up from spiced rum and is intended to bring rum drinkers into the Bourbon fold. Backed by a new digital campaign, Wild Turkey Spiced will be hitting national distribution this fall.

Wild Turkey Spiced is the latest innovation on a brand that was among the pioneers in the flavored segment with Wild Turkey American Honey, which was introduced back in 2007. In recent weeks, Wild Turkey also extended its line with Forgiven, a limited edition Bourbon and rye whiskey hybrid retailing at $49.99 a 750-ml. Last year, the Wild Turkey brand was up 9.7% to 822,000 nine-liter cases in the U.S. market, according to Impact Databank. American Honey contributed 25% growth to 286,000 cases.

Wine Of The Day: La Massa 2010

Wine Of The Day

Fattoria La Massa 2010

By: Mark C Lenzi CSW

About Fattoria La Massa Vineyards

Fattoria La Massa can be found hidden amongst the Chianti Classico hills of Panzano in the prestigious “Conca d’Oro,” (Golden Basin). It was acquired by its passionate owner, Giampaolo Motta, in 1992. Giampaolo, originally from Naples, came to the area in 1989 to follow his dream of making high quality wines. After working in some of the most famous Chianti Classico estates and spending time in Bordeaux, Giampaolo established La Massa with the technical consultation of famed enologist and friend Carlo Ferrini. Since the end 2008, he relies on the advice of renowned Stéphane Derenoncourt for the vineyards and cellar.

La Massa’s vineyards range in altitude from 315 to 460 meters (1,033 to 1,510 feet) above sea level, occupying an area of about 45 hectares (111 acres), of which 27 are planted with vines. As a result of a 10-year research project dedicated to understanding the distinct terroir of the area, a complete re-structuring of the vineyards has been carried out over the past few years, respecting the particular characteristics of the soil, geography and microclimate.

The estate’s main varieties are the classic Tuscan Sangiovese as well as varieties more typical of Bordeaux, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Giampaolo is passionate about the great wines of Bordeaux and is convinced of the magnificent potential that these varieties have in the terroir of La Massa. In fact, since the 2007 vintage, he has decided to eliminate Sangiovese completely from La Massa’s flagship Giorgio Primo IGT blend, resulting in a wine that more fully represents his personality.

La Massa produces two wines: La Massa IGT (predominantly Sangiovese, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) and the winery’s first wine, Giorgio Primo IGT (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot). Driven by an unremitting pursuit of excellence, Giampaolo’s dedication and enthusiasm continues to be recognized worldwide, receiving accolades for his wines from the most important wine critics and publications.

About The Winemaker

Giampaolo Motta

Giampaolo Motta, born in 1964, changes his career to become a winemaker. He comes from Naples, where his parents run a furrier’s workshop. Yet Giampaolo Motta’s professional life does not lead him to the leather business, but to winemaking. While studying chemistry in France he discovers his love of Bordeaux. Back in Italy he takes on temporary jobs in top vineyards such as Riecine and Castello dei Rampolla. In 1992 he manages to buy an old vineyard directly next to Riecine with borrowed money: the vineyard La Massa which has been documented since the 15th century.

The vines of this property stand mainly in the “conca d’oro“, the „golden shell“ of Panzano, a southern vineyard which gets a lot of warmth and sun due to its conical shape. Motta begins to rebuild the vineyard to a top winery together with the star oenologist, Carlo Ferrini. To do this Motta plants the vines closer together, he plants new clones and experiments with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The very first bottling of the 1993 vintage Motta’s top cuvee “Giorgio Primo” (at the time a Chianti classic, today a Tuscany IGT, half Sangiovese, half Merlot and Cabernet) achieves the sought-after “three glasses” from the Italian wine guide “Gambero rosso”. The praise of the international press has not stopped ever since.
