2004 Col Solare Red

“Aromas of cherry, black cherry and black currant fruits fuse with smooth notes of vanilla, clove, and tobacco. Rich and balanced on the palate, this wine finishes with long, lingering flavors of cocoa, black currant, and vanilla.”

The 2004 growing season started out with a very early, warm and dry spring. Bud break occurred about a week ahead of schedule. Bloom was marked with average temperatures and continued dry weather. By summer the valley was very warm leading into late July and early August, with near record high temperatures. This is a sophisticated blend of cabernet sauvignon (80 percent) with cabernet franc, merlot and petit verdot; it comes from a variety of sources, most notably Chateau Ste Michelle’s Cold Creek vineyard. Classical in its elegance, this wine’s earthen, brown spice supports lean black cherry, kissed by oak. The flavors feel lithe, possessing astonishing length. (Review from 2/1/08)

The 2004 Red Table Wine is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It was aged for 27 months in French (60%) and American (40%) oak, 100% new. Purple-colored, the expressive bouquet reveals pain grille, pencil lead, mineral, black currant, and blackberry. The wine glides across the palate smoothly and the flavors are savory. There is enough tannin to support 4-6 years of evolution but the finish is slightly muted and compressed. The wine’s balance suggests that a few years of cellaring should round it out and it should continue to provide pleasure through 2025.

This new release from the high-profile Ste. Michelle/Antinori Red Mountain project may be the finest Col Solare to date. The blend is 80% Cab Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and a splash each of Cab Franc and Petite Verdot. This is a chewy, muscular wine, dense with plumy fruit, and layered with flavors of the earth, soy and black tea. There is a hint of baked, pruny flavor that is restrained enough to add interest rather than detract.
